And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Romans 6:13, NKJV.

Devotion is not the trivial expression our modern society has endeavoured to make it. God takes devotion very seriously. In God’s language, a devoted thing is that which is set apart to the Lord—not to be taken back at will. As Phillip Doddridge explains, it is easy to see that once our lives are devoted to God, they are no longer ours, and our claim on them must be relinquished. We are no longer our own; we have been bought with a price.

All you are—all you have and all you can do, your time, your possessions, your influence over others—will be devoted to Him, that in the future it may be employed…
