“Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than a house full of sacrifices with strife.” (KJV)
Other translations render it this way:
“Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.” (NIV)
Background
The Book of Proverbs contrasts two kinds of life: one built on God’s wisdom and another driven by foolishness. Proverbs 17:1 teaches that the atmosphere in a home is more valuable than the abundance of its possessions. God is more concerned with peace than prosperity and with relationships than riches.
Phrase-by-Phrase Exposition
1. “Better is a dry morsel…”
A “dry morsel” refers to a simple, modest meal—perhaps just a piece of dry bread without meat or delicacies.
The emphasis is not on poverty but on contentment. The verse reminds us that material abundance is not the ultimate measure of a good life.
Paul echoed this truth:
“Godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)
Many people spend their lives chasing wealth, assuming it guarantees happiness. Solomon says otherwise.
2. “…and quietness therewith”
Quietness refers to peace, harmony, security, and emotional stability.
A peaceful home is one where:
Love is evident.
Respect is mutual.
Forgiveness is practised.
God’s presence is welcomed.
Peace is one of God’s greatest gifts.
Jesus said:
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you…” (John 14:27)
A peaceful atmosphere cannot be bought with money.
3. “…than a house full of sacrifices…”
A “house full of sacrifices” describes abundance.
In Israel, sacrificial animals were eaten during fellowship offerings (Leviticus 7:15–16). Therefore, a house full of sacrifices symbolized celebration, prosperity, and lavish feasting.
Solomon is not condemning wealth.
He is saying that wealth without peace is a poor bargain.
4. “…with strife.”
Strife includes:
Constant quarrelling
Bitterness
Jealousy
Anger
Competition
Suspicion
Division
A luxurious house filled with conflict becomes emotionally exhausting.
Peace is what makes a house a home.
Biblical Illustrations
Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38–42)
Martha’s house was filled with activity and provision, yet she became frustrated and resentful.
Mary chose peace at Jesus’ feet.
The lesson: activity without inner peace leads to frustration.
Abraham and Lot (Genesis 13)
Their wealth increased until strife broke out between their herdsmen.
Abraham valued peace above possessions and willingly allowed Lot first choice of the land.
God later rewarded Abraham abundantly.
The Prodigal Son’s Elder Brother (Luke 15)
The father’s house was wealthy enough to kill the fatted calf.
Yet the elder brother lived with resentment rather than joy.
Prosperity does not automatically produce peace.
Contemporary Applications
1. Build peaceful homes rather than impressive houses.
Many families have beautiful homes but broken relationships.
Children thrive more in homes filled with love than in luxurious houses filled with conflict.
2. Never sacrifice relationships for financial success.
A promotion that destroys your marriage or family life may cost more than it pays.
Success should never come at the expense of peace.
3. Practise contentment.
The pressure to keep up with others often robs people of joy.
Contentment allows gratitude to flourish.
4. Guard your words.
Many homes lose their peace because of careless speech.
Proverbs 15:1 says:
“A soft answer turneth away wrath…”
Peace often begins with disciplined speech.
5. Pursue God’s presence.
Where Christ is honoured, peace has room to grow.
Prayer, forgiveness, humility, and mutual respect preserve unity.
Leadership Application
This principle also applies beyond the family.
An organisation with modest resources but trust, unity, and shared purpose will often outperform a wealthy organisation plagued by internal politics and conflict.
Leaders should cultivate cultures where people feel respected, valued, and safe.
Reflection Questions
Is my home known more for peace or for possessions?
Am I pursuing wealth at the expense of relationships?
What habits am I cultivating that either preserve or destroy peace?
Am I content with God’s provision, or am I constantly comparing myself with others?
Prayer Points
1. Father, let Your peace reign in our home and remove every spirit of strife and division.
2. Lord, teach us the grace of contentment and deliver us from the trap of comparison and greed.
3. Help us to value relationships above material possessions.
4. Set a guard over our mouths so that our words build peace rather than provoke conflict.
5. Let our home be a dwelling place of Your presence, where love, forgiveness, and unity abound.
6. Give us wisdom to pursue success without sacrificing our family, our faith, or our peace.
7. May our lives reflect the truth that true riches are found not merely in abundance, but in the peace that comes from walking with You.

People ask me, “Lawyer, why do you talk about football so much?”
Simple.
I married a man who loves football.
Instead of complaining, I decided to sit down and watch with him.
Before I knew it, I started understanding the game.
Today, football is part of our family language.
The funny thing is that football has taught me lessons I use in marriage and life.
1. Every match has two halves.
If the first half of your marriage, business or life is bad, don’t conclude. The second half may surprise you.
2. A red card reminds me that lack of self-control can send anyone out of the game.
3. An offside teaches me that moving before the right time can cancel a beautiful goal. Timing matters.
4. Penalties remind me that one careless mistake can become very expensive.
5. VAR teaches me not to judge every situation too quickly. Sometimes you need a second look before reaching a conclusion.
6. The captain cannot win alone. A family succeeds when everyone plays their part.
7. The coach cannot enter the pitch to score. Parents can advise, but children must eventually make good decisions themselves.
8. Even the best strikers miss chances. Failure is not the end.
9. A team that keeps passing the ball achieves more than players who want all the glory. Teamwork builds strong families.
10. Injury time has taught me never to give up. Some of life’s biggest miracles happen in the extra minutes.
So, when you see me talking about football, I’m not just discussing goals.
I’m talking about life.
I’m talking about marriage.
I’m talking about family.
I’m talking about lessons hidden inside 90 minutes.
