Divine Accomplishment. Digging Deep. Prioritizing What Matters.

TEXT: MATTHEW 6:33, LUKE 12:31

INTRODUCTION: Having recently completed our study on knowing God, it is imperative for us to reflect our knowledge of Him in our daily living as Christians. One of the ways to do this effectively is to deal with distraction that come as part of our journey of life. Last week, we had an extensive study on Distraction.

Distraction is anything that prevent us from concentrating on that which matters. Distraction can hinder your focus on a needed task which can inadvertently cost you your future. Distraction is the greatest trap of the 21st century.

Examples of internal distraction which in most cases originate from self:

1. Physical State – Fatigue, hunger or thirst

2. Emotional State – Stress, anxiety or worries. 2 Corinth 4:17-18

3. Mental process – Thinking about future task (To do list). Matt 6:34, Psalm 94:19

Examples of external distraction:

1. Technology

2. People – Chatty with co-workers, family or friends.

3. Sensory input – Noise from the streets or surroundings, movements and even music.

Examples of people distracted in the Bible:

1. David was distracted

2. Solomon was pre occupied by his luxury and indulgence

3. Peter

4. Martha. Luke 10:38-42.

Jesus said only one THING WAS NEEDED and Mary has chosen it.

You need to determine what distract you and ensure you work on it. In, Deutermony 29:29 says “the secret things belong unto the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong unto us and our children forever that we may do all words of this law.

Outline 1: Seeking first the Kingdom of God. Matt 6:33

This involves making God’s rule and righteousness the top priority in our lives.

How?

• Live righteously: living according to His moral standards.

• Prioritizing God’s interest.

• Prioritize your relationship with God.

• Join in the mission to save souls.

• Make disciples of men.

• And trusting He will provide for your needs as a result. The benefits of seeking the Kingdom of God include joy, peace, freedom from fear,(2Timothy 1:7) spiritual growth, deeper understanding and above all, the assurance of eternal life.

What ways can we practice this?

• Repentance.

• 1 Thes 5:17 – Pray without ceasing / Fasting.

• Study the word.

• Worship/ Praise.

• Thanksgiving.

• Memorize bible verses.

• Complete obedience to the word of God. In accordance Deutermony 28: 1- 14

Outline 2: Focusing on Eternal Things

This involves your focus from material possession and earthly pursuits to cultivating a heavenly mindset, practicing eternal values like love, forgiveness and engaging in spiritual disciplines such as prayer and scripture studying to align your life with divine purposes and secure a place in eternity. Col 3: 1-2

• Prioritize eternal values.

• Living with purpose, hope and love.

• Consider the eternal impact of your actions.

• Self control.

• Engage in spiritual disciplines.

• Study the word.

• Diligent prayer.

• Surround yourself with like minded believers (Iron sharpens iron. Dmos 3:3, Prov 27:17).

• Live with eternal perspective.

• Share the gospel.

Outline 3: Set our minds on things above. Col 3:1-4, Phil 4:8

This is an instruction to us as believers. We are encouraged to focus habitually on the things above (the heavenly things) not on things that are on the earth – which only have temporal value. Isiah 26:3(NIV)

Don’t rely on self. The arm of flesh will fail (Rm 8:6) but rather trust in Him that is in you – and by this you will overcome.

How:

• Through meditation.

• Attending Bible believing church.

• Listen to uplifting gospel music and messages

• Work with all your heart. Be zealous for God.

• Do the work of God while it is day.

• Be deliberate with your relationship with God.

• Be a God pleaser not a man pleaser.

Conclusion

As we encounter the suffering of this life, we have the option of where to place our focus. Do not set your mind on earthly things. Heb 12:1-2

Let us learn from Mary who set as a learner at the feet of our Lord. This taught us to choose the good part.

Thank You Jesus,
