2-Timothy_3-16: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness

A young man came to me and said he was struggling with masturbation. I counselled him and asked him to throw his phone away since he uses it to watch pornography. He replied “Okay Sir” and left. While he was leaving, the Holy Spirit asked me to call him back. “Why did you tell him to throw his phone away? Won’t he receive calls again?’’ the Holy Spirit asked me.

So I called him back. While he stood and waited for me to speak to him, the Holy Spirit said something to me that changed my perspective about the God that I have come to believe. I was looking at the young man and I was crying. I hadn’t said anything to him yet, but what I heard the Holy Spirit say to me made me shed tears. The Holy Spirit said to me “Tell him to involve me in that mess… Anytime he wants to masturbate, let him sing worship songs” I shared it with the guy and he thanked me and left.

He was a member of our fellowship. Three weeks later, he came back and said to me “Pastor, every time I have that urge, once I start singing worship songs, the urge will go.” I was happy for him and said “Glory be to God”

After a while, another guy came and said “Pastor, I’m struggling with masturbation.” I replied him immediately and said “I have the medicine.” I told him to worship God once the urge to masturbate comes. He was happy, he thanked me and left.

It wasn’t up to two weeks, the guy came back and said “Pastor, Haa! even with the worship, I was still masturbating😭”

Me, I was shocked!

The first guy that came, I gave him Spirit and Life.

The second guy, I gave him Law.

That was the mistake I made.

There is a teaching in God that is custom-made for you. You don’t go and borrow somebody’s word.

Putting on trousers as a lady isn’t a sin. But I have seen people that said God told them not to wear it. If they wear it, it becomes a sin to them.

Something can be right but not right for you and in the lens of your destiny, you’re sinning against God.

I suppose one might regard Thomas Edison as one of the world’s greatest failures. This man tried more than a thousand different light bulbs until he got it right. Have you ever failed at something a thousand times before you got it right? If you had, your name might be right up there with that of Thomas Edison.

Actually Edison didn’t think of these failed experiments as failures. He regarded them as steps in a long process. But late in his life something happened to Thomas that would have defeated a lesser man.

Thomas Edison’s son Charles, one-time governor of New Jersey, tells the story. On the night of December 9, 1914, Edison Industries was virtually destroyed by fire. Edison lost two million dollars that night and much of his life’s work went up in flames. He was insured for only $238,000, because the buildings had been made of concrete, at that time thought to be fireproof.

Charles was 24; Thomas was 67. The young man ran about frantically, trying to find his father. Finally he came upon him, standing near the fire, his face ruddy in the glow, his white hair blown by the December winds.

“My heart ached for him,” Charles Edison said. “he was 67 – no longer a young man – and everything was going up in flames. He spotted me. ‘Charles,’ he shouted, ‘where’s your mother?’ 1 don’t know, Dad,’ I said. ‘Find her. Bring her here. She will never see anything like this again as long as she lives.'”

The next morning, walking about the charred embers of all his hopes and dreams, Thomas Edison said, “There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burned up. Thank God we can start anew.”

Three weeks after the fire, his firm delivered the first phonograph.

“But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)

Psalms_103-8: The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy

God Is Not Slow

We live in an instant society. Internet speed is no longer in seconds, but in nanoseconds. It is a day of fast food, speedy connections, super-fast computers, higher speed limits, and faster travel. We get frustrated, even angry, at having to wait in line, or slow service, or traffic, and things that take too much time. We have a limited view of time and this view greatly impacts out understanding of how God works.

The people were becoming tired and frustrated. Persecution of Christians was now rampant. They had held on to the hope that Jesus would soon return and put an end to it all. He promised that He would return, but where was He? Why was He being so slow in keeping His promise? Frustration was setting in and discouragement was just around the corner. Peter was concerned for the early Church, afraid that they would abandon the faith and give up. So he wrote them a letter of encouragement in which he notes a very important fact: “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

The early disciples struggled just as we do with issue of time. The delayed return of Christ led them to doubt that He would return at all, thus they were becoming discouraged. Though this verse speaks specifically to Christ’s return, it rises out of the overarching faithfulness of God. He is true to His Word and when it seems He is slipping in keeping His Word, He is not. We look at and understand time in nanoseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, etc. But God works within the framework of “kairos,” which is time understood broadly, such as a period of time.

That is why Peter uses the illustration, “with the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day.” (2 Peter 3:8) This is not to be understood as some sort of mathematical way to discover God’s timetable. Rather it is an illustration that although God’s timing is different from ours, it is nonetheless perfect.

God is not slow in keeping any of His promises and though it is not always fast enough for our liking or understanding, He does His work in perfect timing. What seems like slowness to us is actually patience. God is being patient with us for He does not “want anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

His patience has to do with our salvation: “Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation.” God doesn’t want anyone to perish, but all to have their life transformed and turned around, grounded in Him. This is not only true with regard to our Lord’s return, but with all of God’s work in us. We can be confident that God is faithfully accomplishing His plan and purposes in perfect timing. He is not slow in keeping His promises!

Beloved, let us relax and rest in our God’s faithfulness. He is patiently, persistently and passionately fulfilling His promises in and through us. Let us take heart in the assurance that He will accomplish His promises in “just the right time!”

Divine Anchor

Psalms_25-2: O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me

Trust God

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (Psalm 20:7)

The only answer I can offer to many people’s questions is, “Trust the Lord.”

To the gentleman who feels his life is over and cannot understand why the Lord is keeping him here, I say, “I think we need to trust that the Lord knows what He’s doing, and He must have a reason, even though we don’t know what that reason is.”

To the college students stressed about all their decisions about their education, careers, relationships, and the rest of their lives, I say, “Trust God to show you the way, and be patient.”

To couples struggling to keep their marriage together and are losing hope, “Do what is right and trust the Lord.”

To the loyal company man in shock because he lost his job and asks me, “Why has this happened to me?” I can only say, “I don’t know, but we need to trust God to see you through it.”

Saying, “Trust the Lord,” may sound trite, trivial, and like a cop-out. But it’s not. When we have more questions than answers, more pain than comfort, and our faith is wavering but honest, all we can do is trust God.
