Jonah 1:1–17

In today’s reading, Prophet Jonah slept in spite of the commotion and danger around him. Could he have been so tired to go into deep sleep that all the noise and panic did not disturb him? The same scenario was replicated by our Lord Jesus Christ as He slept off when His disciples were confronted with danger of storm on the Sea of Galilee.

This attitude of unconcern to their personal safety by Jonah and Jesus Christ was uncommon to normal human reaction when faced with danger. However, Psalms 124:1-5; 129:1-2 give us a kind of insight into their state of mind when danger was around them. An implicit trust in the abiding presence of the Almighty God would make them look at these dangers with scorn.

When faced with life’s challenges and danger, our faith in God is challenged as well. Even when Jonah said he should be thrown into the sea, it was not suicidal; he knew his God was in control of his circumstances. What a great faith!

Do we trust God enough to allow Him to be in charge? When we call on God in our panic and doubt, we instruct Him on what to do as if He is lesser than our imagination. When we call on God to take control, leave the situation entirely for Him, He takes charge of everything, puts things under control and gives you His peace. God will never come to our aid as long as we fail to trust Him with our lives. Let us always trust in His ability and power to save.

MEMORY VERSE: Jonah 1:17 “But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.”

PRAYER: Thank You Great God, for being always around to save whenever the enemy compounded me on all sides.
