Trust as a Child

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
Matthew 6:31,32

Matthew_18-3: And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

My wife and I have been blessed with three children. Each is unique, yet they all have one thing in common. Not one child rises in the morning with a concern of what he or she is going to eat, or if there’s something to wear. They know that Mommy and Daddy will meet their every need. Rather than ask, “Is there any breakfast?” they say, “What’s for breakfast?”

Matthew_21-22: And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

They have a built-in trust that provision has been made for their growling stomachs. This serves as an inspiration to me. If my children trust me to take care of them, why can’t I trust God to take care of me?

Hannah Whitall Smith had a similar enlightenment while visiting someone’s home.

Luke_12-6: Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

I visited once in a wealthy home, where there was a little adopted child upon whom was lavished all the tender love and care that human hearts could bestow. The child ran in and out, free and light-hearted, without a care. I thought what a picture it was of our wonderful position as children in the house of our Heavenly Father. And I said to myself, Nothing would so grieve and wound the loving hearts around her as to see this little child beginning to be worried or anxious about herself in any way.

1-John_5-14: And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us

How much more must the great, loving heart of our God and Father be grieved and wounded at seeing His children taking so much anxious care and thought! And I understood why it was that our Lord had said to us so emphatically, “Take no thought for yourselves.”
