I spent about 4-5 hours in Ikoyi Prison today interviewing about 20 inmates and these are what I learnt:

1. Many young boys between ages 17-30 are languishing in prison and nobody from their families knows their whereabouts.

2. Many young boys are in prison for stealing and other simple offenses they don’t even know when next their cases are coming up because nobody is following up on their cases and dates.

3. Many young boys are in prison because their mothers and/or fathers are either not alive or divorced or separated or never married.

4. Many young boys are in prison because they do not have anybody or means to perfect their bails.

5. Many young boys are in prison because they kept bad companies due to lack of education, proper parental guidance and lack of shelter.

6. Many young boys are in prison because their magistrates/judges have either retired, been transferred or elevated and nobody outside is them to follow up on next assignment.

7. Many young boys are in prison because they did not know that the charges against them have been struck out but nobody is helping them to follow up on obtaining release warrant from court for their release from the prison.

8. Many young boys are in prison after being released, they found their ways back to the prison again for committing another crime.

9. Many young boys are in prison because some powerful men have taken advantage of their lack of education to oppress them and when they get charged to court nobody shows up for them out of fear of being oppressed too.

10. The maximum capacity for the prison is about 1000 but there are currently over 3000 inmates in the prison and at least 20 new inmates join them daily.
