Daniel’s Devotion

God Deserves Our Thanks…  Always!

“When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.” (Daniel 6:10)

Daniel is one of my favorite characters in the Bible. Since his youth, he was an example of devotion and obedience to God amidst his circumstances. Even when faced with threats of death, he remained faithful and gave thanks to God.

During king Darius’ reign, Daniel was placed as one of three high officials that were placed throughout the kingdom. Some folks became jealous of Daniel and tried to find fault in him to accuse him before the king. When they were unable to find error in him, they decided to try and attack his faith. They tricked the king into establishing a law where petitions could not be made to any god or man besides the king. The jealous officials did this because they knew of Daniel’s close relationship with God and his faithfulness to Him. When Daniel heard of this, he could have become angry and accused God of injustice, but instead, he went home and did what he always did… he prayed and gave thanks to God.

It would be interesting to know what Daniel thanked God for that day. Was it for His constant provision? His faithfulness in every circumstance? His friendship and the fact that he was never alone? Every bit of this was true even if God had chosen not to rescue Daniel from the lion’s den after having chosen to obey God over the king’s decree. Daniel chose to express gratitude and remain faithful regardless of what happened to him, and God protected him.

The God of Daniel is the same God we worship and serve today! His faithfulness, goodness, protection, provision, and friendship has not changed. Choose to put God above all else, express your gratitude to God daily for who He is, and remain faithful to His calling in your life.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for who you are and all you have done. You are my God, my protector, my provider, and my friend. I love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Hymn 38. What Shall I Render To My God

John_14-1: Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me
John_14-1: Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me

1:

What shall I render to my God,

For all His mercy’s store?

I’ll take the gifts He hath bestowed,

And humbly ask for more.

2:

The sacred cup of saving grace

I will with thanks receive

And all His promises embrace,

And to His glory live.

3:

My vows I will to His great name

Before His people pay;

And all have, and all I am,

Upon His alter lay.

4:

Thy lawful servant, Lord, I owe

To Thee whate’er is mine

Born in Thy family below

And by redemption Thine

5:

Thy hands created me, Thy hands

From sin have set me free

The mercy that hath loosed my bands

Hath bound me fast to Thee.

6:

The God of all-redeeming grace

My God I will proclaim,

Offer the sacrifice of praise,

And call upon His name

7:

Praise Him ye saints, the God of love

Who hath my sins forgiven

Till gathered to the church above

We sing the songs of heaven.

Thank You Jesus,

Seek First

Matthew_6-33: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matthew_6-33: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

All these things!

“After all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:32-33)

Notice how many times in this passage that Jesus said “All These Things

England’s Queen Elizabeth I once asked a British to undertake a mission for the crown. “But your Highness,” said the man, “such a long absence will be fatal to my business.” To which the queen replied: “You take care of my business, and I will take care of yours.” When the man returned, he found that the queen’s patronage had enlarged his company immeasurably.

Alice Taylor was a missionary to China whose four children were captured by the Japanese and interned in a concentration camp during World War II. Alice suffered galloping anxiety. But she recalled her pastor once putting Matthew 6:33 like this: “If you take care of the things that are dear to God, He will take care of the things that are dear to you.”

That’s powerful.  “If you take care of the things that are dear to God, He will take care of the things that are dear to you.”

Alice forced herself to focus on the Lords work while trusting Him with her cares. In time her children came home safely to the glory of God.

What’s our greatest need today? Whatever it is – financial, relational, physical, or emotional – it’s included in that universal “all these things”.

Jesus said, “All these things…

        “All these things…”

        “All these things…”

Right Hand of God

Isaiah_64-8: But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand
Isaiah_64-8: But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand

The Hand

“Your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.” (Psalms 139:10)

Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment – to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.

Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her student’s art. And they were.

But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of misery – frail and unhappy. As other children played at recess, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.

Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.

His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and care for people. Still others guessed it was the hand of God, for God feeds us. And so the discussion went – until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.

When the children had gone on to other assignments, she paused at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and murmured, “It’s yours, teacher.”

She recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students.  How often had she said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.”  Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.”  Or, “Let’s do this together.”  Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.   Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work.

The story speaks of more than thankfulness. It says something about teachers teaching and parents parenting and friends showing friendship, and how much it means to the “Douglases” of the world.  They might not always say thanks; but they will remember the hand that reaches out.

“I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.”  (Psalms 73:23)

Hymn 36. To God Be Glory, Great Things He Hath Done

Psalms_113-3: From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD'S name is to be praised
Psalms_113-3: From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’S name is to be praised

1:

To God be glory, great things He hath done,

So loved He the world that He gave us His son,

Who yielded His life an atonement for sin

And open’d the life gate that all may go in.

CHORUS:

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord Praise the Lord!

Let the people rejoice!

O Come to the father, through Jesus the Son;

And give Him the glory! great things He hath done!

2:

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,

To every believer the promise of God;

The vilest offender who truly believes

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

3:

Great things he hath taught us great things He hath done,

And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;

But purer, and higher, and greater will be

Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see

Someone Is Always Watching

Matthew_5-16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven
Matthew_5-16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:18)

Even when we don’t think they are, they are. Even when we don’t see them, their eyes are upon us. Even when we don’t pay any attention, they do. Somebody’s always watching. I got an ugly reminder of that earlier today.

We pulled into the Hampton Inn to grab a room for the night and there was one other vehicle under the registration awning as we arrived. The vehicle immediately got our attention because it had license plates that read GOSPEL. The familiar “fish” was plastered near the back bumper. And there were other Christian messages adorning the front of the vehicle as well. We knew these must be some of the brethren.

And then, it happened…

They locked their keys in the car. Apparently, it was the wife’s fault, judging from the tantrum and explosive words the husband began throwing at her. Unaware that we had pulled up behind them, unaware that anyone was watching, unaware that someone who had observed all their Christian decorations had their eyes locked on them, and unaware that their testimony for Christ was on open view.

This man began throwing an old-fashioned fit. Ranting and raving, hurling abusive accusations, just generally being very ugly to his wife. All because they were going to have to call AAA to get their keys out of their locked vehicle. Only God knows what would have happened if it had been a real crisis!

The point I want to make is this: you and I wear the Name of Christ. Whether or not we have a license plate that bears it or we wear a cross or a WWJD bracelet or Christian t-shirt, or whether or not we adorn the traditional fish symbol, we wear the Name of Christ 24/7.

That’s not to say that we are going to be perfect, because we’re not. It is to say that somebody’s always watching. Even when we don’t see them. Even when we don’t know they are there. Even when we aren’t paying any attention. Someone is always watching.

And it’s important that we “let our lights shine” for Christ as best we can. It’s important that we remember that our words and actions represent Him. It’s important that we remember Christianity isn’t something we put on for Sundays when we’re at church and we take off during the remainder of the week.

If we belong to Christ, then we ought to live for Him.

Today someone might pull up behind you. You may not see them, but they’ll see you. You may not notice them, but they’ll notice you. You may not be paying any attention to them at all, but I assure you, they will be paying attention to you.

What will they see? Will they see YOU or will they see CHRIST THROUGH YOU? Will they see the flesh working or the Spirit at work?

Today, let us all make an extra effort to be like Jesus. And let’s let our lights shine to the glory of God for all to see. Because I can guarantee you. Somebody’s always watching.

Have a “Wonderful DAY in Christ.”

The Secret of Happiness

Nehemiah_8-10: Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength
Nehemiah_8-10: Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Christopher Parkening is regarded as the world’s greatest classical guitarist. He has played guitar with orchestras around the world and has even played for several presidents in the White House. In addition to being a great musician, he is also a world-class fly-fishing champion.

By his own testimony, he writes, “By age 30, I’d achieved all my dreams in the musical world, but I was tired of hotel rooms, performances and recording sessions. It was time to go fishing, so with the money I had earned, I found my dream stream on a ranch in Montana. I bought the ranch, called my management group at Colombia, and told them I had no desire to play anymore. I had earned enough money that I didn’t need to work anyway.

“For several years, I did what I wanted, but as time went by, my life became emptier. I found out that when you have everything you thought would make you happy, and it doesn’t– you start asking questions like: What’s missing?

“While in California visiting friends, I attended a church where I heard a sermon entitled, “Examine yourself whether you are in the faith.” The preacher said that you could know all about Christ, the Bible, even pray to God, and Jesus could still say, ‘Depart from me, you worker of iniquity, I never knew you.’ I was convinced if I had died that night, Jesus would have spoken those words to me.

“So, I walked down the aisle, surrendered my life to Christ, and was baptized. I read the Bible when I was a kid, but I never wanted a Lord to obey unconditionally. I went home that day broken over my selfish ways.

“That night, I couldn’t sleep, so I got up and started reading the Bible. Soon I came across 1 Corinthians 10:31 that said, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” I realized there were only two things I knew how to do: fly fish and play guitar. I am playing the guitar today for God’s glory, and that’s what I tell my students at Pepperdine, where I teach. I now have peace and joy unspeakable that I never had before. My life has purpose and I’ve learned the true secret of genuine happiness!”

Happiness is not about what we possess, but rather what we give. The gifts God has given us are not meant only to bring us satisfaction, but rather to be a blessing to others. When we share what God has given us and seek to bring him glory, we are fulfilling His purpose for our lives, and this produces true happiness.

Suggested prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the gifts you have blessed me with. Whether they are in the form of talents or material possessions, I ask that you show me ways to bless others with them, and in doing so, bring honor and glory to you. My desire is to fulfill Your purpose for me and find true happiness that comes from you.

Starting the New Year in Freedom

Sunday Family Prayer Points: Declaring Divine Authority and Freedom from Sorrow
Sunday Family Prayer Points: Declaring Divine Authority and Freedom from Sorrow

“His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. ‘We are your slaves,’ they said. But Joseph said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.'” (Genesis 50:18-20)

If you were to reflect on the past year, I am sure that some may be reminded of hurt feelings. Perhaps some of us are dragging these feelings into the New Year. While it may be easier to ignore those feelings, if not dealt with, these feelings can produce bitterness and anger in us. It is hard to practice gratitude with these feelings in our hearts. Instead of trying to sweep these issues under the rug, we can choose to enter the New Year with the freedom of forgiveness.

In order to truly forgive, we must surrender it all to God. This can be difficult because we typically associate the word surrender with defeat or losing the battle. But when our hurts are surrendered to God, this is when he lifts the weight off our shoulders and handle’s the situation as he sees fit. Our healing begins when we come in total surrender to God. He covers us in His love, mercy, and fills us with His peace. Our human nature may want revenge on those who have hurt us, but when we surrender to God, we can trust that he will take care of it. Romans 12:19 says, “Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God… ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back’, says the Lord.”

The story of Joseph is a perfect example of this. When he saw his brothers before him that day, I am sure that all those feelings of hurt came back for all they had done to him. He had suffered greatly because of their jealousy. But he acknowledged God’s control over everything and realized how God had used the hurt to accomplish His plans for Joseph. In the same way, God can take our pain and use it for good when we surrender it all to Him.

Friends don’t take offenses and hurts from last year into the New Year. If we want to have peace, we need to surrender our hurt feelings over to God. We need to relinquish control. If there is someone you need to forgive, take it to God in prayer right now, leave it in His hands, choose to forgive, and trust Him with the results. Forgiveness is not about the other person, but about us and the freedom we can enjoy in Christ.

Suggested prayer: Lord, I surrender my feelings and those who have hurt me to You. Please heal my heart and help me forgive where necessary. I trust You and know that You have complete control over my life and all that happens in it. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Just Part of the Job

Job_22-21: Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
Job_22-21: Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

A resourceful doctor in rural Australia saved a boy’s life with a handyman’s power drill.  Hailed as a hero when the story broke globally years ago, he reacted modestly. “It was not a personal achievement,” he said. “It is just a part of the job, and I had a very good team of people helping me.”

Dr. Rob Carson diagnosed a 12-year-old boy brought to a small hospital’s emergency room with a soon-to-be-fatal brain bleed. Nicholas Rossi had been riding his bike and took a fall. His mother, a nurse, realized the bump on his head could be serious and insisted on taking him to the hospital. By the time they arrived, Nicholas was already slipping in and out of consciousness.

Dr. Carson made the correct call on what was happening and knew he had a very short time to take decisive action. He made two decisions.  First, he sent to the maintenance room for a drill, because the rural hospital didn’t have sophisticated neurosurgical tools. Second, he called a neurosurgeon in Melbourne to ask help with his dilemma.

With an ordinary household drill in hand, he followed the specialist’s guidance through a procedure that worked flawlessly. “General practitioners in country towns do procedures all the time,” said Dr. Carson. But a father’s reaction to that modest take on what happened was very different. “He saved our son’s life!” declared Michael Rossi.

People took what was at hand and put it into God’s hands!

Some of us would do well to follow the good doctor’s example and learn to be a bit more clever, gutsy, and inventive in our lives. Are you a sales person who sits for long periods waiting to see clients? Keep a Bible or a Christian book with you to read instead of old magazines. Are you a commuter? Listen to a Christian podcast as an alternative.

Has the tough economy challenged your company’s customary client base?  Has illness altered the way your family functions? Has the community around your church changed radically over the past few years? Every challenge is a disguised opportunity for creative adaptation and productive learning.

Gideon used clay jars and trumpets to rout an army. Samson used the jawbone from a donkey’s carcass to defeat his enemies. Jesus used a little boy’s sack lunch of bread and dried fish to feed thousands. In these biblical episodes, people took was at hand and put it into God’s hands — with amazing outcomes.

Creativity often comes not from seeing the light but from feeling the heat. Maybe it will be that way with the challenge you are facing today. Your task is not to guarantee outcomes with certainty but to address problems with courage.

Are You Adopted?

Romans_12-1: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service
Romans_12-1: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service

“And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son; and she named him Moses, for she said, “Because I drew him out of the water.” (Exodus 2:10)

I have a cousin who is adopted. While I have always regarded her in the same way I do any of my other blood relatives, she revealed to me that there was a period in her life she felt like she didn’t really belong because she was not born into her family. When she would express these feelings to me, I would always remind her that her adoptive parents choosing her above all other children was proof that she was a very much wanted and loved child.

The word “adoption” is derived from its Latin meaning: option. When we have an option, we have a choice. In this case, there is the choosing of another person’s child as one’s own.

As we can see from the above Bible verse, the concept of adoption is ancient. However, just as there is earthly adoption, so too is there a spiritual adoption.

Those of us who repent of our sins partake of God’s offer of eternal life and allow ourselves to be born again by the renewing of our spirits, are now children of God.   “But to all who received Him, who believed in His Name, He gave power to become children of God” (John 1:12)

God is our Father, and we are His children. We have become heirs of Jesus Christ, and share the bloodline of the Most High.  “You have received the spirit of son-ship. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is the Spirit Himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him” (Romans 8:15-17)

Although I am not adopted, there was a time when I was a young adult that I too felt disunity with my natural parents. There were moments when I too felt alone, and that there was no one that I could really talk to. My comfort, however, was found in my relationship with God. Whenever I felt low, I would remind myself of who I was. When you are a son or daughter of the Most High, and whose love is so rich, and family so vast, it is impossible to feel down for long.

If you are not yet a child of God, please know that our Heavenly Father is just waiting for you to come to Him. His love for you is already there, but the choice to grab hold of His outstretched hand must be yours, for God would never force His love on an unwilling heart.

Come, and be adopted into the body of Christ!

Above All – With All

Ephesians_4-6: One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all
Ephesians_4-6: One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all

“Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.” (1 Sam 12:24 KJV)

“Above all, fear the Lord and worship Him faithfully with all your heart, considering the great things He has done for you. (1 Samuel 12:24 HCSB)

“Above All – With All”

What a slogan for life!  This verse comes at the close of one of the greatest speeches in recorded history, the farewell message of Samuel, who was bowing out after a lifetime as Israel’s leader. His farewell address is the whole of 1 Samuel 12, and at one point he even called down thunder and rain from heaven – talk about visuals! – warning the people that everything depended on their serving God with “all their hearts”.

Someone once said that “partial obedience is total disobedience”. Too many of us have an unspoken idea that the stresses of life justify a little fudging of the rules. Life is hard, so we deserve a break – a little sinning here and there provides relief from the pressures we bear.

But little sins can cause big problems. After all, germs are little things, yet deadly. A spark is a little thing, but it can consume a forest. The Bible warns about the little foxes that spoil the vines, and Paul wrote that a little yeast leavens the whole lump.

On the other hand, obedience in little things is a big thing!!!

Is there a little sin in your heart that needs to be confessed and corrected? Some seemingly small area of obedience that should be embraced? “Above all, fear the Lord and worship Him faithfully with all your heart, considering the great things He has done for you.”

Waiting Patiently

James_1-3: Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience
James_1-3: Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience

“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.” (Psalm 37:7a)

The tree is trimmed, adorned with a star atop; the halls are decked with lights and colored bows. Carols play and the sweet smells of cinnamon and pine fill the air. If your home is blessed with small children, the wait for Christmas Day is full of anticipation, and that waiting time can become excruciating as their innocent impatience grows thin. We hear ourselves repeating, “not yet”, or even redirecting their focus to other activities that can be just as fulfilling. We adults can relate because we’ve all had to practice patience at some point. Have you heard the saying, “Patience is a Virtue”? It’s not just a saying; it’s listed as a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22).

Sometimes God wants to help us build up our patience.  Increased patience builds our character and makes us more like Jesus. Christmas, the celebration of the birth of our Savior, is a perfect time to strive to be more like Jesus!

God desires that we learn to trust Him. He wants us to lean on him completely. The more we trust His wisdom and His plan the quicker we are to settle into the “not yet” moments. Just as that little child at Christmas knows that great things are to come, believe that God has great things in store for you.

Waiting for anything can bring uncertainty. Impatiently waiting for God to answer a prayer or plea robs us of the joy of seeking Him in the “waiting process”. We miss out on the beauty of the decorations and the cheerful atmosphere when we allow our impatience to rule our day. Instead, turn your waiting over to God. Set your sight on God’s kingdom first (Mat. 6:33) and the wondrous gifts He has in store for you. God will often tell us to wait and He may say “not yet”. He often has to redirect our focus for a little while and give us a new one — one that can be just as fulfilling.

When we put His kingdom first we’re more sensitive to His plan for us during this waiting time. Waiting patiently keeps our hearts humble and turned toward God and the anticipation of His arrival is priceless!

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You have greater plans in store for me than I can even imagine. I await Your arrival with joy. Help me to be patient and enjoy each of your blessings as they come to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sacrifice of Thanksgiving

Psalms_100-4: Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
Psalms_100-4: Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

God Is Listening For the Sound of a Thankful Heart

“When you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the Lord, sacrifice it in such as way that it will be accepted on your behalf,” (Leviticus 22:29)

One day, while paying my electric bill, I decided to thank the company for the service they were providing me. “Thanks for my electricity,” I said, “It’s really quite a bargain for all the benefits I receive.” “What!” said the lady behind the counter, in amazement, “That’s the first time anyone has ever thanked us. All I ever hear around here are complaints.”

It’s a challenge to grow up with a thankful heart. From an early age we are exposed to a culture of complainers, gripers, grumblers, and critics. We complain about the weather, traffic, food, work, neighbors, bills, the government, church, and life in general. Worst of all, we are ungrateful toward God. It would be hard to count the number of complaints and criticisms that are daily spoken before Him and against Him. How can we, who have received so much, be thankful for so little?

One of the great indicators of true spirituality is not measured by how many times we go to church, how big our Bibles are, or how long we pray, but it is measured by the level of gratitude that is in our hearts. When we are ungrateful, the heart of God is saddened, the Holy Spirit is grieved, and the joy of the Lord is quenched within us.

Being thankful sweetens you,

       Grumbling sours you;

Being thankful brings sunshine to your countenance,

       Being ungrateful casts a shadow;

Being thankful brings a melody to your words,

       Criticism makes you sound like a clanging cymbal;

Being thankful keeps your feet on the pathway of celebration,

Complaint takes you down the road of despair.

When our hearts are filled with gratefulness we may feel like our thanksgiving is inadequate, but we can be certain that our thanksgiving is always appropriate. It will gladden the heart of God to hear your heartfelt thanks being freely offered to Him today.

Calloused Heart

Matthew_24-35: Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away
Matthew_24-35: Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away

“For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ (Matthew 13:15)

When the heat of summer faded into the cool fall, it was time for me to begin my walking program. I was so enthusiastic as I laced my shoes and took off in the delightful early morning air. Trees were vibrant colors, some flowers were still blooming and all was well with the world!

That was, unfortunately, until I began to experience some discomfort on one toe. Well, no matter, I pressed onward with my walk, enjoying the beauty of the day. Before long, it really hurt and I was very aware that something was wrong. Each step became painful and I started to hobble as I made the last turn for home. It seems the new walking shoes held my foot in a slightly different alignment, and the skin on my toe was being rubbed raw.

I doctored my toe and the next morning I tried to protect it with a fat padding of cotton and a Band-Aid. I thought that would be plenty of protection and went on my way. This added protection did help numb the pain – I couldn’t feel it quite as much, and there was no bleeding.  Day after day went by like this, and then one day I looked at that toe. The spot had become hard and callused where the blister had been, and I realized I hadn’t felt anything for quite some time.

Have you ever done something wrong, and had a terrible guilty conscious about it? Something which really hurts you in your heart, and you feel awful about it? Perhaps telling a small lie – so as not to hurt a friend – or cheating on a test, or one of a hundred different things we can do which are not in God’s will. Each time we do the same act over again, it becomes less painful, just as my blister had.

As we repeat the wrong thought or action, we may look for secular or even peer support to protect us against the hurt in our heart which is saying, “This is WRONG”. That may buffer our conscious, and lead us to totally callousness. When we feel nothing, and can repeatedly do wrong in God’s eye, we have given ourselves what God calls a hardened heart. It is just like that callous on my toe – eventually you feel no regret or no sense of evil as you continue down you path of wrongdoing.

It is a terrible thing when the heart becomes hardened, because then love can not penetrate it. We must all be on guard to listen to that little voice within us that tells us when we do something wrong. That voice is called The Holy Spirit, and He will help us stay out of the terrible rut of hard heartedness.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Last Sunday our pastor told an interesting story and, had it not been serious, it would have been funny. He told about a fellow in a support group who for months on end kept praying about a personal problem but never did anything about it. Week after week he would pray with seemingly great conviction, “Oh God, clean the cobwebs out of my life… clean the cobwebs out of my life!”

Finally, in utter frustration the leader of the group broke into the man’s prayer and prayed rather boisterously, “Oh God, KILL THE SPIDER!”

I can identify with this leader in that I, too, know of people who have been confessing the same sin and/or problem for years, asking God for deliverance but never doing anything about it.

If we are struggling with a besetting sin or bad habit, what can we do about it? Certainly pray and ask God for deliverance – but also pray that he will show us the root cause of our problem because, more often than not, our repetitive failures are the fruit of a deeper root. God not only wants to deliver us from habitual sins but also free us from the deeper root cause.

Suggested prayer: “Dear God, thank you that you have already done for me what I couldn’t do for myself in that you gave your Son, Jesus, to die for and free me from a life of sin and failure. Please help me to see the root cause of my besetting sin or problem [name it] and help me to find the help I need to overcome. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus’ name, amen.”

Good morning!

Thank You Jesus,

Salvation Prayer

If you don’t Know Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour and would like to accept him into your life as your personal Lord and Saviour, Please say this prayer:

Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from You. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward You. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that Your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your Will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

God Deserves Our Thanks… Always!

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ
