John_10-11: I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. […] I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. —John 10: 9, 11

Throughout the ancient Mediterranean world, the shepherd was a common sight. The responsibility and attention that it took to tend and care for the sheep was vital. And the shepherd is often used throughout the old testament as a symbol of leadership and the responsibilities that come with it.

When Jesus came, He turned that familiar concept upside down.

Instead of speaking about the leadership and power that a shepherd must have over his flock, He chose to focus on how much the shepherd will sacrifice to protect and care for the sheep.
