This is a story that a good friend told me, recently.

According to her, she met the woman at an airport overseas, while they were waiting for their luggage. She was happy to see a fellow Lagos-based in a far away land and they quickly exchanged contact details. She even left her hand luggage with the other lady as she headed to claim their luggage, having collected the other lady’s luggage-tag.

Afterwards, they promised to see catch up in town. Although, both women were there for business.

Her nightmare only began when she got to her destination (a hotel) and it was time to pay the Taxi fare.

She turned her hand bag upside down but her purse was missing. And in that purse was her international passport (she was to travel to the US from there) and the sum of seven thousand dollars.

She told me that her hands kept going up in the air in desperation and anguish but the taxi driver (who neither spoke nor understood English language) was having none of that and was already releasing aggressive words on her.

Luckily for her, the five hundred dollars (last minute arrangement) that someone gave her at the airport back home to help her buy something fell down from the inner pocket of her of hand bag and that was what she changed to the local currency, to be able to get the driver (who had already started pouring expletives on her) off her back.

She then turned to the hotel staff (who were very sympathetic) and relayed the issue to them. And it was them that advised her to go back to the airport and report the incident to the airport authorities.

She did as advised and only had to sit back to marvel at the wonder of technology.  But before then, she had placed a call to her new friend and the woman’s line was unreachable.

 She wanted to share her nightmare with someone!

The airport authorities began by replaying the closed-circuit television (CCTV) right from when they disembarked from the plane and walked to baggage-claim.

The CCTV (now zoomed from various angles) showed when she brought out that purse to take her tags and put it back in the bag…unzipped.

The shock was when her new friend threw a few glances around before putting that same purse in her own hand bag.

Now armed with the information they were looking for, she was asked if she has the lady’s contact details and she nodded.

It turned out that the phone number was fake!

She told me that she should have known that something was not adding up when she dialed that same number immediately the woman called it out and it didn’t go through, yet same woman had used the airport Wi-fi to make calls from her phone earlier.

The CCTV also captured the Taxi that drove her new friend out of the airport.

Calls were made and within minutes, the Taxi driver told them where he dropped that particular passenger.

By now, the police had taken over the matter,  about four of them (three females and a male) were involved.

At the hotel where the other lady lodged, the police kept out of sight and got the hotel staff to knock on the door. They did as instructed and the police swooped in as soon as she opened the door.

On the bed was my friend’s purse, international passport and the money…spread like it had just been counted.

That lady was led out of that hotel room in handcuffs.

Further details given about the matter, were…

The other lady’s husband was contacted. He did not believe it.

His words were “my wife is a Pastor. She cannot do such a thing.’’

“What do I tell the children” were the next words he was heard saying.

My friend also said that even though the woman begged profusely for her forgiveness, that country’s police made it clear that it was no longer in her powers to decide the outcome of the case and that was when she realized that those people are very unforgiving of exported criminality.

This is the thing about demon of the self that we are often in denial of.

 If you don’t seek help and actively confront them, the monster will keep rearing its ugly head where it will cause you maximum damage.

Character flaws like paedophilia, nymphomania, kleptomania etc, are all demons of the self that should not be swept under the carpet.

You can NOT even pray away a reality that you are not willing to work on with all sincerity.

The mistake is thinking you will always get away with demons of the self. They are too grave to not give you the damage or humiliation of a life time!
