Seeking God In The Midst Of Ungodly People. Peculiar Generation By Pastor E A Adeboye

1-John_3-16-2: Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

1-John_3-16-2: Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Memorise:

Beloved, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

1 John 3:2

Read: 1 Peter 2:9-10

9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

10  Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

When John the beloved pondered on the fact that believers in Christ are children of God, he could not stop wondering how privileged they were to be so-called (1 John 3:2). Apostle Peter expounded the implication of the adoption we received through Jesus Christ:

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”

 1 Peter 2:9

There are many things that characterise a peculiar generation. A peculiar generation is the generation of those who seek God (Psalm 24:6). A peculiar generation is the generation of those who have obtained mercy and through it have become solution providers and barrier breakers. They are an unstoppable group of God’s children. We have a good number of them in the Bible. For example, Joseph belonged to the peculiar generation who would not compromise godliness and perfect loyalty to God (Genesis 39:7-9). A peculiar generation is that generation of solution providers like Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (Daniel 2:17-19). To belong to this generation, you must be ready to seek God in the midst of ungodly people (2 Corinthians 6:17-18).

In the 21st century, there are those who have decided to treat the Bible as outdated literature. Such do not see witchcraft, sorcery and sexual perversion such as homosexuality as evil. They explain apostolic teachings as inconsequential. Such are the people the peculiar generation must not associate themselves with. Although the peculiar generation might be marginalised, they are undeterred. One good thing about them is that they never suffer defeat, not even when demonic people try to attack them, because the Bible in Numbers 23:23a says:

“Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel:”

I pray that you will choose to belong to this peculiar generation of people who seek God at such a time like this: when it is no longer popular to live by the principles of the old Holy Scriptures. May God bless you as you decide to belong today in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point:

Father, help me to remain steadfast in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation.

May God Bless Nigeria, America And Israel And Take Care Of Us; May God Make His Face Shine Upon Us, And Be Gracious To Us; May The Lord Lift Up His Countenance Upon Us, And Give Us Peace, In Jesus Christ Name, We Pray! Amen!

May The Grace The Lord Jesus Christ, And The Love Of God, And The Fellowship Of The Holy Spirit Be With You All. Amen!

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

Acts 19:15

8  But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

9  Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,

10  And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

11  And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

12  Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

Enjoying and exercising spiritual authority is a pleasant experience. Are you enjoying spiritual authority? Better still, are you really exercising your God-given spiritual authority? If not, why? In today’s Bible reading, Paul exercised spiritual authority over an agent of the devil. Elymas the sorcerer could have frustrated the preaching of the gospel to a potential disciple of Jesus Christ, but for the fact that Paul the apostle knew the authority that he had. However, it is one thing to know that you have authority, and it is another thing to exercise it. You cannot exercise the spiritual authority you do not possess, because you cannot give what you don’t have. If you try it, you will end up with spiritual wounds like the seven sons of Sceva in Acts 19:14-16.

Matthew_28-18-1: And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth

Matthew_28-18-1: And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth

You may be wondering, “How can I enjoy spiritual authority and also exercise it?” First and foremost, you must establish a relationship with the One with overall spiritual power (Matthew 28:18). His name is Jesus. It is His authority you are exercising. Take a look at His model:

“And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils;”

Mark 3:14-15

Secondly, you must obey rules governing the exercise of His authority. He revealed one of such rules to His disciples in Mark 9:29, after they had failed while exercising His spiritual authority:

“And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

Thirdly, identify and believe in genuine ministers of God, in whom God has deposited His authority (2 Chronicles 20:20). Learn to follow their instructions.

Many people don’t know the value of this utterance: “God bless you”. A simple “God bless you” prayer from a man with spiritual authority will give you tremendous blessings without sweating. One night, I was praying at the Redemption Camp during one of our special programmes. A young man was following me because he wanted me to pray for him. I struggled to pause my personal prayer to pronounce “God bless you” on him. To my amazement, he still wanted me to pray for him! I wondered what else he wanted when I had pleaded with God to bless him.

Action Point:

Establish a relationship with Jesus Christ today. Study His word and exercise your faith in it, and you will begin to enjoy spiritual authority.

Amen!

12  Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

13  Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him?

21  Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?

22  It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Prayer involves much more than asking God for our heart desires. It also involves praise and worship, both of which are very much related. While praise acknowledges God for what He has done, worship acknowledges God for who He is. We need to understand that God expects all creatures to worship Him (Revelations 5:13). No matter what or who they are, as far as they exist, God expects them to worship Him.

Pretty much everybody in existence has received something from God (Acts 17:28). However, only those who acknowledge what they have received as coming from God can be deemed worshippers. Among this group of people, there are those who feel contented with what they have received from God. If you are in this category, praise and worship God. On the other hand, there are those who feel they have not received enough from God. These are people who feel God has done much but not enough for them. Such people believe they need more blessings from the Lord, and some even feel that God has not done enough to warrant their praises. It’s among this category of people you will find those who compare their wealth and other tangible achievements with that of those they think are more privileged than themselves. More often than not, people who engage in such comparisons conclude that God has not been fair to them. No matter how little you think the goodness of the Lord is in your life, it is imperative that you praise and worship Him.

Many people feel as though God has done nothing for them. In their opinion, God is not good at all. This kind of feeling is wrong and dangerous. If the devil is ministering to you that God is not good at all, resist the devil and worship God for who He is. It is easy to fall into this state when you are afflicted. Examples of those afflicted are the bereaved, the sorrowful, the disappointed and the discouraged. We should worship God even when afflicted. A classical example of someone who did this is Job. Job was a man who worshipped God in prosperity (Job 1:5) and he also worshipped God in the midst of satanic afflictions. Job 1:20-21 says,

“Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Note that Job still worshipped God at the end of his trials (Job 42:1-5). Worship characterises vessels unto honour. Are you a vessel unto honour? If your answer is yes, go ahead and worship God, whatever your situation might be.

Prayer Point:

Father, grant me the grace to worship you, no matter what I am going through.

Amen!
