My Daily Proclamation

Psalm 118:17 (KJV): I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD
Psalm 118:17 (KJV): I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD

The Word of God is in my heart and in my mouth, even the word of truth which I’ve received. My words are potent, bringing forth victories, increase, promotion and abundance for me. My life is the testimony of God’s grace, glory and excellence. I am the world’s light; no one who follows me stumbles around in darkness. I give men light to live in. I have victory in my spirit; I’m filling everywhere, with the glory of God. There’s a shout of victory, in my spirit. Everything that’s connected with me flows in this victory. Glory to God! Amen!

Thank You Jesus,

Salvation Prayers

If you don’t Know Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour and would like to accept him into your life as your personal Lord and Saviour, Please say this prayer:

Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from You. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward You. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that Your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your Will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Hymn 618. The sower went forth sowing

The sower went forth sowing;

The seed in secret slept

Through days of faith and patience,

Till out the green blade crept;

And warmed by golden sunshine,

And fed by sliver rain,

At last the fields were whitened

To harvest once again

O praise the heav’nly Sower

Who gave the fruitful seed,

And watch’s and water’d duly,

And ripen’d for our need.

2:

Behold! The heavenly Sower

Goes forth with better seed,

The word of sure Salvation,

With feet and hands that bleed;

Here in His church ’tis scattered,

Our spirits are the soil;

Then let an ample fruitage

Repay His pain and toil.

O beautiful the harvest

Wherein all goodness thrives,

And this the true thanksgiving,

The first-firsts of our lives.

3:

Within a hallowed acre

He sows yet other grain,

When peaceful earth receiveth

The dead He died to gain;

For, though the growth be hidden,

We know that they shall rise;

Yea, even now that they ripen

In sunny paradise.

O summer land of harvest,

O fields forever white

With souls that wear Christ’s raiment

With crowns of golden light!

4:

One day the heavenly Sower

Shall reap where He hath sown,

And come again rejoicing,

And with Him bring His own;

And then the fan of judgment

Shall winnow from His floor

The chaff into the furnace

That flameth evermore

O holy, awful Reaper,

Have mercy in the day

Thou puttest in Thy sickle,

And cast us not away.

Thank You Jesus,

Thank You Jesus! Thank You Father! Our Maker, our shield, our sufficiency, our yesterday, our today, our tomorrow, our forever, hallowed be Your name. Thank You for Your presence in our midst today, thank You for all that You’ve done for us in time past, Father we have come again this morning, we are here because we knew that You will be here, thank You for honoring us with Your presence; Father thank You for Your word that You’re going to speak to us, thank You for Your leading in our lives, Your hand upon us; thank You for Your Spirit, thank You for everything.

Lord God of heaven, we ask this morning like never before, please speak to us, give us understanding, glorify Your name in us now and ever in the mighty name of Jesus. Praise the living Jesus!

I welcome everyone to the presence of the Most High this morning; I want to acknowledge life, that I’m standing here is only by the grace of God and I thank God for that, and I know it’s the same for you, for every one of us, so we thank God for life. I would like to acknowledge in his absence, our father in the Lord, the APICR of Region 11 for giving me this opportunity to share the word today, thank you daddy, God bless you in the name of Jesus.

Before we go into the word today, I would like to make two announcements – the first one is the prayer chain; tomorrow by the grace of God, our prayer chain, the topic is ‘The Supernatural Help’, our text is taken from Psalm 121: 1 – 8; then the second announcement is around our Evening of Hymns, everybody will receive a copy of this by the grace of God after this service as we’re going out, please if you need more than one, take it, the idea is to give other people and use it to invite, we are inviting you, so you go out and invite other people, it’s a provincial program and we want as many people to be part of this program especially here, it’s the first of its kind, it’s inaugural, please come. Evening of Hymns, Sunday 22nd at 4 pm, it will not take time, maximum 2 and a half hours so that you still have time for late in the evening and also to prepare for Monday, and the dress code is white, but please let nobody say I won’t come because I don’t have white, a touch of white or even if there’s no white please come, the white around will whiten you, hallelujah!

So we go into the message for today, please turn with me to Psalm 23 – by the way, the hymn and the choir ministration already prepared a ground for my message, so thank God for what He’s doing; “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord today, tomorrow, this week, this month, this year, forever more, praise the Lord!

The topic before us this morning is Who is Leading You?, please ask your neighbor who is leading you? You know it’s easy to ask somebody a question, now ask yourself, who is leading me? The other way to look at it is who are you following? And then who am I following? Many of us know about following – I’m following this person on Instagram, who are you following?

Quick definitions – to lead is to guide on a way, especially by going in advance; to lead is to guide, to lead is to direct on a course or in a direction; and to follow is the other side of it, to move or to come after a person or something that is already going ahead. So if you take the first one, who is leading you, you’re looking at who is guiding you, who is directing you; if you say who are you following, that is who is ahead that you are coming behind from, praise the living Jesus!

So this message, who is leading you, it suggests that there is someone that is going ahead of you that you are following, that you’re coming after; the message is to stimulate us to hold on fast onto our Christian journey, taking after the One that is going before us, is also to help us to direct the steps for those who are following in the wrong direction to help us realign, it will also encourage those who have not even started at all and they are wondering where are they going to get on the track and start this same journey.

By the grace of God, in the course of this message we’ll look at a few lessons and if time will permit we’ll close it today; so the first lesson is that everyone is following somebody, there’s at least one person next to you, everyone is following even though we all want to be leaders in our respective vocations, circles or ministry, in everything that we do, the truth is that we are following someone else, at least we are all being led and as a result we’re also being influenced to do what we are doing. In 1 Corinthians 11:1, Apostle Paul says be ye followers of me, even as I am also of Jesus Christ; he’s saying you are my followers, but even me I’m following Jesus, hallelujah!

Under this first lesson, Ecclesiastes 3: 11-13 tells us that God makes everything beautiful in His own time, and in verse 12 it says that there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can; as long as we can therefore says that the life that we have is a journey as long as we can. There is a journey, this journey is full of uncertainties, on this journey we are faced with a lot of decision- making situations, decisions like today should I come to church, what dress should I wear; sometimes on this journey it feels like we’re on the mountain, everything is working, economy is increasing, businesses are doing well, bonuses are coming in, dividends are flying in every now and then, the children are doing well in school, business as well, promotions every month, like we’re on the mountain.

And some other times on this journey it’s like we’re in the valley, like nothing is working, what’s happening in this economy, what’s happening to our business, what’s happening in our marriage, what’s happening to my finances, where am I going, what’s tomorrow looking like, it’s like we are in the valley.

And some other times it feels like a war zone, every now and then you have to war, you have to do something; and some other times is like it’s peace like a river, it’s the journey of life, it’s quite easy to get carried away, perhaps to lose it or to become overly excited when it feels like we’re on the mountain, and also when it feels like we’re in the valley it’s also so easy to say God where are You, where’s Your face, and also to lose it, this underscores the need for us to follow someone or to be led by someone who knows the way or who knows where it will all end.

Then like every other journey the journey of life has a terminal point, has a final destination, hallelujah! Ephesians 3: 1 & 2, to everything there is a season, and every activity under the heavens has a time. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to harvest; so there is a final destination to this journey, and when I said the final destination, it even goes beyond just the going away from here, if you are following a leader who knows that at the end of this, because there’s a final destination there will be accountability, even in the course of the journey of life as you are following him, the leader also is preparing you to become accountable.

But if you are following a leader who feels that after this there’s nothing else, let’s all end it here, it will also reflect in the way we live and then we live as if there’s no care, live carelessly, desperately, recklessly as if it will all end here, but there’s a destination and what is this destination, the final destination of this journey is not just when we close our eyes and there’s no breath again, the final destination of this journey is in eternity, either eternal life or eternal damnation.

So if there is a leader who thinks that there’s nothing about eternal life, it says let us finish it here, but a leader who knows that there is still accountability afterwards says live your life in such a way that when you transit then you will make the best of it, hallelujah! Therefore, every man, every woman needs a leader; every man, every woman needs a guide in this journey of life.

In Acts 8, there is a story there that many of us are familiar with; there was an Ethiopian eunuch, he was reading the Bible and the Spirit of the Lord led Philip and said ‘go to him’, and as soon as Philip got to him, he greeted him and said do you understand what you are reading? And the eunuch says how will I understand when there is no one that will share with me, that’s from verses 32 – 35; and the example of this eunuch is like our lives, many people go through life but the question is do you understand this life that you are journeying on?

The truth is that we do not know except there is somebody that will interpret it to us; many of us are living, there is this Yoruba saying that ‘aba ni ikan n da, ikan kan o le mo apata’, what does that mean, ikan is termite, anytime when we see termites hill we say these things are beautiful, it wasn’t because they are intelligent, they were just trying and it turned out to become a termite hill, praise the Lord! So many people without a guide, without a leader in life will just be living life and end up anywhere.

In Luke 6:39, the Bible says “Can the blind lead the blind?” The answer is simple, to the extent that the road is straight, the blind who is leading will continue, but when he also gets to a point where it’s difficult, he falls, the person following him falls also, that underscores the fact that we need a leader, somebody who knows the way.

Lesson number two, that every one of us will therefore have to choose a leader, this choice may be by default, you do nothing, a leader will be imposed on you and you know that leader that will be imposed on you if you do nothing; you do something, you are deliberate about following a leader then he leads you in the way. There are three possible options of leaders on this journey of life; it could be a man, can be the devil and it can also be God, praise the living Jesus!

Many people pattern their lives after a man, they look at a man and say this man is successful, I want to be like him, do you know who he’s following? That’s why you find many people successful out there in the eyes of the world but to God they are not, and then you find that one CEO of this global all over the world one day wakes up and committed suicide at age 42 and you wonder ‘ah, but everything was going well’, it’s because he’s a man who is going on a journey alone and does not know where it will end and he doesn’t know where to go, praise the living Jesus!

Many of these leaders also position themselves over us so that you don’t see any other person; leaders, please if people are following us as everybody has somebody also following, let us also lead them after the One that we are following who we’ll soon see very shortly.

In 2 Samuel 15: 11-13, is the story of Absalom; Absalom was the first son of David, he was very charismatic, he created a kingdom in a kingdom; while his father was a king, he would tell people anytime you want to see the king come to me first, let us talk about it and he will counsel them, he’ll tell them what to do, even maybe possibly resolve them so they don’t need to go to the king. Over time he acquired fame, was very charismatic, then one day he decided that he too can become king now, so he chose to go with 50 horsemen, but 250 people followed him, guess what, one of the advisers of his father followed him, what did they see, a charismatic Absalom, but what happened to Absalom at the end of the day, he died abruptly because he was going nowhere, because he was just a man walking and a lot of people queued behind him.

Brethren, let us be mindful of who the leader that we follow is; if you are following a man, I’m not saying don’t follow any man because everybody must follow a man, but follow a man that is following a leader who knows the way, praise the living Jesus! The reason is that sometimes also the heart of man is deceitful and desperately wicked, who would have thought in Genesis 4 that Cain would lead his brother and when they got to the field he invited his brother, come let’s go to the field and he killed him there, that’s a leader, somebody was following him and he killed him, the heart of man can be deceitful, praise the living Jesus!

There was this story about four years ago, I think a few of us will remember it, some school students – four of them, girls, left the school under the understanding that they were going to see the uncle of one of them, so they went with the taxi, when they got there and they finished, only three came back into the taxi, so the taxi driver was curious and was like where is the fourth person, I think he didn’t get a good answer, out of the curiosity of course he blew the alarm and they found that the other three had actually conspired to go and donate her to an herbalist, so the supposed uncle was a herbalist and they wanted to use her to make money, that’s a leader, the heart of man is deceitful and desperately wicked, praise the living Jesus!

The second type of leader is the devil, Satan; the devil as we know is on the prowl to populate his final destination, he doesn’t want to be alone. In 1 Peter 5:8, the Bible says be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour; the only thing that the devil is interested in are the people that he will roast, he is very cunning, he comes in a very cunning way.

Genesis 3:1-6, we know the story, the serpent went to Eve, he did not say don’t do what God asked you to do, he said did God ask you not to eat any of these trees, did God ask you not to eat anything at all? Then she said no, God said we should eat everything except this one; see where he started from, he said no, even that one you can eat it, nothing will happen, try it, you will see you’ll be like God – deceitful, cunning, that’s the devil, and what was he interested in, he found that God was having a daily relationship, communion with man and he was envious, he needed to destroy that, he couldn’t stand the fact that the position he lost, somebody else has taken that position, hallelujah!

He comes like a spirit of wrong counsel, he leads people – his captive to do the wrong thing and he’s the same person that will go and blow alarm before God and say see the person You want to bless, see what he’s doing. In 1 Kings 13, there was this story of the old prophet and the new prophet, God has given the new prophet an instruction, go, deliver my message, don’t eat anything, don’t go into any house, turn back and go back to Jerusalem, and he was already doing that until an old prophet came to him and said even me I’m a prophet like you now, just as you were going, an angel told me that I should ask you to come back – spirit of lie.

And then he went supposedly to a prophet like himself, and as soon as they were on the table eating, the Bible says then the real Spirit of God now took over that old prophet and prophesied that because he disobeyed God he would not make it back home, and indeed he did not make it back home because on his way a lion attacked him and he was torn to pieces, he was killed, nobody could touch his carcass, everybody came there and saw it, because the devil wanted to roast somebody, that’s who the devil is as a leader, I’m trying to expose the devil, he makes his followers to feel very comfortable that even in the wrong, that it’s the right thing they are doing; they are doing the wrong things but he wants them to be comfortable they are doing the right thing, how?

2 Corinthians 4:4, the Bible says the God of this air has blinded their mind, so what he does is that because sometimes we are wondering can’t this person see that this is wrong, they can no longer see because the god of the air has blinded their mind so they could not see it again, so they will be doing the wrong thing until whatever is used to block their mind is taken.

In the Book of Acts 7, a young man called Saul was part of the people who were there when they were killing Stephen, he was an apprentice so when they were doing it they gave him the clothes, you watch over our clothes, then he graduated in chapter 8; the Bible says that he now began to persecute so much that the Christians began to scatter; and then in Acts 9, on his way to Damascus to do the same thing that he has perfected over time, then God arrested him and then that which the devil has used to blind his mind was taken away and he saw the light and the Saul became Paul who became the greatest apostle of this new testament. I pray if there’s anyone here today whose mind the devil has blinded, the Lord Almighty will visit you this morning and He will lift whatever veil the devil has put on you in the mighty name of Jesus.

So who is the third leader that we can consider? The third leader is God, our Lord Jesus Christ, who is He? He is the way, so when we are talking about the journey of life and somebody introduced Himself in John 14:6, says ‘I am the way’, if He’s the way, mind you, none of the other people have come to tell us that they are the way, so they couldn’t lie about that, there can be only one way, so the One who says I’m the way truly is the one to follow because He knows where to take you, hallelujah!

He is the light of the world; in John 9:5 the Bible says as long as I am in the world I am the light of the world’, what does it mean? The world is like a dark place, if you don’t know what you are doing you’ll be groping in the dark, but if you have the light of the world as part of your journey, He illuminates your path and then you can see more clearly, praise the living Jesus!

I remember many years ago, I was working in an organization where the only thing that you can predict they will do is that they will lie, the only thing that is predictable is that they will do it wrong, so it was like running against an institution. So one day one of the top executives called me, he said Tunde, I’ve watched you, this your God just continue to serve Him; he said you are like a man whose eyes were covered, blindfolded, and they left you to go on a landmine and you navigated in such a way that you did not detonate any of those. They wanted you to do something but it never happened but you did not know that they were plotting behind you; because there is somebody who is called the Light, even in the darkness of the world the light will take you through. I pray for you today, it does not matter what you are going through, in the mighty name of Jesus the light of the world will shine for you in the name of Jesus.

He’s the Author and Finisher of our faith, the meaning of that is that He was there when you were created; Author, He knows why you were created, He knows where you are supposed to be at a certain time, so if you are not there if He’s the One leading you, He will tell you you need to be here. He knows when you will run into troubles and He has a solution for your trouble because the Bible says right from the foundation of the world His works are known unto Him, so He knows when there will be problem and He has solutions to your problem, so if you are not following this person, life will be suboptimal.

He’s the Bread of Life; what does that mean? He’s the Sustainer, when you get to a point where you are famished, lack of ideas, lack of the will, lack of zeal to go, the Bread of Life is there to sustain you, the Bread of Life is there to energize you, the Bread of Life is there to keep you going; He’s the Bread of Life, John 6: 35, I am the Bread of Life, praise the living Jesus!

Then He knows your struggles, He sees your challenges, He knows them, He has passed through similar challenges when He was here, He can fix them, He knows your name, He knows your every breath, He knows when you rise up, when you are doing well, He knows when you are down. In Exodus 3:10, the Bible says, and the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people (God knows), and I have come to deliver them, hallelujah!

Who is this God? He is full of compassion and love, even when you are already following a bad leader, because of His love and compassion He will still come to you, praise the living Jesus! Psalm 145:8, the Bible says the Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; He’s slow to anger, and great in mercy; Lamentations 3:22, His compassions they fail not, because they are renewed every day; what you did yesterday He wrote it off, you started on a clean slate today.

To round it off, He’s all powerful, He can do all things; if you’re in the valley, His hands are long enough to go there and bring you out; if you are in trouble, His hands are long enough to keep you; if you are going through tough times, He’s able to unwind situations to work in your favor.

Proverbs 21: 1, the heart of kings and men are in the hands of God and He can fashion it like rivers of water to favor His children; He’s the creator of the whole universe; Psalms 62:1, once He has spoken, twice I have heard, power belongs to Him.

So lesson number three, now we’ve seen that we need leaders, now we know the leaders, those who can lead, your success or otherwise in life and your final destination is a function of who is leading you, do we agree with that? Your success or otherwise in life, one, and your final destination whether eternal life or eternal damnation is a function of who is leading you. The devil does not know any other place to go, he knows that he will end up in hell, the end of the devil is the lake of fire, the only place the devil can lead anybody to is the same place because he doesn’t know anything better; if it’s a man that is leading you a man will get to the middle of the road and then say I don’t know where else to turn to, so the person will be stranded.

If you are following a man, there will be disappointment; if you follow the devil, there will be shame, there will be pain, there will be injury, there will be afflictions; but if you follow God, Jesus Christ, you are bound not only to enjoy this life but also enjoy the life that comes after, hallelujah!

So brethren, I bring before you this morning the Lord Jesus Christ who is the real deal, He’s the real deal, compassionate and loving, He’s a guide of life and He covers our back in the battles of life.

We have a few examples in the scripture, Moses; Moses was born under circumstances that were very questionable but then God protected him, it was God that led his mother to go and throw him in water, it was God that led the daughter of Pharaoh to come at that same time, it was God that led her to pick him to the palace, it was God that led Pharaoh not to say this is not mine, look at his color, but in spite of that they raised him; it was God that led him to go to Median, it was God that led him back to lead the people. A life that is led by God is a life of success, a life that is led by God is a life of victory, hallelujah!

Another example is Judas Iscariot; even though the Master says I will help you, Judas Iscariot says I have another leader and the leader gave him an idea, I will make you rich quick, how about giving you 30 shekels of silver; he said ah, that’s a lot of money, but you have to do something simple for me, (you know how the devil does, he pushes people first on a slope where you can’t come back again); he says all you just need to do is identify your Master; haha, that’s a simple thing now, I will do it for you, but unknown to him as soon as he did it guilt took him over which was devil’s plan to slaughter him, you can see the different leaders, praise the living Jesus!

What determines or how do you know who is your leader or what determines who your leader will be? One point, the spirit that is in you determines who is leading you. Romans 6:16, know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants you are to whom you obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? If you yield your body and say Satan you are the master, lead me, then that is because that’s your spirit, that’s who leads you, but if the spirit that says I’m after Jesus Christ, that’s the One that will lead you, so what is your choice today brethren?

Are you going to take salvation or are you going to harden your heart? Hebrews 3:7 & 8 says don’t harden your heart today; don’t harden your heart when the call comes; are you going to live in righteousness or to continue to live in sin? Hebrews 1:9, God has loved righteousness and hated iniquity, so if you want to follow God you need to love what He loves – righteousness. How does God lead? God is the same forever, brethren, He does not change; there’s this song ‘He changeth not’, He doesn’t change, Arugbo ojo, Ancient of days who remains the same forever’.

Hebrews 13:8, Jesus Christ yesterday and today and forever; Malachi 3:6, I am the Lord, I change not, and that’s why ye sons of Jacob are not consumed; He changes not, so His methods and ways remains the same.

So how does God lead? By His Spirit, of course we know if your spirit determines who you follow, then He leads by His Spirit. John 4:24, the Bible says God is Spirit, you want to follow God, your spirit must communicate with His Spirit. How does God lead? Through His word; for example you are hearing the word this morning, Psalm 119: 105, your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path; Psalm 119:11, your word have I hid in my heart so that I will not sin against you. How does He lead? By speaking; Samuel, Samuel, Samuel, speak Lord – by speaking.

How does He lead? He uses signs; Moses got into the field and saw bush burning but not consumed. How does He lead? Through dreams and visions; Paul had a dream in Acts 22 and he knew that even though there will be shipwreck there will be no loss of life.

Benefits, when God leads you what do you stand to gain? When out of these three possible leaders you choose God, what do you stand to gain?

Number one, when God leads you, you know that you can never miss the way because He is the way. When the way leads you you’re already on the way, you can never miss; so this issue of life, you get to one point they said you are going to start again, you get to one point they say things are no longer working, brethren, when God is leading you, because He’s the way you can never miss the way.

When God is leading you what people struggle with you will do it effortlessly. Genesis 24, Abraham sent Eliezer, go and get a wife for my son, big task, but it must be from this, this and this, but because God was leading, God positioned everything, in one minute everything was done. From today in the mighty name of Jesus, those things that you are struggling with, as God begins to lead you, effortlessly you will make results in the mighty name of Jesus.

When God is leading you, you will surely reach your destination. When a man is leading you he gets to one point and says I don’t know where to go again and then all of you are stranded in the middle. When the devil is leading you, he takes you off tangent away from your destination; but when God is leading you, He knows the reason why you were created, He takes you through that path until you get to the end, you cannot miss it when God is leading you, hallelujah!

When God is leading you, you shall not lack any good thing. That passage we read from, Psalm 23, the Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want, (why?) Because He makes me to lie down in green pastures, (abundance), and He leads me. When God is leading you, He will give you the grace to please Him. Psalm 23:3 says and he restores my soul, so every time your soul is weakened He gives you strength again to continue. When God is leading you, divine provision and overflowing provision shall be order of the day; verse 5 says you prepare the table in the presence of my enemies and overflow, when God is leading you that is it.

When God is leading you it shall be blessing forever; verse 6, surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days, that’s what happens when God is leading you, hallelujah!

Brethren, in summary, this our month of divine favor, do you know that to have God leading you is favor? Exodus 33:13 & 14, now therefore I pray thee, if I have found grace; another translation says favor in thy sight, show me the way, meaning lead me, and then God said in the next verse, I will not only lead I will go with you, hallelujah! So when God is leading you, you’ll find favor and you will exhibit the character of the person that leads you: if it is God you will show the kind of God, if it’s the other way you will show the fruits of the other way.

Your success in life brethren, is determined by who is leading you; He doesn’t give unconditionally, God doesn’t give unconditionally; when you follow man it ends in disappointment; if you follow the devil it ends in disaster, but if you follow God He takes you to a brighter tomorrow, praise the living Jesus!

The devil knows where he’s going, so anybody who is following the devil, the only way the devil can succeed in leading anyone is by deceit, is by lies, is by manipulation, and shrouding things in darkness because every reasonable person knows what is good and what is bad but the devil had to now use those things, hallelujah! But God is open, praise the living Jesus!

Jesus Christ is the way to the Father, we established that already, let us be sure that we take the right decision today brethren, as to who is leading you. If God is leading you, you will have a successful life and after this life you will end up in eternal life; if the devil is leading you, the devil will give one and take 10, that’s how the devil operates; he gave Judas Iscariot 30 shekels he took his life, if God is leading you, even after this life, John 14: 1-3, He said I have gone to prepare a place for you and then I will come back to take you, so that the place where I am there you will be also, praise the living Jesus!

However brethren, the first step to have God to lead you is to surrender to God; that passage we read from said to whom you yield your spirit or your body, that’s the one that you will obey; you must first yield your body to God, you must first yield, when you yield you surrender to Him and say from today I put my hands in Your hands, lead me, He will lead you gladly, He’s waiting for you.

So before we go to pray I would like as many of us who are here, you are not sure who is leading you, three different categories: you are not sure who is leading you, to be very sure come and accept Jesus, surrender your life to Him; the second category is you know and you know who is leading you, you know it’s not God, it’s either a man who doesn’t know where he’s going or the devil, you know in your heart of heart, please come and surrender your life. And the third category, if like Judas Iscariot, once you followed God but then when the allure of life flashed into your eyes you went back and took the offer of the devil, come back home.

If you are here this morning you want to surrender your life to Jesus Christ, you want to start life afresh, you want to anchor yourself into the real deal – Jesus Christ…

[Altar call]

Brethren let us rise up, let’s begin to pray, our first prayer is a prayer of thanksgiving, let us pray and say Father, I thank You, I thank You Lord for Your favor, I thank You for Your mercy, I thank You for Your leading; thank You heavenly Father, glory be to Your name forever more, in Jesus mighty name we have prayed.

Interestingly when our mommy was preaching about two weeks ago, she made reference to a song, ‘I have decided to follow Jesus’, so after doing everything yesterday night, I didn’t even know, from nowhere that song just came, I said ah okay, so maybe this is the season for that song. So I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back, that’s going to be our next prayer point because the meaning of having God to lead you is saying I have decided to follow Jesus, what happened to Judas Iscariot will not happen to me in the mighty name of Jesus.

So we are going to pray: Father in the name of Jesus, please help me to follow You and You alone from today and forever; help me oh Lord that I will not go back, I will not go back into the world; help me oh Lord to follow You, Father please lead me all through life in the mighty name of Jesus. Thank You heavenly Father, in Jesus mighty name we have prayed.

Finally, I want us to take a prayer point for our nation; Father, please visit our nation, visit our leaders, whatever You will need to do let them follow You, let us turn that to prayer points.

Hymn 620. God moves in a mysterious way

God moves in a mysterious way

His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea,

And rides upon the storm.

2:

Deep in unfathomable mines

Of never failing skill

He treasures up His bright designs,

And works His sovereign will.

3:

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take!

The clouds ye so much dread

Are big with mercy, and shall break

In blessings on your head.

4:

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,

But trust Him for His grace;

Behind a frowning providence

He hides a smiling face.

5:

His purposes will ripen fast,

Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,

But sweet will be the flower.

6:

Blind unbelief is sure to err,

And scan His work in vain;

God is His own interpreter,

And He will make it plain.

Food For Thought:

  9. What is hidden “behind a frowning providence”?
  10. How quickly do God’s purposes ripen, according to verse 5?
  11. What contrast is made about the “bud” and the “flower” in verse 5?
  12. What two negative consequences are associated with “blind unbelief” in verse 6?
  13. Who is God’s “own interpreter” in verse 6?
  14. What promise is made about God’s work in the final line of the hymn?
  15. What is the overarching message of comfort and trust in God’s sovereignty conveyed by this hymn?
  16. How can we trust God’s plan when we don’t understand His ways?
  17. What role does faith play in navigating life’s uncertainties?
  18. How do we distinguish between God’s sovereignty and human free will?

Hymn 644:  I Have Been To the Fountain of Cleansing

I have been to the fountain of cleansing

And plung’d neath the life giving flow

‘Tis the blood shed of Calvary’s mountain

That makes the soul whiter than snow

CHORUS

O yes it makes whiter than snow

The blood cleanses me, this I know

Since it c1eans’d me from sin

I have Jesus within,

His blood cleanses whiter than snow

2:

I have been to the fountain of cleansing

Found peace in the crucified One

All my sins by His grace have been cancelled

And heav’n in my soul is begun

3:

I have been to the fountain of cleansing

And glory is flooding my soul

Hallelujah! My heart is rejoicing

His blood makes me ev’ry white whole

Hymn 645: I’ve a Saviour, kind and tender,

I’ve a Saviour, kind and tender,

I’ve a Saviour full of grace,

And a smile of winning sweetness

Ever beams upon His face:

In my heart’s shrine of affection

He shall hold the highest place.

CHORUS

How I love Him! How I love Him

Since for me He bled and died

How I love Him, yes I love Him

More than all the world beside.

2:

For my sake He came from heaven

To this world of sin and shame;

Bore my guilt, though He was guiltless,

And though blameless, took my blame:

Can I ever cease to love Him,

And His goodness to proclaim?

3:

Though I’ve often been unworthy,

He has constant been, and true;

Though I wronged Him, He forgave me

When I would my vows renew;

Though I spumed Him, He with kindness

My rebellious heart did woo.

4:

I’ve a Saviour, kind and tender,

He would be your Saviour too;

Will you not accept the pardon

Which He freely offers you?

Take Him now as your Redeemer;

Earth has not a friend so true.

Luke_2-11: For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Hymn 646: O what a wonderful, wonderful day

O what a wonderful, wonderful day

Day I will never forget;

After I’d wandered in darkness away,

Jesus my Saviour I met.

O what a tender, compassionate friend –

He met the need of my heart;

Shadows dispelling, With joy I am telling,

He made all the darkness depart !

CHORUS

Heaven came down and glory fill my soul,

When at the cross the Saviour made me whole;

My Sins were washed away

And my night was tuned to day

Heaven came down and glory filled my soul!

2:

Born of the Spirit with life from above

Into God’s family divine,

Justified fully thru Calvary’s love,

O what a standing is mine!

And the transaction so quickly was made

When as a sinner I came,

Took of the offer Of grace He did proffer –

He saved me, O praise His dear name!

3:

Now I’ve a hope that will surely endure

After the passing of time;

I have a future in heaven for sure,

There in those mansions sublime.

And it’s because of that wonderful day

When at the cross I believed;

Riches eternal And blessings supernal

From His precious hand I received.

Hymn 649: I remember when my burdens rolled away

1:

I remember when my burdens roll’d away,

I had carried them for years, night and day!

When I sought the blessed Lord,

and I took Him at His Word,

Then at once all my burdens roll’d away.

CHORUS

Roll’d away, roll’d away,

I am happy since my burdens roll’d away;

Roll’d away, roll’d away;

I am happy since my burdens roll’d away.

2:

I remember when my burdens roll’d away,

That I fear’d would never leave night or day;

Jesus show’d to me the loss, so

I left them at the cross;

I was glad when my burdens roll’d away.

3:

I remember when my burdens roll’d away,

That had hinder’d me for years, night and day;

As I sought the throne of grace,

just a glimpse of Jesus’ face,

And I knew that my burdens could not stay.

4:

I am singing since my burdens roll’d away,

There’s a song within my heart night and day;

I am living for my King,

and with joy I shout and sing,

Hallelujah! all my burdens roll’d away.

Anne Graham Lotz reminds us: God knows you! Find blessed relief in God’s understanding, acceptance, and grace. You don’t have to prove yourself

God Knows You and Me

He knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

Psalm 103:14, NIV

God will never expect more from me than the Holy Spirit will do in and through me if I allow Him the freedom.

What a blessed relief to be reminded that God knows me.  In fact, He knows me so well He understands that apart from Him I can do nothing.

I don’t have to prove myself to God.

I don’t have to worry about disappointing God.

I don’t have to earn His respect.

I don’t have to deserve His blessings.

I don’t have to work hard to be accepted.

I don’t have to produce a quota.

I don’t have to be successful.

He created me in the first place. “He knows how [I] am formed, he remembers that [I] am dust.” I am just a little dust person infused with the very breath of God!

Hymn 651:  I was sinking deep in sin

Billows His will obey;

He your Saviour wants to be,

Be saved today!

When I am in distress,

Hymn 656: ‘In Tenderness He Sought Me’ – A moving testament to Jesus’ compassionate pursuit, saving grace, and the joy of His presence.

Hymn 656: In tenderness He sought me

1:

In tenderness He sought me,

Weary and sick with sin,

And on His shoulders brought me

Back to His fold again.

While angels in His presence sang,

Until the courts of heaven rang.

Chorus:

Oh, the love that sought me!

Oh, the blood that bought me!

Oh, the grace that brought me to the fold,

Wondrous grace that brought me the fold!

2:

He washed the bleeding sin wounds,

And poured in oil and wine;

He whispered to assure me

“I’ve found thee, thou art Mine;”

I never heard a sweeter voice,

It made my aching heart rejoice!

3:

He pointed to the nail prints,

For me His blood was shed,

A mocking crown so thorny,

Was placed upon His head:

I wondered what He saw in me,

To suffer such deep agony.

4:

I’m sitting in His presence,

The sunshine of His face

While with adoring wonder

His blessings I retrace.

It seems as if eternal days

Are far too short to sound His praise.

5:

So while the hours are passing,

All now is perfect rest;

I’m waiting for the morning,

The brightest and the best,

When He will call. us to His side,

To be with Him, His spotless bride.

James_1-12-1: Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him

Pastor David McGee on Romans 2:1: The danger of self-righteous judgment, urging self-reflection, grace, and sharing Christ’s love.

Judge yourself

Roman 2:1NKJV

Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

In Romans chapter one, we learn about the unrighteousness of man. In chapter two, Paul addresses our self-righteousness; our desire to consider ourselves better than everybody else. Nobody wants to be called self-righteous, yet we quickly judge others. Friend, be aware of your weakness and sinfulness. If you think that once you became a Christian you stopped sinning, you should check out the passage below:

1 John 1:8-10NKJV

8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Judge yourself. If you look long at the sins of others and not enough at your own sins, you will develop spiritual pride, which is a stench to God. Have you ever looked at someone and thought there was no hope for them? Well, then, you are saying that God’s mercy is limited. You pridefully say that your sins are covered, but others are not.

Every person needs God’s saving power and grace, whether we deem them good people or not. Stop and think… How much have you been forgiven? Does this mean we cannot speak into others’ lives? We can and should, but not in condemnation. Just as God has heaped His grace so abundantly on you, in discernment, you can speak into someone’s life from your experiences with an attitude of love peppered with grace.

You cannot condemn someone and offer hope simultaneously. The moment we start to condemn people is the moment we forget our mission. What is our mission? Our mission is to tell people about Jesus Christ.

Life Lesson:

Seeing the evil in others does not root out the evil in you.

Dear God,

Thank You for forgiving me of my sins. I am so grateful for Your grace. Please forgive me for times when I, in my own pride, looked at someone else and condemned them in my mind. Please give me opportunities to tell people about Christ Jesus. Thank You Heavenly Father for in Jesus Christ mighty name I pray! Amen.

Hymn 674: Father, What Can To Thee Be Given

Father, what can to Thee be given

For all Thy mercies blest;

For riches of Thy glorious grace,

And for the bliss of rest?

2: My weary soul doth pant for Thee,

In dry and thorny land;

And in the howling wilderness

I find Thy guiding Hand.

3: Thou lovest me with love unknown,

When no one can console,

And, like the apple of Thine eyes,

Preservest Thou my soul.

4: Thou leadest me, and Thou alone,

In paths Thou knowest best;

I trust Thee when I cannot trace

The way to future rest.

5: Within Thy hand I place my own,

And thus my path pursue,

Content to walk with Thee alone,

Till glory fills my view.

When the Paschal evening fell: HYMN 689

1: When the Paschal evening fell

Deep on Kedron’s hallowed dell,

When around the festal board

Sate th’ Apostles with their Lord,

Then His parting word He said,

Bless’d the cup and brake the bread

“This when’er ye do and see,

Evermore remember me.”

2: Years have passed: in every clime,

Changing with the changing time,

Varying through a thousand forms,

Tom by factions, rocked by storms,

Still the sacred table spread,

Flowing cup and broken bread,

With that parting word agree,

“Drink and eat; remember Me.”

3: When by treason, doubt, unrest,

Sinks the soul dismayed, opprest;

When the shadows of the tomb

Close us round with deepening gloom

Then bethink us at that board

Of the sorrowing suffering Lord,

Who when tried and grieved as we

Dying said, “Remember me.”

4: When in this thanksgiving feast

We would give to God our best,

From the treasures of His might

Seeking life and love and light;

Then, O Friend of human kind,

Make us true and firm of mind,

Pure of heart, in spirit free;

Thus may we remember Thee.

Here, O my Lord, I see Thee face to face: Hymn 690

1: Here, O my Lord, I see Thee face to face;

Here would I touch and handle things unseen;

Here grasp with firmer hand th’etemal grace,

And all my weariness upon Thee lean.

2: Here would I feed upon the Bread of God;

Here drink with Thee the royal Wine of heaven;

Here would I lay aside each earthly load,

Here taste afresh, the calm of sin forgiven.

3: This is the hour of banquet and of song,

This is the heavenly table spread for me;

Here let me feast, and, feasting, still prolong

The brief, bright hour of fellowship with Thee.

4: Too soon we rise; the symbols disappear;

The feast, though not the love, is past and gone,

The bread and wine remove; but Thou art here,

Nearer than ever; still my Shield and Sun.

5: Mine is the sin, but Thine the righteousness;

Mine is the guilt, but Thine the cleansing blood;

Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace

Thy blood thy righteousness O Lord my God.

6: Feast after feast thus comes, and passes by;

Yet, passing, points to the glad Feast above,

Giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy,

The Lamb’s great Bridal Feast of bliss and love.

Divine Victory. Clarifying Misconceptions Christendom

TEXT: John 5:39

INTRODUCTION: John 5:39, as believers, we are admonished to ensure we search the scriptures; according to Charles Spurgeon; “The devil’s effective strategy is not to attack the church directly, but to infiltrate it with false teaching and corrupt practices…”, knowing this will help us contend more for our faith. This knowledge will guide us from becoming victims of misconceptions that can derail us from the path of truth. If these misconceptions are not addressed, it has the potential of becoming the truth, which will erode the ancient landmarks and lead many away from the faith. Teaching on misconceptions can be controversial, but the true church must be consistent by standing against it. Whatever is not prohibited is permitted!

As we continue in this series, may the Spirit of Christ guide us into all truth in Jesus name, Amen.

OUTLINE 1: WE WILL GET TO HEAVEN BASED ON HOW GOOD WE ARE ON EARTH: Eph. 2:8-9, 2 Tim 1:9, 1Tim.1:1, Titus 3:5, Romans 3:23, John 14:6, Acts 4:12, James 1:17, 2:17, Matt 7:16-20, 5:48, Heb 12:14

Salvation is by grace through faith and not by works, it is the gift of God so that none can boast. Christ saved us not because of good works done by us but according to his own mercy. We cannot get to Heaven based on the good works we have done. The Bible makes it clear; for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Jesus is the only way, the only truth and the only life to heaven. There is no salvation in no else and the only name under heaven given amongst men by which we must be saved. Good works are a result of salvation and evidence of genuine faith, not a means of salvation and passport to Heaven. A transformed life bears good works, for by their fruits you shall know them. God’s standard for Heaven is Holiness without which no man can see God.

KEY POINT: Romans 3:10, Isa 64:6b – None is righteous no not one, therefore, relying on good will fail.

OUTLINE 2: SHOULD A BELIEVER ALLOW HIS OR HER RELIGIOUS PRACTICES TO IMPART ADVERSELY ON PAID EMPLOYMENT:

COLLOSIANS 3:23-24, MATT 5:16, TITUS 2:9-10, Matt 6:33, Col. 3:23, Romans 12:18, Acts 5:29, 1Peter 2:12, 1 Tess.4:11-12, Phil. 4:5

The relationship between religious practices and employment can sometimes create conflict, and maintaining a balance requires tact and wisdom. The Bible provides principles to guide believers on how to resolve conflict without compromising their faith and professional responsibilities.

1. Prioritize God, be wise and respectful; your ultimate allegiance is to God, it does not mean disregarding work.

2. Work diligently as an act of worship and don’t give your employer a reason to criticize your faith

3. Avoid becoming a conduit for sin in the hands of your employers and above reproach (lying, defraud)

4. Be an example of integrity in work ethics so that our faith becomes attractive to our colleagues

5. Be diligent and don’t use faith as an excuse for poor performance

KEY POINT: James 1:5, Wisdom is profitable; however, be loyal to God, He remains faithful as a great rewarder.

OUTLINE 3: VIOLENT PRAYERS ARE ALWAYS ANSWERED: MATT 11:12, LUKE 18:1-8, 1 JOHN 5:14-15, Matt 11:7-11, 16-19, HEB. 11:6, PHIL 3:12-14, JUDE 1:1-3, ISA. 59:1, ROMANS 9:15-16, ECCL. 9:11, LUKE 11:1-5

What does violent prayer mean? This belief is one of the most debated practices, a very controversial and grave misconception that has eaten deep into Christendom due to the misunderstanding of Jesus’ reference to and praise of John the Baptist and wrongly interpreted that the louder you shout while praying, the faster God will answer your prayers. There are two sources of violence concerning the kingdom of God: from the world through persecution and from believers through Zeal (faith, teaching and perseverance).

Christ’s model of prayer is devoid of shouting but full of reference, worship and love. Our Father who hath in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come…

If shouting was required, the master would have instructed us to follow suit but admonished us not be like the Pharisees and Sadducees. The kingdom of God is not for the weak in heart but for the strong. It is mercy that speaks and covers the multitude of our iniquity. Shouting to God to answer us is a sign that we are far from Him. We do not shout at those we love!

KEY POINT: Ps 51: 17, Luke 18:10-14, A broken and a contrite heart is a gem to God

CONCLUSION: 2 Tim 2:15, Titus 3:8, Constant study of and meditation on the scriptures and obedience to instructions thereby will help us not to become victims of misconceptions.

The Merciful Father and His Two Lost Sons

Preacher: Pastor (Mrs) Morenike Obadina

Let’s go ahead and begin to worship Him, let’s go ahead and begin to magnify His holy name; Father we worship You this morning, Father we magnify Your holy name, Father we give You glory, we give You honor, we give You adoration; You are worthy to be worshiped, You are worthy to be magnified, You are worthy to be exalted, You are worthy to be lifted up, Father we worship You, You are a holy God, merciful Father, merciful God, merciful Daddy, we worship You, we bless Your name.

Thank You for who You are, thank You for what You do, thank You for Your mercy, thank You for Your goodness, thank You for Your benevolence, thank You for watching out for us, Father we thank You we worship You; thank You for life, thank You for health, thank You for family, thank You for relationship. Father we thank You that we are Your children and we can come before You and call You Father, Father thank You, thank You Jesus, glory be to Your name oh Lord, in Jesus mighty name we have worshipped.

Our Father and our God, we thank You this morning, Father we thank You because You are deserving of all worship, You are deserving of all adoration, You are deserving of all honor and we worship You this morning, be exalted oh Lord in the name of Jesus. And Father Lord, this morning even as we come before Your throne and Your word, we pray Lord that Your word will minister to us expressly this morning in the name of Jesus.

We want to talk about Your mercy that You are a merciful God, indeed You are a merciful God, this morning show us mercy in the name of Jesus. Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy upon us in the name of Jesus; in every area that we need Your mercy this morning, Father show us mercy, show our children mercy, show our work mercy, show our families mercy, show Nigeria mercy in the name of Jesus. Thank You Father, in Jesus name we have prayed.

Welcome to church, God bless you in Jesus name! I want to appreciate the Almighty God for this opportunity to stand before you this morning and I want to thank our father in the Lord, the APICR, for giving me this platform this morning, I pray that all of us will be blessed as we listen to the word of God in the name of Jesus.

So the topic this morning is “The Merciful Father and His Two Lost Sons”; many of us are familiar right from when we were young, when we were little in Sunday school about the story of The Prodigal Son, but this morning we are not only considering the prodigal son, we are looking at the two sons because there are two sons in that story and the Almighty God will make us to identify where we stand so that we can cry out for mercy this morning in the name of Jesus.

In fact, if you look at Luke 15: 1, Jesus Christ spoke about three parables in that chapter 15; the Parable of the Lost Sheep, the Parable of the Lost Coin and the Parable of the Lost Son, so there are three parables in Luke 15 that Jesus Christ spoke about, speaking about the same thing – the heart of the Father, the mercy of the Father, the song that we normally sing, the Ome mma song, the One who would leave the 99 and go and look for the one that is missing, that is the love and the heart of our Father God, praise the Lord!

I’m going to read quickly from Luke 15, is a very long passage but I’m going to read so that we can have proper understanding of the sermon of this morning; Luke 15: 11 – 32, “And he said, a certain man had two sons: 12And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that before that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. 13And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. 14And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat, and no man gave unto him. 17And when he came to himself, he said, how many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with Hunger! 18I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 19And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. 20And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. 22But the father said to his servants, bring forth the best robe, and put it on put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry, praise the Lord!

I will go to the second son in the course of the sermon, I will read the Bible passages concerning the second son shortly, so we want to first of all look at these two sons; the father in this passage is the merciful God, is our merciful God, and the two sons represent different attitudes towards grace and repentance. The younger son got lost by leaving home and wasting his inheritance while the older son got lost in his pride and his resentment even though he did not physically leave home, so we’re going to look at this younger son that we popularly refer to as a ‘Prodigal Son’.

So this younger son in this story wanted his inheritance early; he told his dad, daddy, I know you have land and you have cattle and you have sheep, divide the inheritance and give me my own share while the father was yet alive. What he’s saying in effect is I wish you are dead already, just share what belongs to me and let me be on my way, and you know in Jewish custom, the first born is entitled to 2/3 of the father’s estate while the younger son is entitled to the one third, so he was saying to the father, the one third that is due to me give it to me now, I don’t want you to give me when you are dead, I want it straight away.

And so you know in Jewish tradition at that time, is not like they have money, they are estates, their net worth consist of their land and their cattle and their livestock, that what was what they had at that time that made them wealthy, so this son was essentially saying go and sell the land, divide the land that you have, sell the land, divide all the animals you have and sell the one third and give me my share, that was what the boy said, in other words, he was telling the father I want you to have a first sale; you know people in economics tell us that when you have to sell something quickly, of course you sell it cheaper, you don’t get the full value of what it is; you know we lawyers always say we are learned, we know everything, that’s why we are learned.

So this boy, by telling the father share your inheritance right now, he broke the father’s heart, he was in rebellion, is like he should be dead now and some of us are like that and that is what people call the ‘entitlement mentality’, this is what I’m entitled to; some wish that their parents were dead so they can pounce on the inheritance quickly.

Few days ago I read in the newspapers, I think Nation (or so) that there was this man, this pensioner who received his (maybe some of us read it) pension entitlements and his graduate sons that he had trained when he was working and his wife he set up two shops for, and gave her three million to do business, then he bought a car for himself worth about 12 million; so the wife and the children were not happy that he bought something for himself, so they ganged up and beat him up and tied him like a a goat and called six aboki to tie him up like somebody to be slaughtered and they were packing all his goods, so it was neighbors in the neighborhood who heard him shouting that came to his rescue, in other words, what they are saying is we wish you are dead, just give us our inheritance. So this story is not about something that happened in the Bible times, it is also happening even today, may God deliver us in the name of Jesus.

So this younger son left home chasing freedom, ‘I want to be free’, he did not want to work in the farm, he did not want to work in the family business, he just wanted freedom at all cost and so some of us also are like that, we don’t want to submit to God, we don’t want to submit to man, we want to be free; some people say I want my destiny in my own hands but the destiny you put in your own hands that destiny will crash, may our destinies not crash in the name of Jesus.

So this young boy, the father heartbroken, had to sell what he worked for and gave him one third of his inheritance and this boy said now I have money, he went to a far place, he japa-ed to somewhere else and when he went to that place he did not invest the money, money that you did not work for you will spend it anyhow, so he began to live a riotous life; he called friends, prostitutes, he was drinking, making merry, money that he did not work for, and that is what happens these days, when you see fraudsters, Yahoo boys, the Hushpuppies of this world when they get this easy money, of course easy money comes easy money goes, so they will waste all the money and look for the next person to dupe, that is what is happening.

I read some time ago, I think it was during the December, the one they call ‘detty December’, December when everybody came to Nigeria, they said some people will go to these lounges and clubs, they can spend millions in one night to drink and to carry women, you can see that that kind of lifestyle is a wasteful riotous lifestyle and that was what this boy was interested in, so you that you are looking for money, you want this you want that, what is the purpose of what you want, is it to spend it on your own lust or you want to use money to advance yourself, advance your generation? The Bible tells us in Proverbs 23:5 that money can develop wings and fly away, so money that you don’t invest that money will fly away very soon.

So the money of this boy, the inheritance, flew away and he ended up broke; he was hungry, he was feeding from swine, (swine is pigs), and according to Jewish tradition the Jews don’t eat pigs just like Muslims, they don’t eat pigs; so this boy was forced in such a state that he had to be eating and struggling for food with pigs, and the Bible tells us that nobody gave anything to him, his heaven was closed, there was no favor, nobody gave him anything, all the people that he gave the money to nobody gave something to him when he was in need and that shows us that when we go away from God, when we want to be independent of God because we say that this father we are talking about in this story is Almighty God, so when we want to live life on our own terms, when we want to say Your rules are too many, ‘don’t do this, do this’, they are too much, I want to be free, I want to live my life the way I want to live, the Bible says that kind of person, he that is often reproved and hardened his heart shall suddenly be destroyed and without remedy, may we not be destroyed in the name of Jesus.

So when this boy began to be in want and he was eating with pigs, the Bible tells us that one day, (that is in verse 17) he came to himself, what is the meaning of coming to oneself? It means that you now begin to think, you do a self-examination, ‘how did I get here, what happened to me’, he started to remember his father – his father’s love, his father’s house, the care; they never mention the mother in this story, you can imagine how the mother’s heart will be broken in this story and so he came to himself, he had a self-examination, and some of us need to have a self-examination this morning, where am I now, what happened to me, what kind of life am I living, do I need to retrace my steps? Some of us need to do a self-examination.

So he came to himself when he reached ground zero; it’s like he woke up from a deep sleep and he saw the condition that he was in and he remembered from where he fell and he decided to retrace his steps; deciding to retrace his steps means he repented, there was a repentance, he was sorry for what he did, he was sorry for the life that he was living, praise the Lord!

We can see that in verse 18 and 19 he was sorry, he acknowledged his sin, he says I will arise and I will go to my father, I’m going to repent, I’m going to say father I’m sorry, I have sinned against heaven, I’ve sinned against you, I’m sorry.

Some of us need to come to that place of repentance this morning because the life that we are living now is a riotous living life, what are we doing, we have left the love of the Father, the Father is God who has given us everything, He has given us life, He gave us His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die for us on the cross of Calvary; He that has the Son has life, not only life, He has given us life more abundantly but we have told the Father ‘I don’t have time for You, I want my own life, I want to live my own life on my own terms’, but this boy came to himself and said I’m going to go back to my father, my father’s arms are still wide open, let me go back and ask for forgiveness. Some of us need to go back this morning and ask for mercy, as we go back the Lord will receive us back in the name of Jesus.

You can see the heart of the father in verse 20, he arose, he made a decision to go back, he did not only make that decision, he took action by going back; some people can feel sorrowful, ah, I wish I can stop this sin, I wish I’m not doing this hook up again, I’m going to change, I don’t want to do it again but they never take action, but this boy realized his situation and he arose and went to his father and you can see that the father was yearning for him, the father was missing him, the father was praying for him, the father was longing for the son that had gone astray because when he was still far away the father saw him, is that not my son coming? The love of the father was evident in this passage, his father saw him and had compassion and you can see an old man whose son took away his inheritance, the son was not the one running, it was a father that was running to meet the son, let’s clap for our Father.

The father ran, he fell on the neck of his son and the father kissed him, you can see the love of the Father; that song has just been ministering to me, that Ome mma song, it says He will leave the 99, that one soul that is lost, the Father can do anything to bring that lost soul back to Himself; so the father ran and kissed the son; and in verse 21, what did the father also do? The son repented and the father called the servant, this my son, change his clothes, this filthy clothes; when you come back to God, the Lord God Almighty will clean you up, He will clean the filth, He will he will accept us back as His children.

So the father removed the dirty clothes and gave him a ring, the ring means authority, meaning, this boy, even though he left but is back, he’s my son, so you have to respect him as my son, every benefit of son-ship belongs to this boy, praise the Lord! And then what happened, the father now said go and kill one big cow, we want to have a barbecue, and call musicians, we want to celebrate because this my son was dead and now is alive, you can see the love, let us clap for our Father.

So you can see in this story the mercy of God; the mercy of God reaches out to us irrespective of the sin that we have committed, no matter the gravity of the sin we have committed, once we repent, once we come back, God is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness, He’s only waiting for us to come, to make a move, it’s just a move that we need to make, He is the One that will run to us and He’s running to us this morning by this message, He’s telling us come home, you that you are weary, My son that you are lost, My daughter you are lost in the world, you are lost in sin, you are lost in unrighteousness, you are lost doing all these things that will take you to hell fire but I don’t want you to go to hell, I did not prepare hell for you, hell is prepared for Satan and his demons but you are My son, you are My daughter, heaven is your place, come back home, that is the love of the Father and He’s reaching out to somebody in this audience this morning, He’s telling you stop running, there is no help where you are running to, all those lifestyles is not going to help you, I am your Father and I’m calling you come back home, may we hear this morning and return onto our Father in the name of Jesus.

I titled this ‘Enter the Older Brother’; you know I said the two brothers are lost, so we’ll look at the older brother in Luke 15: 25-32, “Now his elder brother was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27And he said unto him, thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

28And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore (this same father went to meet him) came his father out, and intreated him. 29And he answering said to his father, lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I may make merry with my friends: 30But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. 32It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found”, praise the Lord!

So why do we say this elder brother was also lost? This elder brother was angry and self-righteous, he did not rejoice that his brother who was lost had come back and some of us are like that, when we see somebody that we have judged was a very terrible sinner and that person has made peace with God and is doing well and we begin to judge, this person, ah I know this person in school, this one na real olosho when we were in school but that person has moved on, that person has received mercy, and so you are self-righteous, why should good things come to those kind of people, those people who were very terrible, me I’ve been righteous, I’m SU, from school I’ve been SU so why should they get things and I am not getting them, why should that olosho now get married, have children and me that I was SU from school nothing has happened in my life and you are angry with God, that is self-righteousness, that is also a lost son, may God deliver us from that spirit in Jesus name.

So this older brother is saying to his father, I’ve been obedient, I follow all your rules and I’ve not been appreciated, I’ve not been rewarded, why is that so that I’ve not been rewarded for being good? This also shows that he had a spirit of pride in self efforts and self achievement. So this older brother, he never left home but his heart was also distant from the father, he was expecting to be rewarded for being good and that is why some of us we tell God, I pay my tithe, I fast, so I deserve – we tell God what we deserve, we don’t ask for His mercy and the Bible tells us that He shows mercy unto whom He will show mercy; He will show compassion unto whom He will show compassion, so we cannot go to God and tell Him the reason why you must bless me, if you don’t bless me then this Christianity is a scam.

Some people say na scam church na scam, why are they saying so? They are saying so because they are looking for a transactional God, is a transaction, so I come to church, I sing, I dance. I pay tithe, I fast, then I expect a reward, I expect to be paid back, so that is not the kind of God that we serve God, God is a God of relationship, so God wants us to have a relationship with Him. This elder son did not look at the relationship that this is my father, everything he owns belongs to me, I should thank him, I should be grateful that he’s even rejoicing because his younger son is back, but this older son said no, what is due to me is that I should be reverenced, I should be celebrated, I should be acknowledged because I’ve been the good boy, the Lord will show us mercy in the name of Jesus, I say God will show the older brothers among us, including myself mercy in the name of Jesus.

So this older brother did not see the need for mercy and grace, the father had to remind him, the father also, like I said before was the one that went to him when he refused to join the party, he refused to come in, the father looked around, where is my older son, the father went to look for him, he went to engage him that why are you angry, why aren’t you happy that this your brother that was lost is back home, you should also rejoice, you are with me you should rejoice that everything that I own belongs to you, which is a relationship.

So God is calling us to relationship, He’s not calling us to a transactional relationship, that’s because I come to church, because I do this then I deserve this, that is not the heart of the Father, and this morning, as many of us who have that kind of heart, the heart of the older son, the Father is also reaching out to us this morning and what is the Father telling the older sons among us this morning, He’s telling us have a relationship with me, when you have relationship with me, everything you are looking for will be handed over to you, everything I have belongs to you, you don’t need to struggle, you don’t need to quote for Me, you don’t need to remind Me what you have done for me, I see what you have done, I see you are doing it out of love, you are not doing everything you are doing out of a bargain that because I do it then I will expect a reward; everything we do for God, whether we are singing, whether we are preaching, whether we are fasting, whether we are tithing, whatever we are doing for God let us do it out of love and that love that we do it from, He responds to love, the Father will respond to love and He will do for us much more exceedingly abundantly and above all that we are even asking of Him, let’s clap for Jesus.

Jeremiah 9: 24, but he let him that glorieth glory in one thing, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord. So if you want to glory in anything, let us glory in the fact that we know God, that we have a relationship with Him, that we love God and that God loves us; we should glory in the fact that our names are written in His Book of Life, that is what we should glory in, so don’t let self-righteousness blind you to God’s grace for yourself and for others.

Like I said, some people don’t celebrate other people’s victories and blessings, they become envious and angry, thinking they deserve what that other person has because in their own estimation, they are more righteous than the other person, so why should this person have this when I’m more righteous than him, not knowing the Bible tells us that our own righteousness are like filthy rags, we are not righteous outside of Christ, He’s the One that gives us righteousness and so when God decide to show mercy to somebody we should not become angry with God to say why should that person be blessed and not me, and that seed, that seed of bitterness, that seed of anger, that seed of envy, it breeds other terrible feelings and terrible devices, may God show us mercy this morning in the name of Jesus.

So the younger brother was not looking for anything material, he just wanted to come back home, he wanted his father’s love, he wanted his father’s presence; the older brother wanted things, he wanted recognition and the father showed both of them mercy, he met both of them at their point; you, my son that was lost, welcome back home; you that you’re my son that is home but your heart is lost, also welcome back home, the Lord will show us mercy this morning in the name of Jesus.

So whether you are the rebellious younger son or you are the resentful older brother, the Lord is inviting you to come into His warm embrace; the father showed mercy to both of them, the father embraced both of them; this morning as we rise up on our feet, we are going to take this song and then I’m going to make an altar call, the first altar call I’m going to make is for the younger son, the one who is lost, the one who left the Father, the one who is still living in sin, the one who is still living in unrighteousness, and the second call is for us to do a self-examination, where am I standing as a son, am I having a transactional relationship with God or do I love the Father? Let us rise up.

Say after me; I am loved, I am loved unconditionally just like the father love both sons, God’s love to me is not based on what I have done or what I have not done, it is not something I earned or something I worked for, the Father’s arm is stretched out to me this morning and is calling me home. Pray for yourself now, say Father, thank You for Your unconditional love, thank You for Your love, thank You for Your mercy, it’s not based on what I’ve done or what I have not done but because You’re a merciful God, Father I’m coming back home this morning in the name of Jesus.

[Altar Call]

Our Father and our God, we thank You; merciful Father, we thank You, we thank You for Your love, the love that leaves the  99 and goes looking for one; thank You because it is because You love us that You are always looking out for us and You want our relationship with You to be a relationship of love. Father we pray this morning, as many whose hearts have strayed away from You, bring them back home, bring us back home, bring us back to relationship – a Father daughter, Father son relationship, a relationship of love in the name of Jesus; thank You our Father and our God, in Jesus name we have prayed.

Disobedience Leads To Sin and Death

TEXT: Romans 5:19 and 1 Corinthians 15:22

INTRODUCTION

Last week, we continued with the series on OBEDIENCE by studying: Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice. Today, we shall focus on the fact that disobedience leads to sin and death. Obedience has been severally defined since we commenced the series as compliance with an order, request, or law especially in deference to a higher authority. We learnt about the rewards that follow complete obedience; while being reminded that partial obedience is no obedience.

May we receive that grace to be fully obedient in all things in Jesus’ name, Amen!

OUTLINE 1: DISOBEDIENCE LEADS TO SIN

Disobedience in this instance means partial obedience or complete turn away from God’s ways/directives. Some instances:

  • Impatience leads to disobedience.

King Saul in 1 Sam 13:10-12 offered burnt offering that was to be performed by Samuel. One of the virtues of the fruit of the spirit is longsuffering [patience]. Gal 5:22.

  • Disobedience can lead to loss of authority/position.

King Saul feared the people, was stubborn and disobeyed Gods’ directives. 1 Samuel 15:22-24 & 26. No amount of our sacrifice can atone for disobedience; as Jesus Christ had made the ultimate sacrifice for us, Hebrews 10:10. Obedience is better than sacrifice.

  • Disobedience triggers the wrath of God.

In Joshua 6:17-19; God gave instruction that in Jericho; only Rehab the harlot and her family should be spared. But in Joshua 7:1, Achan took the accursed thing. This led to defeat of Israel by Ai. Thirty-six [36] men were killed because of God’s wrath. Also, in our text: Romans 5:19, the disobedience of Adam & Eve triggered the entrance of sin.

  • You reap what you sowed.

Gal 6:7-8 is apt. Partaking in the holy communion unworthily is an act of disobedience. 1 Corinthians 11:27-30. Verse 30 harps on spiritual death.

OUTLINE 2: DISOBEDIENCE LEADS TO DEATH

Death in this instance refers to spiritual and, in some cases, physical. Spiritual death is being alienated from the life of God [Romans 6:23]. Consider the following:

  • The case of Adam and Eve

Gen 2:16-17. God’s instructions to Adam were clear and straightforward. Both disobeyed and realized they were naked; a sign of spiritual deadness, Gen 3:6-7. As in Adam all die …. 1 Corinthians 15:22.

  • Is your spiritual garment in place?

Rev 16:15 enjoins us to watch [be vigilant/avoid disobedience]  and keep our garment, otherwise we walk naked and subjected to shame. A word of advice in Luke 21:36.

  • There is an escape route from spiritual death.

John 3:16 is an escape route from spiritual death. If we obey, there is the assurance of everlasting life. John 8:51 is a reassurance that if we obey, we can never see spiritual death.

OUTLINE 3: DISOBEDIENCE THAT LED TO SIN, SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL DEATH

  • 1 Kings 13:1-26. A classical case of what we learnt today. Disobedience leads to sin,

spiritual death, and even physical death.

CONCLUSION

The consequences of disobedience are too grievous to be ignored. Let us watch and pray that we will not be led into temptation [Matthew 6:13]. May the Lord release unto us the grace to flee from all appearance of evil [1 Thess 5:22].
