Joseph Mattera explores the Trinity’s implications (perichoresis) for governance, society, families, and business, emphasizing unity in diversity and relational harmony.

The Implications of the Trinity: Exploring the Perichoresis of God Part 2 by JOSEPH MATTERA

Theology

The Trinity’s Impact on Human Government, Plurality, and Harmony in Society

The doctrine of the Trinity, particularly through the lens of perichoresis (mutual indwelling and dynamic unity), offers profound insights into human governance, societal structures, and relational harmony. It addresses the tension between the One and the Many—unity and diversity—and provides a model for harmonious interaction within families, businesses, and communities. Here are the key ways the Trinitarian framework can shape and impact these spheres:

The Trinity and Human Government: A Model for Unity in Diversity

The Trinity exemplifies a perfect balance between unity and plurality. In the Godhead, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct persons with unique roles, yet share a single essence and will. This dynamic provides a theological basis for understanding how governments can embrace plurality while maintaining unity.

Unity of Purpose: Governments can reflect the Trinity by fostering shared values and goals (e.g., justice, peace, and human flourishing) while allowing for diversity in representation and expression.

Plurality of Roles: Just as each person of the Trinity plays a distinct role, governmental structures should recognize and respect the unique contributions of individuals, regions, and societal institutions.

When governments prioritize unity without erasing or promoting diversity without abandoning shared purpose, they reflect the relational harmony of the triune God.

Balancing the One and the Many in Society

The philosophical problem of the One and the Many—how unity and diversity coexist—is resolved in the Trinity. This balance has implications for human society:

Community and Individuality: The Trinity shows that individuality and community are not opposed but interdependent. Societies thrive when individuals are valued for their unique contributions while working toward the common good.

Authority and Cooperation: In the Trinity, there is both authority (e.g., the Father sending the Son) and cooperation (e.g., the Spirit empowering the Son). This dynamic provides a model for leadership and collaboration within societal structures.

A Trinitarian vision avoids extremes like totalitarianism (unity at the expense of diversity) and anarchism (diversitywithout unity).

Harmony in Families: The Trinity as a Relational Ideal

The relational nature of the Trinity provides a powerful model for family life:

Mutual Love and Respect: The Father, Son, and Spirit honor and glorify one another in perfect love (John 17:1). Similarly, families thrive when members practice self-giving love, mutual respect, and humility.

Distinct Roles in Unity: In the Trinity, distinct roles (e.g., Father as Creator, Son as Redeemer, Spirit as Sanctifier) do not diminish equality. Likewise, family members can embrace their unique roles (e.g., parents and children) while valuing one another’s equal worth.

Families reflecting the Trinitarian model prioritize both individual needs and collective well-being, fostering an environment of harmony and growth.

Trinitarian Principles in Business

Businesses can also reflect the unity and diversity of the Trinity:

Shared Vision and Goals: Just as the Trinity acts in unity with a shared purpose, successful organizations align their efforts toward common objectives. A clear mission fosters unity across departments and teams.

Diversity of Gifts and Contributions: The Trinity celebrates diversity in action (e.g., the Father planning, the Son accomplishing, the Spirit applying redemption). Similarly, businesses should value diverse skill sets, perspectives, and contributions, recognizing that variety strengthens the whole.

Relational Leadership: A Trinitarian approach to leadership emphasizes relationship over hierarchy, prioritizing collaboration, servant leadership, and mutual empowerment. Businesses that embrace these principles create cultures of innovation, trust, and shared success.

Community Structures: The Trinity as the Blueprint for Harmony

The relational and cooperative dynamic of the Trinity provides a blueprint for harmonious communities:

Interdependence: Communities thrive when individuals and groups recognize their interdependence. The Trinity shows that no person or group exists in isolation; each contributes to and benefits from the whole.

Unity Amid Diversity: Communities can maintain unity despite cultural, ethnic, or ideological diversity by focusing on shared values, just as the Trinity is united in love and purpose.

Conflict Resolution: The Trinity’s self-giving love serves as a model for resolving conflicts. Communities can overcome division and foster peace by prioritizing humility, reconciliation, and mutual understanding.

The Trinitarian vision calls for communities to embrace both unity and diversity, cultivating environments where all can flourish.

Theological Foundations for Leadership and Authority

The Trinity provides a theological framework for understanding leadership:

Servant Leadership: The Son demonstrates leadership through self-sacrifice and service (Philippians 2:5–8). Leaders in any sphere—government, family, business—should emulate this example by prioritizing the well-being of those they serve.

Shared Authority: Just as authority is shared within the Trinity, leadership structures should encourage collaboration and delegation rather than centralized control. This model fosters trust, accountability, and mutual respect in leadership.

Justice and Equity: Lessons from the Trinity

The relational equality of the Trinity inspires principles of justice and equity in societal structures:

Equality in Value: Though the Father, Son, and Spirit have distinct roles, they are equal in essence and dignity. Similarly, all individuals should be treated with equal value and respect, regardless of their societal role or status.

(This does not mean that everyone should impose their ideology on society. True unity honors diversity without compromising truth. Just as the triune God embodies perfect harmony in distinct persons, a flourishing society must uphold values rooted in God’s moral order—values that affirm human dignity, justice, and love. While all voices deserve respect, only those value systems aligned with biblical ethics can sustain the flourishing that reflects God’s design for humanity.)

Fairness in Distribution: Just as the Trinity operates in perfect balance, societal systems should strive for fairness in opportunities, resources, and responsibilities.

Justice rooted in the Trinity promotes dignity, fairness, and harmony.

Creativity and Collaboration

The Trinity’s creative activity (e.g., in Genesis 1:1–2) highlights the power of collaboration:

Creativity in Diversity: The triune God demonstrates that diversity enriches creativity. Teams and communities that embrace different perspectives and talents produce innovative solutions.

Shared Work and Joy: The Trinity works in joyful unity, revealing that collaboration is productive and deeply fulfilling.

Creativity rooted in Trinitarian principles leads to flourishing in art, business, and problem-solving.

The Role of Self-Giving Love in All Structures

At the heart of the Trinity is self-giving love. This love should shape every human institution:

In Families: Parents and children reflect the Trinity when they prioritize each other’s needs above their own.

In Businesses: Organizations thrive when leaders serve employees and customers with generosity and integrity.

In Governments: Policies rooted in self-giving love prioritize the well-being of citizens over personal or partisan gain.

Self-giving love transforms relationships, making them reflect the character of God.

Toward a Trinitarian Society

Ultimately, the doctrine of the Trinity offers a vision for a society where unity and diversity coexist in harmony:

Unity Without Uniformity: Societies can remain united without suppressing individuality or diversity.

Diversity Without Division: Differences can be celebrated without fracturing relationships.

By reflecting the relational nature of the Trinity, human societies can overcome division, foster peace, and pursue shared flourishing.

When we allow this vision to shape our structures and interactions, we reflect the glory of the triune God, creating a society marked by justice, peace, and relational flourishing.

Who Are You Following? A parable of the Benin-Ore road: Choose your leaders wisely in life and faith. Test the spirit and know your guides.

WHO ARE YOU FOLLOWING?

Before the Benin-Ọrẹ highway was repaired to its current state, it was known for terrible traffic. I once got stuck there, we had already spent about five hours between Ore and Benin and had barely made any progress.

Then we saw a Hilux take a detour, and our Agofure driver decided to follow. Soon, many other vehicles followed us, trusting that the Hilux driver knew a better route.

We followed him for about 40 minutes deep into unfamiliar area. Suddenly, the Hilux turned into a farm driveway. The driver got down to open his farm gate. We were shocked.

We asked him, “Oga, nor be shortcut to Benin be dis?”

He replied, “No, na my farm I dey go.”

We asked why he didn’t signal or warn others, seeing how many vehicles were trailing him. He simply said, “I saw all of you, but it’s not my business where you are going.”

Ahhhhhhh.

That day, na so kàsálà burst. Vehicles were stuck on the narrow bush path, struggling to turn back. It took us another two hours of frustration, confusion, and shouting before we could find our way back to the main road.

   Who are you following?

Do you know where they are truly headed?

Do they care where you end up?

In life and in faith, not everyone ahead of you knows the way to your destiny. Some are only journeying to their own destiny — and they are not concerned about your soul or your future.

Be careful who you follow. Test every spirit. Know your spiritual leaders. Not everyone leading is sent by your Ẹlẹda to guide you.

D.L. Moody’s selfless act of service at Northfield: A powerful example of humility and following Christ’s servant heart (Philippians 2:5-7).

Serving Others

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” (Philippians 2:5-7)

In September 1880, D.L. Moody, the famous American evangelist, held the first of the Northfield Bible Conferences in Northfield, Massachusetts. Invited to the bible conference were over 300 visitors and among those that came to the Northfield Seminary for the conference was a delegation from Great Britain.

As was their custom, each English guest put his shoes outside his room to be cleaned by the hall servants overnight. But of course this was America and there were no hall servants. Walking the dormitory halls that night, Moody saw the shoes and determined not to embarrass his brothers.  So, he mentioned the need to some seminary students who were there, but met with only silence or pious excuses. Moody returned to the dorm, gathered up the shoes, and, alone in his room, the renowned speaker began to clean and polish the shoes. Only the unexpected arrival of a friend in the midst of the work revealed the secret.

When the foreign visitors opened their doors the next morning, their shoes were shined. They never know by whom. Moody told no one, but his friend told a few people, and during the rest of the conference, different men volunteered to shine the shoes in secret.

Are you the type of servant who is ready to serve others in any capacity? Today in prayer, thank Christ Jesus that He humbled Himself to be a servant and seek to follow the Lord’s example.

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26)

Politics and Change in Nigeria

Yesterday, at Johns Hopkins University, USA, I honoured the invitation to speak on “Politics and Change in Nigeria” from Professor Peter Lewis, the famous author of “Growing Apart: comparing Indonesia and Nigeria“.

In discussing this very critical issue, which directly impacts the direction of a nation, I pointed out that the failure of a nation depends largely on its Political Leadership. Competent, capable and compassionate political leadership, with integrity, will help nations to achieve sustainable growth and development.

In my speech, I tried to assess 3 of our comparable nations – China, Vietnam and Indonesia, from 1990 till date.

In 1990, the year the measurement of the Human Development Index (HDI) was started, these 3 comparable nations, including Nigeria, were all classified under the medium category of the HDI measurement. 35 years later, 3 of these nations have moved up to the High category of HDI while Nigeria has fallen into the low category.

Within the same period of 35 years, from 1990 to 2025, the GDP Per Capita of these comparable nations have all improved. As of 1990, while Nigeria had a GDP per capita of $556, China had $317, Indonesia had $578, and Vietnam had only $99. Nigeria, obviously, had higher GDP per capita than China, while Vietnam had less than one-fifth of Nigeria’s per capita. Today, Nigeria’s per capita is about one-fifth of Indonesia’s ($5000) and Vietnam’s (4400) GDP per capita and below one-tenth of China’s (1300) GDP per capita.

In the area of poverty, Nigeria with about 50 million poor people, had the least number of people in poverty in 1990 than any of the three countries. While China had about 750 million people living in poverty, Indonesia and Vietnam had 85 million and 60 million poor people, respectively. China alone had about 15 times the number of poor people than Nigeria. Today, however, Nigeria has more poor people than these 3 countries combined.

The question then is, what exactly did these countries do to be able to achieve the desired growth and development? That is where political leadership comes in. These comparable nations, and indeed other progressive nations, unlike Nigeria, have competent leadership with character, capacity and compassion, committed to prioritizing investment in critical areas of developmental measures; Education, Health, and pulling people out of poverty.

A New Nigeria is POssible. –PO

Today, I joined Francis Cardinal Arinze, global dignitaries, and thousands of mourners at St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, to pay my final respects to His Holiness, Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. The solemn lying-in-state ceremony was a moment of deep reflection, as the world bids farewell to a man who embodied humility, simplicity, and selfless service.

Pope Francis was more than a Pontiff; he was a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference. His life was a testament to leadership as a sacred duty, one rooted in compassion, truth, and service to the poor and marginalised. He lived for others, spoke for the voiceless, and reminded us all that leadership must be about lifting others, not self-exaltation.

I came to truly appreciate what he stood for after my appointment as a member of Scholars Occultantes – an international circle of thinkers he founded during his time as Archbishop. The organisation, dedicated to truth, ethical leadership, and social transformation, gave me a deeper insight into the intellectual and moral force behind his teachings.

I was blessed to meet Pope Francis on three occasions. Each encounter left a lasting impression. He radiated peace and inspired faith, and his presence was a quiet yet powerful reminder of the divine responsibility that leadership entails. His humility was infectious, his vision deeply human.

As we mourn this great soul, I urge political, religious, and community leaders, especially across Africa, to reflect on his life and commit to the values he upheld: justice, peace, and human dignity. Let this moment not just be one of mourning, but a call to lead with conscience, walk with the people, and govern with love.

May Pope Francis’ soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy live on in all who seek to serve humanity selflessly. -PO

A South African cleric, Bishop Kelly Mashudu Tsedu-Muntswu, has listed signs that indicate that a pastor may be in a cult.

Bishop Kelly Mashudu Tsedu-Muntswu disclosed this in a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

According to him, the signs include distorting core Christian teachings, demanding absolute loyalty and dishonoring the family unit.

Isolating Members: Cults often encourage members to cut ties with family and friends who don’t share their beliefs, creating a sense of dependence on the group,” he wrote.

Demanding Absolute Loyalty: Cult leaders often demand unwavering loyalty and obedience, often portraying themselves as infallible or divinely chosen.

Dishonoring the Family Unit: Some cults undermine the importance of family, viewing it as a distraction or obstacle to their goals.

Suppressing Critical Thinking: Cults often discourage questions, dissent, or independent thought, instead promoting unquestioning acceptance of their doctrines.

Distorting Core Christian Teachings: Cults may add or invent new doctrines that contradict or distort fundamental Christian beliefs, focusing on secondary issues while downplaying salvation.

Unrealistic Expectations and Demands: Cult leaders may set impossible standards or demand excessive time, energy, or resources from their followers.

Manipulative Language and Tactics: Cult leaders often use emotionally charged language, guilt-tripping, or fear-mongering to control their followers.

Secret or Special Knowledge: Cults often present themselves as possessing exclusive knowledge or insights that are not available to outsiders, fostering a sense of exclusivity.

Unhealthy Level of Control: Cults often exert excessive control over their members’ lives, dictating their choices, relationships, and even their thoughts.

BESIDE what is written above, the inner you will testify, you may not put a finger to it, but something in you will testify.

This post does not suggest that you go around accusing people Because they do things differently from you, like I said, discernment is KEY!

Dignity (Summary)

Preacher: Pastor Tunde Netufo

This morning by the grace of God, the title of my message today is “Dignity”. When you talk about dignity, it’s a state or quality of being worthy of respect or honor, Judges 9: 8 – 15.

From our text, we find what I call a typical case of an allegory. An allegory is a story that illustrates a case; an allegory is a story or an account that also gives an account of another account. Something that is symbolic and typical in nature.

We found the story of trees that desired a king, moving from one tree to the other asking them to come and become king and how they were turning it down; once they turn down, they go to the other until it gets to the last one who accepted to be king. The olive, the vine and the fig tree declined the offer of kingship because they believe in themselves and much more in what they bring to the table and that leads us to the first question, how much do you believe in yourself? How much do you believe in what you are doing?

The olive tree stood by its office of honoring God and men; among the various oils, olive is the most important and expensive.

The fig is the most valuable tree in Philistines; it is a tree with many branches and people find shade under it.

The vine tree is the most important of them all; today, it remains in the process of producing wine which (of course) has traveled all over the world because it refused to remain in the forest.

However, the bramble tree accepted the offer and became the tree of the forest; it failed to appreciate its value and today, of all the trees, it’s the cheapest and you’ll find it in the bush.

So how do we dignify our effort this year? How do we maximize our value so that we can get the best result as we journey into year 2025?

  • Learn to attach great value to whatever position you find yourself, this is because value will propel us to the next level, Romans 11: 13.
  • You must value your Christian life if you want to go to heaven, 1st Peter 2: 9.
  • Dignify yourself.
  • You must be a good time manager.
  • Cultivate the habit of reading.
  • You must be a man of integrity, Psalms 101: 2, Psalms 15: 1 – 5.
  • Prudency is key to right and creative leadership, Proverbs 14: 15 – 16.
