Oscar Hammerstein wrote the lyrics for such musicals as “The Sound of Music” and “The King and I.” He was a consummate craftsman who appreciated attention to fine detail. That’s why a newspaper photograph of the Statue of Liberty caught his attention. It had been taken from a helicopter in such a way that it showed the top of the statue’s head.
