Stay Thou nearby

Temptations lose their power

When Thou art nigh

In joy or pain

Come quickly and abide

Or life is vain

I need Thee, O I need Thee

Every hour I need Thee

O bless me now, my Saviour

I come to Thee

4.

I need Thee every hour,

Teach me Thy will;

And Thy rich promises

I need thee ev’ry hour,

Most holy One.

Oh, make me thine indeed,

Thou blessed Son!

I need Thee, O I need Thee

Every hour I need Thee

O bless me now, my Saviour

I come to Thee

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND THE SONG!

Hawks, Annie Sherwood. Mrs. Hawks was born on May 28, 1835. She died in 1918.

“I need Thee every hour” was written in April, 1872.

When this hymn was first published in 1873, this Bible verse was included underneath the title:

“Without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5 KJV).

Each of the first four stanzas of this hymn dwells on a different facet of our dependence on God: our need for His peace, our inability to resist temptation alone, our need to find true meaning in life, and our desire to see God’s promises fulfilled.

The fifth stanza is an intense plea for God’s presence.

“I believe this hymn was the expression of her own experience. It came to her in the form of five simple stanzas, to which Lowry added the chorus to make it more serviceable.

It is full of inspiration at its first reading.

Without Jesus I can do nothing. That’s why I need him every hour every minute and every second.

The refrain resonates with a solemn cry as from a bent knee and a dull face crying:

“I need thee,…  every hour, O bless me now my Saviour, I come to Thee.

May the Lord help us to run to Him when the storms of life come and the tribulations surround us.

May He help us see that without Him we are left to our own devices and our own unworthy righteousness.

May He open our eyes to see ourselves as a people who desperately need Him as a Saviour and Sovereign God.

“I need Thee every hour,

In joy or pain;

Come quickly and abide,

Or life is vain.”

“Temptations lose their power

When Thou art nigh.”

“No tender voice like Thine Can peace afford.”

Thank You Jesus,

Salvation Prayers

If you don’t Know Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour and would like to accept him into your life as your personal Lord and Saviour, Please say this prayer:

Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from You. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward You. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that Your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your Will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
