Correction or Destruction? Why You Must Never Discipline a Child in Anger (A Life-Changing Staff Meeting Story)

So, at our staff meeting today, I asked everyone to share “a day they will never forget and the lessons they learnt from that experience.”

Little did I know that question would open a conversation that would change something in me forever… and it might change something in you too.

So, read carefully ❗

One after the other, everyone shared their stories… some funny, some inspiring. Then it got to one of our new staff who joined us just a few days ago.

She started quietly “It was the day I lost my right eye.”

I was like, “Which eye❓”

She’s always on transparent glasses, so I never noticed anything unusual…

Then she said “My dad beat me out of anger when I was younger. His hand mistakenly hit my eye. After so many treatments, I eventually lost it.”

At that moment, I went silent ❗

Because, I had planned to beat my son tonight for something he did earlier. But after hearing her story, I changed my mind immediately.

As if that wasn’t enough…

Another staff shared that his dad can barely hear properly today because his grandfather once slapped him out of anger, and that single slap damaged his ear for life❗

They have to shout and her Dad read lips to understand their messages.

Those stories broke me! And they taught me something I will never forget…

Never discipline a child in anger…. Never❗

Because one minute of uncontrolled anger can create a lifetime of pain and regret❗

Sometimes what we call correction becomes destruction❗

So, please, if you are a parent reading this, let’s learn to control our emotions. Correct with love, discipline with sense, but never in anger ❗

May God help us raise our children with patience.

May He protect our homes from actions we will regret forever.

𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕄𝔼𝕊𝕊𝔸𝔾𝔼:

The Oxford dictionary says that honour means “to regard someone with great respect or high esteem.” The word honour means “to esteem and value as precious.” To honour someone is to value him or her highly, to bestow value on him or her. Without complete and genuine honour to your parents, it will be impossible to honour anyone else.

The fifth commandment states, “Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee” (Exodus 20:12). The relationship with your parents is so significant that it is the first earthly relationship addressed in the commandments and it is the only one that comes with a blessing from God.

So, anytime you are not obeying your parents, or not giving them honour, it means you are displeasing the Lord. If you want to please the Lord, you must honour your parents.

You can find a good example in the Bible – our Lord Jesus Christ. You will discover that Jesus honoured His earthly parents even though they were not perfect. In the book of Luke 2:41 -51, you see that Jesus followed His parents to Jerusalem to worship, but when they were going back, Jesus stayed behind and was listening to the scribes. The parents assumed that he must be part of the company on the journey, and they had gone a day’s journey before they discovered that Jesus was not with them. They turned back and looked for Jesus for three days, before they found Him in the temple. They said, “Son, why did you treat us like this?” He replied, “Don’t you know that I should be about my Father’s business?” He got up and followed them and was subject to them. That is Jesus Christ. This shows you the importance of honouring your parents.

Proverbs_22-6: Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it

2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

MESSAGE.

The Bible teaches that children have mandatory responsibilities to their parents. As a matter of fact, Children owe their parents certain important duties that include the obligation to respect, honour and obey them. Children are the heritage of the Lord and God has a special interest in their well-being. Meanwhile God is a disciplinarian as revealed in Revelation 3:19:

“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”

God has decided to commit the discipline of children to their parents as caretakers for Him; therefore, children must cooperate with their parents to make easy for their own benefit. Obedience in this respect attracts long life and prosperity.

If you invested so much in your children, but have retired and they are gainfully employed, yet they ignore you, will you be happy with them? Some fathers have placed curses on their children for neglecting them. A righteous child will not neglect his parents at any time. He will make sure that those of them that are not saved are led to Jesus. After all, that is the greatest gift he can give them. Besides that, he will ensure that they have a roof over their heads and their needs are met in the area of feeding, clothing, healthcare, etc.

God has joined children to their parents as partners in progress. For two people to work in agreement, they must see and mind the same thing. They must be focused on the same goal.

God’s focus is that children have parents that will be godly examples to them, while making efforts to bring them up in the way of the Lord. God wants parents that will introduce their children to Him at very tender ages, so that they may learn to obey God and become familiar with His commandments, worship and fellowship. Children should be careful not to be a source of sorrow and pain to their parents. Proverbs 17:25 says:

“A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.”

I pray that God in His mercy will visit every Christian home and intervene in the life of every wayward child today in the Name of Jesus.

Our Children.

Deuteronomy_6-7: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

“For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he has spoken of him”. Genesis 18:19 (KJV).

I encourage all parents to consciously train their children in the statues and way of the Lord. One legacy you owe these children apart from education is to ensure that they are trained in the way of the Lord, knowing that when they grow they will not depart from them. The scripture declares concerning Abraham saying, “For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him and they shall keep the way of the Lord.

Beloved, as the world becomes more and more developed and sophisticated, the issues competing for our children’s attention also increases. For instance our children are daily exposed to a 24hours cable and satellite TV, the internet and all kinds of video games that help to shape their thoughts, beliefs, intellect and life styles. As good as those technological devices are they could however be potentially dangerous to our children in terms of focus, morals and character.

It is our responsibility to keep our children focused on the right things at all times and also gives them a better alternative to what the world has to offer.

Understand that children, by their nature, are very restless and adventurous; that means they will always try to experiment with the things they see or hear. We must therefore consciously redirect their energies and interest by showing them the way of the Lord not just by words but also by our actions. We must understand that children copy a lot and they learn fast by example, so we cannot afford to say or do the same things we don’t want them to emulate. As a parent, don’t say one thing and mean another. I declare today that your children shall bring joy to you continually and glory to the name of the Lord. It is well with your home in Jesus name.

Message

The Bible in several passages uses the word fool to describe a disobedient child. It is important therefore to take a closer look at the characteristics of fools as presented in the Scripture.
According to Proverbs, a destructive fate awaits the fool. This is especially so because of the rebellious attitude of fools. The Word of God also describes fool as arrogant, untrustworthy, argumentative, reckless, and impulsive. Fools usually refuse instructions to their own detriment. The Bible says in Proverbs 22:15: “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.”
Children are usually disobedient when they wrongly assume that they know better than their elders, especially their parents. Such attitude would naturally give birth to arrogance. It is this arrogant attitude that makes them impulsive, that is, they confidently speak and act without properly thinking through. This is also the root of reckless behaviour of such children. Because they think they know so much, when in fact they know very little, they usually get into needless arguments.
The combination of these detrimental behaviours would usually lead to unstable lifestyle. When these vices are found in anyone, success will be far from such a person and destruction would be looming over such a life. I hereby prophecy into the life of every child of God that is reading this devotional today, the Lord will purge your life of all evil vices and behaviours today in Jesus name.
The encouraging thing is that God has a glorious purpose even for young people. And the earlier they start pursuing the purpose of God for their lives the better. The purpose of God for Christian children is to be wise sons and daughters. Their wisdom is always expressed in their humility and simple obedience. The reward of their obedience and godliness is always evident in their success stories and testimonies.
Obedient children are always at peace with God and man; they live in good health, and are usually free from any form of addiction. Because they have sound minds, they cannot be lured into cults and other destructive lifestyles. Even at a tender age, an obedient child views himself as a role model and a future leader. An obedient child is conscious of God’s purpose as his sole occupation and his mind is constantly ruminating over how to achieve this. This awareness will keep his mind fixed on the word of God.

Prayer Point

Father, Please help me to be obedient in all things and help me to fulfil Your purpose for my life in Jesus’ name.

18. Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
19. For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

Message

The Bible declared the father as the head of home- Head of the mother and the children. As such, fathers have complete authority within the household to direct the affairs of the family, and to administer discipline when necessary. However, Apostle Paul admonishes that fathers should handle authority over their children with care; they are to be careful not to provoke their children to wrath. Some fathers are guilty of using their authority unreasonably in ways that cause their children to harbour resentment. However, fathers have the responsibility to bring their children up in the way of the Lord. In many cultures today, parents have submitted and completely relinquished their God given responsibility to raise godly children to school teachers, Sunday School teachers, pastors, or governmental institutions. Every Children parent should know that God will hold them responsible for the success or failure of their wards. Children are God’s heritage, we have an awesome responsibility and authority over them, we are responsible for them before God, and we will surely render our account to God over them.
Are there any particular reason (s) why parents, particularly fathers, are called by God to play such a crucial, God ordained role in the upbringing or discipleship of their children ?

Ephesians 6:1-4 gives us a clue:
“CHILDREN, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord”.
God knows that from childhood, little children gradually lean to love and trust their parents because of the relationship they have. Children normally grow up to receive love and care from their parents in form of feeding, clothing, washing, and protection from cold and other harmful circumstances. Therefore children naturally gravitate towards their parents. For the same reasons, children are more likely to learn the ways and manners of their parents by default. Most children would choose to learn from their parents because parents are the first heroes of children. God in His wisdom is fully aware of these factors; He therefore designed the family to take advantage of the opportunity provided by nature.
The Bible provides a very good balance here; children are to obey their parents, while parents are to treat their children with respect so that they will obey without coercion. God expects children to obey their parents for Christ’s sake, even if their parents are not believers. Also, children should not commit any sinful act just because their parents command them to. When faced with choice between the two, children must obey God rather than man.

Father, please make me a successful parent; don’t let me fail You over my children.

Prayer Points To Protect Our Children From All Evil

Isaiah_54-17: No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD

Father, I thank You for the provision of deliverance through the blood of Jesus.

Any verbal or written covenant made with any evil spirit on my and my children’s behalf, be cancelled now by the blood of Jesus.

Every agreement I and my children have consciously or unconsciously made to the devil, be cancelled by the blood of Jesus.

Every handwriting and ordinances against my life and my children’s lives be cancelled by the blood of Jesus.

Every source of evil flow into my and my children’s lives, DIE, in the name of Jesus.

Every arrow of failure at the edge of breakthroughs, GO BACK to your sender, in the name of Jesus.

Every imagery, effigy, symbol, picture and statue representing me and my children in the kingdom of darkness, CATCH FIRE! in the name of Jesus.

By the power in the blood of Jesus, I stand against every death sentence which the enemy have passed against my life and my children’s lives, in the name of Jesus.

Psalm 118:17 says:
I (mention their names) shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD

Isaiah 54:17 says:

4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

Message

Matthew_18-3: And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Children are not just God’s property, they are also God’s weapons of war. This is why you must be very careful in the way you handle or treat them. Jesus gave us a fascinating revelation about children in Matthew 18:10, where He said:
“Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.”
From this revelation, we understand that every child has at least one angel guiding him or her. Have you seen an angel before? By His grace I have seen them a couple of times and I can say that they can be fearfully huge, particularly some of the mighty angels. If you were to meet one of such angels, the first thing he will likely say to you is “Fear not!” Why? Nobody will see an angel for the first time without being terrified.
Speaking of the size of some of the mighty angels: although one of the world’s largest airplanes is an Airbus A380, do you know that one mighty angel can carry this airplane on the palm of his hand? God says that every child has an angel, and every one of such angels has direct access to God. Attaching a powerful angel to a child is what makes children a terrific weapon. If you mess around with a child, you are inviting an angel of God to deal with you.

Moreover, children are weapons in God’s hands because we the older ones are so preoccupied with the hustle and bustle of life that our ears have become dull of hearing. When God speaks, we often don’t hear, but the ears of children are open to God. They do not worry as we do. In fact, children believe that all they need will be provided for by their parents. So time after time, when God wants to send a message, He could send it through a child. This is one reason why parents must adhere strictly to God’s word in raising their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. A child that is brought up to love and fear the Lord will be a great asset and tool in God’s hands. Such a family, as busy as the parents may be, will not lack divine direction, as the children will be able to hear from God. How often does God speak to your children? Are you raising them in the ways of God?

Key Point

God may have been speaking to your godly children. If they have not told you, it could be that you have not created a conducive atmosphere for them to do so.
