1 Kings 12. The northern tribes revolt. Rehoboam made king

(Show chapter frame)

1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king. 2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;) 3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. 5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed. 6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people? 7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever. 8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him: 9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter? 10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins. 11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day. 13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him; 14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents. 17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day. 20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only. 21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying, 24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel. 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: 27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. 30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. 31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. 32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made. 33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

Genesis 11. The Tower Of Babel

Genesis 11. The Tower Of Babel

1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood: 11 And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. 12 And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah: 13 And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters. 14 And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber: 15 And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters. 16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg: 17 And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters. 18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu: 19 And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters. 20 And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug: 21 And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters. 22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor: 23 And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters. 24 And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah: 25 And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters. 26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. 28 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. 29 And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. 30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child. 31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. 32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

May GOD bless Nigeria, America and Israel and take care of us; May GOD make His face shine upon us, And be gracious to us; May the LORD lift up His countenance upon us, And give us peace, In Jesus Christ Name, we pray! Amen!

The Rapture: An Assurance of Hope

Revelation_21-4: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away
Revelation_21-4: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away

Rapture Part One. Bible Study

OPENING PRAYER: Father, please don’t let me miss your second coming of our Lord Jesus.

MEMORY VERSE: “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:17 (KJV)

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 4:12-18 (KJV)

12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The rapture is an event where all who have put their trust in Christ, living and dead, will suddenly be caught up from the earth, be joined with Christ in the air. Paul describes the rapture in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 as an event that must bring comfort to the believers.

LESSON AIM: To study what the rapture is

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to;

  1. Know what rapture is
  2. Know what scripture says about the rapture.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Thessalonians 4:12-18

(2) The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout with the voice of an archangel.

(3) Those of us that are alive and remain shall be caught up together in the air.

(4) With this assurance, we should comfort one another with this.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: WHAT IS RAPTURE?

(1) Transporting of believers to heaven at the second coming of Christ

(2) Acton in which believers will be caught up

(3) This is the final excitement and happiness, breakaway from peril in this world.

(4) It is used for a mystical union with God or for eternal life in heaven.

(5) It is a biblical doctrine of an end to our sojourn on earth.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE RAPTURE?

a) All believers in Christ will be changed. 1 Corinthians 15:51

b) The event will happen suddenly. 1 Corinthians 15:52

c) The Christians who have died will be raised with transformed bodies

d) Perishable earthly bodies will be transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die. 1 Corinthians 15:53

e) By the time we are transformed to heavenly bodies, death will be swallowed up in victory. 1 Corinthians 15:54.

f) The stars in the heaven shall fall and powers in heaven shall be shaken.

g) The sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give light.

SUMMARY: It is important to know that rapture will happen suddenly, unexpectedly, so we should be ready like the wise virgins in Matthew 25:1-4.

CONCLUSION: Rapture heralds the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ when He shall return to earth and dispatch angels to gather the elect from four corners of the earth to the welcoming party with Him as the bridegroom and the Host.

Disobedience leads to sin and death: Explore biblical examples (Saul, Achan, Adam & Eve) and the path to obedience for eternal life (Romans 5:19).

Obedience: Disobedience Leads To Sin And Death

TEXT: Romans 5:19 and 1 Corinthians 15:22

INTRODUCTION

Last week, we continued with the series on OBEDIENCE by studying: Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice. Today, we shall focus on the fact that disobedience leads to sin and death. Obedience has been severally defined since we commenced the series as compliance with an order, request, or law especially in deference to a higher authority. We learnt about the rewards that follow complete obedience; while being reminded that partial obedience is no obedience.

May we receive that grace to be fully obedient in all things in Jesus’ name, Amen!

OUTLINE 1: DISOBEDIENCE LEADS TO SIN

Disobedience in this instance means partial obedience or complete turn away from God’s ways/directives. Some instances:

  • Impatience leads to disobedience.

King Saul in 1 Sam 13:10-12 offered burnt offering that was to be performed by Samuel. One of the virtues of the fruit of the spirit is longsuffering [patience]. Gal 5:22.

  • Disobedience can lead to loss of authority/position.

King Saul feared the people, was stubborn and disobeyed Gods’ directives. 1 Samuel 15:22-24 & 26. No amount of our sacrifice can atone for disobedience; as Jesus Christ had made the ultimate sacrifice for us, Hebrews 10:10. Obedience is better than sacrifice.

  • Disobedience triggers the wrath of God.

In Joshua 6:17-19; God gave instruction that in Jericho; only Rehab the harlot and her family should be spared. But in Joshua 7:1, Achan took the accursed thing. This led to defeat of Israel by Ai. Thirty-six [36] men were killed because of God’s wrath. Also, in our text: Romans 5:19, the disobedience of Adam & Eve triggered the entrance of sin.

  • You reap what you sowed.

Gal 6:7-8 is apt. Partaking in the holy communion unworthily is an act of disobedience. 1 Corinthians 11:27-30. Verse 30 harps on spiritual death.

OUTLINE 2: DISOBEDIENCE LEADS TO DEATH

Death in this instance refers to spiritual and, in some cases, physical. Spiritual death is being alienated from the life of God [Romans 6:23]. Consider the following:

  • The case of Adam and Eve

Gen 2:16-17. God’s instructions to Adam were clear and straightforward. Both disobeyed and realized they were naked; a sign of spiritual deadness, Gen 3:6-7. As in Adam all die …. 1 Corinthians 15:22.

  • Is your spiritual garment in place?

Rev 16:15 enjoins us to watch [be vigilant/avoid disobedience] and keep our garment, otherwise we walk naked and subjected to shame. A word of advice in Luke 21:36.

  • There is an escape route from spiritual death.

John 3:16 is an escape route from spiritual death. If we obey, there is the assurance of everlasting life. John 8:51 is a reassurance that if we obey, we can never see spiritual death.

OUTLINE 3: DISOBEDIENCE THAT LED TO SIN, SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL DEATH

  • 1 Kings 13:1-26. A classic case of what we learnt today. Disobedience leads to sin,

Spiritual death, and even physical death.

CONCLUSION

The consequences of disobedience are too grievous to be ignored. Let us watch and pray that we will not be led into temptation [Matthew 6:13]. May the Lord release unto us the grace to flee from all appearance of evil [1 Thess 5:22].

Thank You Jesus,

As a teenager growing up, my room in our house was directly over Mother’s. At night I could see the lights from her room reflected on the trees outside my window. When I slipped downstairs hoping to talk to her a few minutes, I would find her shapely form bent beside her bed in prayer. It was useless to wait for her to rise because she would be there for hours on end, so I would trudge back up to my room. And no matter how early I awoke in the morning, I would see those lights from her window once again reflected on the trees outside. When I tumbled down the stairs, I would find her seated at her big, flat-top desk, earnestly studying one of the fourteen different translations of the Bible spread out around her. My mother chose to make abiding in Christ one of the priorities of her life.

Mother’s abiding was rooted in a love relationship with Jesus that was the secret of her life. As a result of her abiding, and the obedience that was integrated into it, the hallmark of Mother’s life was joy. Her face radiated it! Her eyes sparkled with it! And I’m left to wonder . . . what outward evidence of my inner relationship with Jesus do my children see?

Evening: Luke 24:1-35

Proverb: Proverbs 5

Romans 14:19 NKJV

Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.

Have you ever seen two kids building sandcastles together in the sand? Typically, one likes to build while the other one comes by and stomps it, especially if they are siblings. One builds up, and the other takes joy in tearing down. Why? Mostly, it is for the reaction. Christians can do this as well. Worship, music, food, and dress are minor issues that many love to argue about. What does it do? It distracts from the Gospel.

Doing things just to offend or argue is wrong. God is at work in our lives at different speeds and times. “I get it; why don’t you get it?” That is a prideful statement. It is probable that another brother or sister “gets it” in other ways better than you do. That is how it works. We fit together and cause each other to grow. The church is made of individual people with individual gifts, and no one person is the whole church. We should build one another up, and we will be encouraged to do so as well. What if the church, at large, really did Romans 14:19? Let’s start and see.

Life Lesson:

We should encourage others.

Dear God,

Thank You for loving me and for the many individual gifts that make up the body of Christ. Lord, help me put off disagreements and value others. Forgive me when I have caused division and strife. Give me the spirit to be a blessing to someone else today.

In Jesus Christ Mighty Name! Amen.

TREM Daily Devotional: God remembers and will judge your attackers. Find assurance in His promise to fight your battles (1 Samuel 15:2-3).

Dear,

Here is your wisdom for today:

YOUR ATTACKERS WILL NOT GO FREE

“Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way when he came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.” (1 Samuel 15:2-3 KJV)

God told Saul to wipe off everything in Amalek, but Saul left some things. So God woke the Prophet, Samuel up saying, Look at this Saul, look at the man I raised up, but he has obviously forgotten where I brought him from. I took him, and I told him what to do Amalek, who treated the Israelites badly on their way to the Promised Land. They attacked God’s people on their journey. And so God remembered the evil they did and decided to judge them.

Many times, Christians go through injustices and we tend to imagine that God has forgotten. Let me tell you, God will never forget you neither will He forsake you. God will remember those who are fighting you and judge them. Judgment awaits everyone that is attacking you.

The book of 2 Thessalonians 1:6 (KJV) says “Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;” He will fight your battles. None of your attackers will go free. He will silence your enemies. That is why He wants you to focus on Him and keep worshipping Him. He said I would take care of them. I assure you that your God will arise and your enemies will be scattered.

If only you understand your position in Christ, you will always go to sleep and not be sleeping with one eye open. Do you know what God said? He said if any man touches you, he has touched Him. You are the apple of His eyes. No weapon fashioned against you shall prosper. The weapons will be formed, but He said it is a waste of time and effort.

2-Timothy_4-7: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith

Pastor David McGee on Romans 2:1: The danger of self-righteous judgment, urging self-reflection, grace, and sharing Christ’s love.

Judge yourself

Roman 2:1NKJV

Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

In Romans chapter one, we learn about the unrighteousness of man. In chapter two, Paul addresses our self-righteousness; our desire to consider ourselves better than everybody else. Nobody wants to be called self-righteous, yet we quickly judge others. Friend, be aware of your weakness and sinfulness. If you think that once you became a Christian you stopped sinning, you should check out the passage below:

1 John 1:8-10NKJV

8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Judge yourself. If you look long at the sins of others and not enough at your own sins, you will develop spiritual pride, which is a stench to God. Have you ever looked at someone and thought there was no hope for them? Well, then, you are saying that God’s mercy is limited. You pridefully say that your sins are covered, but others are not.

Every person needs God’s saving power and grace, whether we deem them good people or not. Stop and think… How much have you been forgiven? Does this mean we cannot speak into others’ lives? We can and should, but not in condemnation. Just as God has heaped His grace so abundantly on you, in discernment, you can speak into someone’s life from your experiences with an attitude of love peppered with grace.

You cannot condemn someone and offer hope simultaneously. The moment we start to condemn people is the moment we forget our mission. What is our mission? Our mission is to tell people about Jesus Christ.

Life Lesson:

Seeing the evil in others does not root out the evil in you.

Dear God,

Thank You for forgiving me of my sins. I am so grateful for Your grace. Please forgive me for times when I, in my own pride, looked at someone else and condemned them in my mind. Please give me opportunities to tell people about Christ Jesus. Thank You Heavenly Father for in Jesus Christ mighty name I pray! Amen.

D.L. Moody’s selfless act of service at Northfield: A powerful example of humility and following Christ’s servant heart (Philippians 2:5-7).

Serving Others

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” (Philippians 2:5-7)

In September 1880, D.L. Moody, the famous American evangelist, held the first of the Northfield Bible Conferences in Northfield, Massachusetts. Invited to the bible conference were over 300 visitors and among those that came to the Northfield Seminary for the conference was a delegation from Great Britain.

As was their custom, each English guest put his shoes outside his room to be cleaned by the hall servants overnight. But of course this was America and there were no hall servants. Walking the dormitory halls that night, Moody saw the shoes and determined not to embarrass his brothers.  So, he mentioned the need to some seminary students who were there, but met with only silence or pious excuses. Moody returned to the dorm, gathered up the shoes, and, alone in his room, the renowned speaker began to clean and polish the shoes. Only the unexpected arrival of a friend in the midst of the work revealed the secret.

When the foreign visitors opened their doors the next morning, their shoes were shined. They never know by whom. Moody told no one, but his friend told a few people, and during the rest of the conference, different men volunteered to shine the shoes in secret.

Are you the type of servant who is ready to serve others in any capacity? Today in prayer, thank Christ Jesus that He humbled Himself to be a servant and seek to follow the Lord’s example.

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26)
