1 Kings 2:1-7

Every generation that does not have a succession plan will fizzle out in life. When David was old and about to die he gave specific instructions to Solomon his son, which were expected to be carried out. Solomon was specifically told to keep God’s statutes and walk therein as it was stated in the laws of Moses which was their standard then. This, he pointed out, was also one of the covenant points he had with Jehovah, in order that his seeds might remain as kings in Israel and the dynasty be perpetuated (vs.4).

The handover speech of David to Solomon carried the essential things for him to succeed. Though he did some, he failed in others.

Many of us carry out the part of instructions that are easy to do, but leave or forget others which seem not to appeal to our senses or meet the times we are in. Always take instructions from the Lord and from our elders in the Lord who follow God’s steps. It is for the best of our lives.

God was ready to tell Abraham many things; because He knew Abraham would teach his children to obey Him (Gen. 18:17-19). Whoever wants to have a lasting name on earth through his or her children must teach them to obey and fear God. Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and others were bold to worship, adore and fear the God of Abraham because they were taught to do so.

How are we teaching our children? Do we have enough time for family devotion? Remember, charity begins at home. Train your child in the way he/ she should, and he or she will never depart from it (Prov. 22:6). Do not allow the promises of God to stop with you when you are old and dies, but extend it to your descendants.

1 Kings 2:4
“That the LORD may continue His Word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee a man on the throne of Israel.”

PRAYER:
Everlasting God, help me to follow Your righteous directives, commit them to my children and to their children, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
