TO BEFORE WARN IS TO BEFORE HARM

TEXT: 1 Kings 11: 1-8

Verse 1

But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites

Verse 2

from the nations of whom the Lord had said to the children of Israel,  You shall not

intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods. “Solomon clung to these in love.

Verse 3

And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.

Verse 4

For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David.

Verse 5

For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

Verse 6

Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord, as did his father David.

Verse 7

Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon.

Verse 8

And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

STUDY:

God’s counsel is a shield- those who reject it will face the consequences. King Solomon, one of the most fortunate men in history messed up his opportunity because He ignored God’s counsel. Blessed with wisdom, great wealth, the throne, peace on all sides and unquestioned loyalty from his subjects; yet, despite God’s clear warning, Solomon had an eye for strange women. He married them, and in no time, his heart and loyalty turned from God. Just like God accurately predicted, “.

Surely they will turn away your hearts after their

gods” he built alters to idols, swayed by his wives. Solomon, confident in His wisdom, ignored the warning and faced the consequences Years passed and Israel weakened. His kingdom, once strong would soon divide. How are the mighty fallen (2 Sam. 1: 19)! The warning had been clear but Solomon chose to harm himself by ignoring it.

Beloved, while our passage today is about Solomon, what about you? Are you also harming yourself by ignoring God’s instructions as laid out in the scriptures?

God’s instructions are for your own benefits. His warnings are not to cage us unnecessarily or make our lives miserable, rather, they are to protect us from dangers and help us to live fulfilling and happy life; God’s warnings and rebukes are expressions of His love to you (Prov. 3: 11-12).

Food for Thought: Ignore God’s instructions, to your own peril…

Prayer:

Dear Lord, please help me to retrace my steps in areas of my rebellion against your counsel before it is too late in Jesus’ name. Amen.
