Shoichi Yokoi was a Japanese soldier who fought in the Second World War. That war, of course, ended in 1945—but nobody told Shoichi.

This Japanese soldier sensed the change in the war in 1944, when the Allied forces began to get the upper hand in South Pacific combat. He sought refuge in a cave on the island of Guam. He was afraid that if captured, he would immediately be executed by the American commandos.

Twenty-eight years later Shoichi Yokoi was still living in that cave from which he emerged only in the dark of night. His diet consisted of creatures…
