So what does Scripture tell us about temptation and how to resist it?

1-Corinthians_10-13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it

Matthew_26-41-1: Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak

Mark_14-38: Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak

There is no sin in being tempted, because everyone experiences it. Rather, it is when we give in that it becomes sin.

 
The good news is that temptation can be endured. Not only that, but the believer who resists temptation is happy and will receive a reward. So what does Scripture tell us about temptation and how to resist it?

PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES

1. Where does temptation come from? Generally, temptation comes from Satan, but it takes two to tango. Temptation does nothing unless we give it permission. James 1:14–15 describes the process of temptation: the temptation itself, our attention is stirred, we give it power, we act on it, and eventually the repercussions kick in.

 
2. When does temptation come? The simple answer is that temptation comes all the time, but there are times when it is sure to come. Jesus’ temptation came right after His baptism. Likewise, temptation will come after times of great blessing in our lives.

Temptation also comes when we believe we are strongest. It was after Simon Peter boasted of his devotion to the Lord that he was told he would deny the Lord.

 
3. How does temptation come? In many cases, temptation enters through the doorway of our minds (2 Corinthians 11:3). The mind is where we imagine and fantasize, opening the door for Satan’s enticements. Scripture tells us that we need to have our guard up against attack (2 Corinthians 10:5–6), and that we need to fill our mind with the Word of God and godly thoughts (Philippians 4:8–9).

 
4. Who does temptation come to? Just as children are especially vulnerable to dangers and threats, young believers are easy targets for the devil because they may not be grounded enough in their faith to withstand an attack or temptation. But Satan will also go after the Christian who is making a difference for God’s kingdom. He will attack the active believer in order to distract him or her from working for God.

 
5. Where is the best place to be when temptation comes? Answer: In the will of God (Psalm 1). When we are in the Word daily, seeking His will, and following Scripture, we are less likely to give in to temptation. When we let ourselves wander and stray, that’s when we find ourselves where we’re not supposed to be, doing something we’re not supposed to be doing.

6. What is the primary weapon we should use to resist it? Paul’s description of our spiritual armor only lists one offensive weapon: the Word of God. And that is how we build up our defences against temptation and repel Satan’s attacks—by reading Scripture and memorizing it. If we can remember obscure movie quotes and song lyrics, we can memorize Scripture.

Relevant Reminders

When we memorize Scripture, it helps us respond when Satan comes in with his temptations. Here are some of Satan’s accusations and verses that you can use to respond.

• “You have sinned and God won’t forgive you”: 1 John 1:9 says God is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us, if we will confess our sins.

 
• “God has condemned us for our sins”: Romans 8:1 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

 
• “You will never get up again. You are never going to recover from this. This is the end”:
Philippians 1:6 says God will complete the work He started in you.

 
• “God has abandoned you”: Romans 8:28 says all things work together for good for those who love God.

 
• “Your loved one is gone, and you’ll never see them again”: Jesus said that he who believes in Christ will live, even if he dies (John 11:25). 2 Corinthians 5:8 says that the believer who has died immediately goes into God’s presence.

Applicable Actions

Temptation can be effectively resisted. The formula is simple: memorize Scripture, stay close to God and His people, and stay away from ungodly influences. If you are a Christian and do those things, you can defeat temptation because you will have Christ on your side.
But if you aren’t a Christian, you can do all of those things and even resist some temptation, but you will be fighting alone and you will fall. Why not find forgiveness for your sins in a relationship with God? Then you can start to win the battle against temptation

Gideon, an unlikely choice for a hero. It is time to step out and be a true follower of Jesus Christ.

John_8-12: Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life

Judges 6

 
The Book of Joshua represents an emotional high for the nation of Israel, as God’s people conquered Canaan and took possession of the Promised Land. Conversely, the Book of Judges is a huge let-down, as the Israelites’ reliance on God falters and opposing nations begin to torment them.

 
Even then, God was gracious, sending 13 judges to galvanize Israel and fight back against its many foes. One of them was Gideon, an unlikely choice for a hero. But God used him to make a difference and turn Israel back toward God. Gideon is also a picture of how God can use us to change the world today.

Practical Principles

1. God uses people who are humble. We tend to imagine that God uses the talented, the superstars, and the beautiful people to do His work. But truly, He is looking for ordinary people, ones who see themselves for who they are. That way, God can do the extraordinary through them, just as He did with Gideon. We see who we are, but God sees what we can be.

 
2. God uses people who are faithful in the little things. Before Gideon could take on the Midianites, God asked him to do something smaller—destroy his father’s idol and altar to Baal, build an altar to God, and offer a burnt sacrifice. Some people want to cross the ocean to be a missionary, but God might be calling you to simply cross the street and share with a neighbor. He might be calling you to serve at church in the children’s ministry or parking lot ministry. Jesus said that if you are not faithful in the small things, He will not entrust you with the large things (see Luke 16:10).

Relevant Reminders

Why did God take Gideon’s army of 10,000 and trim it down to 300? One reason is that He wanted to make it clear that this was His victory and not something that Gideon accomplished.

Secondly, He did it to find the truly committed, leaving behind the scared and the half-hearted. God has not called us to an easy life as believers. Being a Christian is difficult, even in the best of circumstances.

 
But God can do more with 300 committed believers than He can with 10,000 wishy-washy people.

 
He is looking for those who are faithful, obedient servants, willing to change the world.

APPLICABLE ACTIONS

In the Book of Acts, Paul and Silas’ ministry was described in this way: “They turned the rest of the world upside down and they are disturbing our city.” May God help us to disturb our world, our homes, and our neighborhoods. Not in an obnoxious way. Not in an irritating or unnecessarily offensive way. But in a godly way where they can see how God has changed your life. It is time to step out and be a true follower of Jesus Christ.

The Bible has a lot to say about the imminent return of Jesus. Our Lord spoke of this often. If you really believe Jesus is coming, it should impact the way that you live. If it does not, you are completely missing the point.

The whole point of studying Bible prophecy is to seek, to be ready for
His return, and thus live a godly life. We believe Jesus is coming. We want to be ready. How should we live as believers in the last days?

Practical Principles

1. We should be shining lights in a dark place. Be ready for all that is coming. Be alert. Be prepared. Even if the Lord does not come as quickly as we had hoped.

2. We are to be watching for Him. Watching is the evidence of faith.

3. We need to be ready to go. To be ready for the return of Jesus is to be engaged in activities you would not be ashamed of if Jesus were to come.

4. We should be anxiously awaiting His return. There is an eagerness. We should have that eagerness.

5. We are to be working. Working is the evidence of faith in action. Watching for the Lord’s return will help us prepare our own lives, but working will assure we bring others with us.

6. We are not to party and drink. We want to be under the influence of God. Scripture says, “Not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust” (Romans 13:13). That is how we are to live as last-days believers.

7. We are to stay away from immorality. Distance yourself from anything that would encourage immoral living.
8. We are not to be competing and arguing with one another. Our competition is not with fellow Christians. It is with the world, the flesh, and the devil. Those are our enemies.

9. We are to focus our energies on becoming like Jesus. “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ”
(Romans 13:14). Have Him be a part of everything that you do. He is Lord of every day of your life. He is Lord of all.

RELEVANT REMINDERS

• Cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light.

• The person who is older in the faith can get a little bit lazy and a little bit lethargic.
When you are spiritually lethargic, you are more vulnerable to sin. We need to wake up! (see Ephesians 5:14).

APPLICABLE ACTIONS

I don’t know when the end of the world will be. No one knows the day or the hour. Does that mean we are wrong to believe He could come back at any moment? Is it a bad thing to be ready to meet God? To serve God? To not get drunk? To not argue? To want to become like Jesus? We read in 2 Peter 3:14, “And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight” (NLT). When Christ comes back we will be ready.

The Plumb Line

Romans_10-13: For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved

For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. – Zechariah 4:10

Small things marked the beginning of the work in the hand of Zerubbabel, but none should despise it, for the Lord had raised up one who would persevere until the work was completed with shouts of joy. The plumb line was in good hands. Here is the comfort of every believer in the Lord Jesus. Let the work of grace be ever so small in its beginnings, the plumb line is in good hands. A master builder greater than Solomon has undertaken to raise the heavenly temple, and He will not fail nor be discouraged till the pinnacle shall be raised. If the plumb line were in the hand of any merely human being, we might fear for the building, but the pleasure of the Lord will prosper in Jesus’ hand.

The works did not proceed irregularly and without care, for the master’s hand carried a good instrument. If the walls had been built in a hurry without proper supervision, they might have been out of line; but the plumb line was used by the chosen overseer. Jesus is always watching the construction of His spiritual temple, to ensure that it is built securely and well. We are for speed, but Jesus is for judgment. He will use the plumb line, and that which is out of line must come down, every stone of it. This explains the failure of many a flattering work, the overthrow of many a glittering profession. It is not for us to judge the Lord’s Church, since Jesus has a steady hand and a true eye and can use the plumb line well. Do we not rejoice to see judgment left to Him?

The plumb line was in active use–it was in the builder’s hand, a sure indication that he meant to bring the work to completion. Lord Jesus, how glad we would be to see You at Your great work. O Zion, the beautiful, your walls are still in ruins! Rise, glorious Builder, and make her desolations to rejoice at Your coming.

Truth Shall Make You Free

John_8-32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Galatians_5-1-1: Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage

“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness” (2 Peter 1:3-4).

During my career in advertising I worked with many well known companies such as American Express and Steinway Pianos. We also created direct response TV commercials for different kinds of products. A direct response TV commercial is a television commercial that offers a product or service via a free call. We learned that the “magic” price point for a product was $19.95. Anything over this would significantly reduce response.

Another key to success was that the product had to be able to demonstrate an ability to solve a felt need by the viewer. Household items that could solve a problem that most people experienced or improved their ability to perform a task were the most successful. Advertising allowed viewers to gain knowledge about a product that could solve a problem. Without this knowledge they would never know such a product existed.

Advertising is usually designed to appeal to people’s wants versus their needs. What we perceive is a need is often simply a want. Peter tells us that the Gospel provides every believer divine power to receive what we need for life and godliness. One way we access this power is through our knowledge of Christ.

The Bible says the “truth shall make you free” (Jn 8:32). When we know what Christ has provided to us we are able to tap into it. We are able to access what He has provided to meet a need or access a solution to a problem. However, if you do not study the scriptures daily, you will never know what is available to you. This would be like receiving a check for a million dollars but never cashing it because you didn’t know you had to. Knowing what to do would allow you to access the money.

Make a commitment to study God’s Word daily and spend time reflecting on His work in your life. Then, you will experience freedom because you will discover what Peter means when he says “the truth shall make you free.”

Colossians 2:6-7
Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Some things you don’t change, swap, or update. In an age when computer processors make major leaps every few months and software companies release new upgrades every year, we get programmed into looking for the new and improved version of everything. The simple but profound truth is that JESUS is LORD. No update needed. No rival worthy. No change necessary. In fact, if we stray from this as the basis of our life, we put all we hold dear at risk. But if we continue, if we grow, if we root ourselves in this truth and make it the undergirding reality of our lives, then our future is secure and our victory assured!

Prayer

Holy God, I thank You for the simple, challenging and enduring truth of Jesus’ Lordship. Through Youe Spirit, I pray that You will conform my life to more closely reflect His lordship in my work, my family, and daily influence. Through the Lord Jesus I pray. Amen.

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest

Proverbs_6-6: Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. – Proverbs 24:33-34

The worst of sluggards only ask for a little slumber; they would be indignant if they were accused of complete laziness. A little folding of the hands to rest is all they desire, and they have a host of reasons to show that this indulgence is entirely legitimate. Yet by these “littles” the day runs out, and the time for work is all gone, and the field is overgrown with thorns. It is by little procrastinations that men ruin their souls. They do not intend to delay for years–a few months, they say, will bring the more convenient season–tomorrow they will attend to serious things; but the present hour is so occupied and so unsuitable that they beg to be excused.

Like sands from an hourglass, time passes; life is wasted by driblets, and seasons of grace lost by little slumbers. Oh, to be wise, to catch the fleeting hour, to use the passing moments! May the Lord teach us this sacred wisdom, because otherwise a poverty of the worst kind awaits us–eternal poverty that will want even a drop of water and beg for it in vain. Like a robber steadily pursuing his victim, poverty overtakes the lazy, and ruin overthrows the undecided: Each hour brings the dreaded pursuer nearer; he doesn’t pause on the way, for he is on his master’s business and must not delay. As an armed man enters with authority and power, in similar fashion want will come to the idle, and death to the impenitent, and there will be no escape.

O that men would become wise and would diligently seek the Lord Jesus, before the solemn day will dawn when it will be too late to plow and to sow, too late to repent and believe. In harvest, it is useless to lament that the seedtime was neglected. As of now, there is still time for faith and holy decision. May we obtain them tonight. Amen!

Because Christ Is In You, The TRUTH Is In You

John_8-32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Psalms_86-11-1: Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

John_14-6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me

Ephesians 6:14
Having girded your loins with TRUTH

The first piece of armor for the Christian warrior is the belt of TRUTH. Jesus said, “I am . . . the truth” (John 14:6). And because Christ is in you, the TRUTH is in you. However, continuing to choose TRUTH is not always easy. Since Satan’s primary weapon is the lie, your belt of TRUTH (which holds the other pieces of body armor in place) is continually being attacked. If he can disable you in the area of TRUTH, you become as easy target for his other attacks.

You stand firm in the TRUTH by relating everything you do to the TRUTH of God’s Word. If a thought comes to mind which is not in harmony with God’s TRUTH, dismiss it. If an opportunity comes along to say or do something which compromises or conflicts with truth, avoid it. Adopt a simple rule of behaviour: IF IT’S THE TRUTH, I’M IN; IF IT’S NOT THE TRUTH, COUNT ME OUT.

When you learn to live in the TRUTH on a daily basis, you will grow to love the TRUTH because you have nothing to hide. You never have to cover up to God or anyone else; everything you do is in the light. Furthermore, when you live in the truth you dislodge the lies of Satan, the father of lies (John 8:44). Remember that if Satan can deceive you into believing a lie, he can control your life.

Jesus prayed, “I do not ask Thee to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one” (John 17:15). How? “Sanctify them in the TRUTH; Thy Word is TRUTH” (verse 17). You will only dislodge Satan’s lies in the light of God’s revelation, and not by human reasoning or research.

The only thing a Christian ever has to admit to is the TRUTH. Walking in the light and speaking the TRUTH in love may seem threatening to some. But in reality TRUTH is a liberating friend and the only path to fellowship with God.

Prayer

Forgive me, Lord, for entertaining lies and walking in darkness. Give me courage to face the TRUTH and to speak the TRUTH in love.

Get you up to a high mountain. – Isaiah 40:9

Each believer should be thirsting for God, for the living God, and longing to climb the hill of the Lord and see Him face to face. We should not rest content in the mists of the valley when the summit of the mountain beckons us. My soul thirsts to drink deeply of the cup that is reserved for those who reach the mountain’s peak and bathe their brows in heaven. How pure are the dews of the hills; how fresh is the mountain air; how abundant is the provision of the dwellers aloft, whose windows look into the New Jerusalem!

Many saints are content to live like men in coal mines, who do not see the sun; they eat dust like the serpent when they might taste the food of angels; they are content to wear the miner’s garb when they might put on king’s robes; tears disfigure their faces when they might anoint them with celestial oil. I am convinced that many a believer pines in a dungeon when he might walk on the palace roof and view the goodly land. Rouse yourself, believer, from your low condition! Discard your laziness, your lethargy, your coldness, or whatever interferes with your sincere and pure love for Christ, your soul’s Husband. Make Him the source, the centre, and the circumference of your soul’s whole range of delight.

What fully enchants you to remain in a pit when you may sit on a throne? Do not live in the lowlands of bondage now that mountain liberty is conferred upon you. Do not be satisfied any longer with your tiny attainments, but press forward to things more sublime and heavenly. Aspire to a higher, a nobler, a fuller life.

Upward to heaven! Nearer to God!
When will Thou come unto me, Lord?
Oh come, my Lord most dear!
Come near, come nearer, nearer still,
I’m blest when Thou art near.

Everything is possible for him who believes

Mark_9-23-1: Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth

“If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.” – Mark 9:23

It is almost as presumptuous to think you can do nothing as to think you can do everything. In other words, be honest about your limitations, but don’t exaggerate them, or use them as an excuse to keep from being a productive person.

Joni Erikson Tada embodies this truth well. Paralyzed below the neck as a result of a diving accident, she has ministered to millions through her speaking, singing, and painting (she holds a paintbrush in her mouth!) What an inspiration she is!

Helen Keller who also embodied this truth expressed such an attitude in this beautiful statement: “I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do.”

O Lord, anoint Your servants

Psalms_23-5: Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Spices for the anointing oil. – Exodus 35:8

Much use was made of this anointing oil under the law, and that which it represents is of primary importance under the Gospel. The Holy Spirit, who anoints us for all holy service, is indispensable to us if we would serve the Lord acceptably. Without His help our religious services are just an empty show, and our inward experience is a dead thing. Whenever our ministry is without unction, what miserable stuff it becomes! And the prayers, praises, meditations, and efforts of private Christians are no better.

A holy anointing is the soul and life of godly devotion, its absence the most serious of all calamities. To go before the Lord without anointing would be like a common Levite thrusting himself into the priest’s role–his religious services would be sins, not sacrifices. May we never embark upon holy tasks without sacred anointing. They fall upon us from our glorious Head; from His anointing we who are but the skirts of His garments receive a generous unction. Choice spices were mixed with great skill and care to form the anointing oil, to let us see how rich are all the influences of the Holy Spirit.

All good things are found in the divine Comforter. Matchless consolation, infallible instruction, immortal quickening, spiritual energy, and divine sanctification are all mixed with other excellences in the heavenly anointing oil of the Holy Spirit. It imparts a delightful fragrance to the character and person of the one upon whom it is poured. Nothing like it can be found in all the treasures of the wealthy or the secrets of the wise. It is not to be imitated. It only comes from God, and it is freely given, through Jesus Christ, to every waiting soul. Let us seek it, for we may have it, even this very evening. O Lord, anoint Your servants.
