Peter Obi on Nigeria’s Democracy: Concerns over VeryDarkMan’s arrest, treatment of judges, NANS allegations, and the rule of law. Calls for a just Nigeria.

By Peter Obi

@PeterObi

The Recent developments in our nation continue to raise serious concerns about the direction we are headed as a democracy. The tension in the land aggravated by hardship is being needlessly fueled by our attitude to the rule of law and human rights.

The arrest of Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), though perhaps within the legal rights of security agencies, was carried out in a manner that left many Nigerians unsettled.

The display of force, lacking in transparency and civility, closely resembled an abduction, a disturbing method that not only creates fear but also risks being mimicked by criminal elements. If Nigerians begin to struggle to distinguish between legitimate arrests and unlawful abductions, we will lose a vital layer of national security and accountability.

This trend is not new. We must recall that even our esteemed judges, the last line of defence for justice, have suffered similar indignities in recent years. When those who interpret the law are treated with such disregard, it is difficult to expect that ordinary citizens will feel protected under the law.

Moreover, these methods are beginning to affect our economy and business environment. The backlash directed at GTBank, allegedly linked to the circumstances surrounding Mr. Otse’s arrest, has had serious reputational consequences. At a time when investor confidence is already fragile, we must do all we can to avoid actions that tarnish institutions or undermine the trust of both citizens and the international community.

One cannot help but ask: was it impossible to invite Mr. Otse in a civil, transparent, and legal manner? Would that not have spared Nigerians, GTBank, and our national image the unnecessary shame and losses we now witness?

Similarly troubling are allegations surrounding the so-called adoption of the NANS President If true, it raises critical questions about the independence of student leadership and the subtle erosion of young voices in our democracy. Nigeria’s youth should not feel coerced, silenced, or absorbed into political agendas that do not reflect their will. The oppression of young voices, whether through force, patronage, or intimidation, is a dangerous path that we must not normalize.

We must return to a Nigeria where justice is done and is seen to be done without theatrics or abuse. A country where youth can speak freely, judges can serve with dignity, and institutions act responsibly. That is the Nigeria we must rebuild.

A new Nigeria is POssible!  –PO

Nigerian Islamic Cleric Ibrahim Jalo Jalingo Calls For Execution of Those Who Leave Islam

Sheikh Dr. Ibrahim Jalo Jalingo, the National Chairman of the Council of Ulama’Jibwis Nigeria, has called for the execution of those who leave Islam for another religion.

In a controversial post on his Facebook page on Thursday, Jalingo reignited a contentious debate on apostasy and religious conversion.

Jalingo, an outspoken cleric within the Islamic community, declared that “whoever changes his religion should be killed,” citing a Hadith attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The statement was made in response to a criticism from a user identified as Masussuka, who had questioned the authenticity of the Hadith, claiming that it contradicts the Qur’an.

The Hadith in question, “Whoever changes his religion, then kill him,” has been a point of contention among Islamic scholars for centuries, with varying interpretations regarding its relevance and application in modern times.

In his post, Sheikh Jalingo responded by asserting that the Hadith does not contradict the teachings of the Qur’an.

He emphasised that the Qur’an, in verses such as Surah At-Tawbah (9:5) and Surah An-Nisa (4:89), explicitly permits the killing of polytheists and apostates.

According to Jalingo, these verses justify the execution of individuals who abandon Islam and convert to another religion.

“Only an ignorant person like Masussuka would claim that the Hadith ‘Whoever changes his religion, kill him’ contradicts the Qur’an,” Jalingo said.

“In fact, the Qur’an itself not only permits the killing of those who commit apostasy but even allows the killing of all polytheists.”

He further argued that the verse: “There is no compulsion in religion” (La ikraha fi al-deen) has been abrogated by the aforementioned verses, which he believes more clearly dictate the treatment of apostates.

Jalingo also referenced the principle of “naskh,” or abrogation, within Qur’anic revelation to support his stance.

In a final critique of Masussuka, Jalingo dismissed his opponent as a “deeply ignorant and morally depraved individual,” using derogatory language to further discredit the critic’s position.

Jalingo’s statement has drawn the ire of religious leaders, while many Islamic scholars argued that such views promote intolerance and violence.

Many people have expressed concern against his stand about the implications of this rhetoric, particularly in a multi-religious society where freedom of belief is enshrined in both national and international law.

Others have called for greater emphasis on religious tolerance, peace, and coexistence in the face of rising global tensions between different faiths.

Are You A Leader?

Are You A Leader?

“And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen!” (Revelation 1:6)

One commodity the world is in short supply of is good leaders. Even in families, they are needed. A family can be the smallest organisation – comprising the husband and his wife. Yet, if the man lacks leadership skills to provide the required direction, guidance, coordination and control, it may be difficult for the family to realize its collective goal. Every organization is only as good as its leaders. Therefore, it becomes mandatory for future leaders to acquire leadership training, education and skills. To succeed, you will need to learn from those who succeeded or failed and why they had such outcomes.

“For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14). Position of leadership is not meant for all but for the chosen few. In the world, there is a large space for followers, whereas the space reserved for leaders is quite small. But in the Kingdom of God, it is possible for everyone who receives Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Saviour to become a leader. Revelation 1:6 says Christ has made us kings and priests unto God the Father. Every king has his sphere of influence, area of authority, and subjects under him. If you have been saved, then exercise your God-given authority and dominion over sin, sickness, satan, agents of darkness and elemental forces. If they are convinced you know your kingdom rights, they will have no choice but to obey you.

Believers in Christ are destined to reign for 1000 years with the KING of kings during the millennial reign and then eternally with Jesus Christ. In other words, you were born to reign. However, are you preparing for this great leadership opportunity? Some people struggle, fight, malign others and carry out all tricks in the book just to have an opportunity of occupying a leadership position during their lifetime. But after a few years in that position, they become eternally irrelevant. In contrast, you can be relevant today and in eternity. You may not become a president, governor or captain of industry but you can become the spiritual father of the president or governor. You can become the mentor youths would like to pattern their lives after. You can become a reference point standing as light in a dark world. Are you occupying this vantage position?

God sees you as a leader. But if you do not see yourself as such, you may never lead throughout your life.

May the LORD bless Nigeria, American and Israel and take care of us; May the LORD make His face shine upon us, And be gracious to us; May the Lord lift up His countenance upon us, And give us peace, In Jesus Christ Name, we pray! Amen!

Divisions Not Allowed In God’s House

Divisions Not Allowed In God’s House

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” (Corinthians 1:10)

If there will be unity in a family, church or a group of people, the role of the leader cannot be over emphasized. A leader should be the unifying force over those he or she leads. In this regard, the leader should ensure his subordinates’ opposing or dissenting views are harmonized in a way as to carry all of them along their common objective for being together in the first place. Unfortunately, some leaders deliberately encourage divisions, by sowing seeds of discord and turning one subordinate against the other. They call it divide and rule ‘strategy’. That is satanic! Some leaders encourage or provide the platform for subordinates to create camps. Not Jesus! As long as Jesus was physically present, He was the rallying point of unity for all His disciples. One day, two brother – James and John brought their mother to lobby Jesus, so that they would secure the highest positions in Heaven, right beside the Lord Himself (Matthew 20:20-24). When the other disciples heard of it, they were very angry! That move could have broken the twelve into separate camps. But the Lord handled it with wisdom and they remained united without killing the desire of the Zebedees to attain heavenly greatness.

It is very challenging to unite people with diverse backgrounds, goals, interest and understanding. However, it is very easy to cause division. One hallmark of a true leader is that he or she is not easily carried away by comments or selfish actions of the team he or she is leading, as the group goal is uppermost in his or her heart. Another person who could not stand God’s church being broken into camps was Paul. In His days, converts began to break into at least four different camps right in the church in Corinth but with wisdom, Paul resolved this and unified Christ’s church. Are you instrumental to the division of God’s church? You are calling for God’s judgement. Repent and restitute. Go and meet the people you sowed those seeds of discord into and compel them to reverse their rebellious acts. This will be good evidence of your repentance.

A body that is dismembered cannot operate as whole. A part of the body can never be whole. Division limits us. Strive for peace and unity.

May the LORD bless Nigeria, American and Israel and take care of us; May the LORD make His face shine upon us, And be gracious to us; May the Lord lift up His countenance upon us, And give us peace, In Jesus Christ Name, we pray! Amen!
