The Need for Prison Reform and Social Justice

I spent about 4-5 hours in Ikoyi Prison today interviewing about 20 inmates and these are what I learnt:

1. Many young boys between ages 17-30 are languishing in prison and nobody from their families knows their whereabouts.

2. Many young boys are in prison for stealing and other simple offenses they don’t even know when next their cases are coming up because nobody is following up on their cases and dates.

3. Many young boys are in prison because their mothers and/or fathers are either not alive or divorced or separated or never married.

4. Many young boys are in prison because they do not have anybody or means to perfect their bails.

5. Many young boys are in prison because they kept bad companies due to lack of education, proper parental guidance and lack of shelter.

6. Many young boys are in prison because their magistrates/judges have either retired, been transferred or elevated and nobody outside is them to follow up on next assignment.

7. Many young boys are in prison because they did not know that the charges against them have been struck out but nobody is helping them to follow up on obtaining release warrant from court for their release from the prison.

8. Many young boys are in prison after being released, they found their ways back to the prison again for committing another crime.

9. Many young boys are in prison because some powerful men have taken advantage of their lack of education to oppress them and when they get charged to court nobody shows up for them out of fear of being oppressed too.

10. The maximum capacity for the prison is about 1000 but there are currently over 3000 inmates in the prison and at least 20 new inmates join them daily.

Nne! I say make I let you know, another stubborn lady was just EXPELLED from UNiZik today. Her mother’s connection could not save her.

Obviously she thought she knew her RIGHTS! Obviously She thought one of her rights was INFRINGED upon! And she had to let the person know SHE IS NOT A PUSHOVER!

I watched a dating show a couple of days ago, one of the ladies said “I don’t date men of my age, I go for older men! I am a very stubborn woman! I no dey hear word! Only older men can handle my temperament”

Well that is why she is still single at 35 that is why she is looking for her soul mate at a dating show. NO man running away from the wahala at home, will run into the arms of a stubborn lady. Na person wey wan tachala, go tachala a stubborn girl and dump her, that’s why they end up with many heartbreaks.

STUBBORNNESS is a not VIRTUE My Sister! You dey hear!
