Counting the Costs Of Being A Disciple

If one of you is planning to build a tower, you sit down first and work out what it will cost, to see if you have enough money to finish the job, if you don’t you will not be able to finish the tower after laying the foundation; and all who see what happened will laugh at you. “This man began to build but can’t finish the job!” They will say…….in the same way, concluded Jesus, “none of you can be my disciple unless you give up everything you have”.

Many people believe in the Bible, but it is important to act on the Bible. In order to build our lives in righteousness, we must walk in strict obedience to the Word of God. By doing so, we will gain the covering of the protection of the Lord. God is continuously trying to bring protection, peace and joy into our lives, but when we walk outside of the laws of His kingdom, He is restricted by our own actions. God made us free moral agents with a will to choose of our own accord. The Gospel of Mark tells the story of a woman who suffered from a bleeding disorder for many years. She was among a crowd following Jesus and believed, “If I can reach him—just touch his clothes—I’ll be healed.”

A risky decision, don’t you think? To touch Jesus she’ll have to touch the people. If one of them recognizes her—hello rebuke, good-bye cure! But what choice does she have?

God Still Heals

Acts 19:11-12

“Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.”

In this verse, we see that it is God who works the miracles out among people, not Paul. This is an interesting section of scripture that some have twisted for their own monetary gain in the selling of such items as prayer cloths and other “miracle producing items”. The miracles were not from the handkerchiefs nor from Paul, but from God. These were merely the instruments God used. We should desire to be God’s instrument. Followers of Jesus Christ have a tremendous advantage that allows us to navigate the peaks and valleys of this world. God in His infinite wisdom created a manual for living that encompasses life from its beginning to its end.

It tells us all the attributes of the God we serve, chronicles His walk on earth and prescribes our path to eternal salvation. His manual covers all aspects of life. It leaves us without any want for knowledge.

The church is not a gathering of strangers, like fans at a ball game who just happen to be sitting next to each other. The church is a community of individuals spiritually linked together with the purpose of reflecting and legislating the values of the kingdom of God.

The church is critical in the process of growing mature disciples who imitate Jesus Christ because Jesus is relational. Jesus Himself stated the key identifier that would tell us who were His disciples and who were not, and that is our love for one another.

God’s people are so vitally connected that we’re like members of the same physical body. The parts of your body are in a relationship with the other parts. Just smash your thumb or stub your toe, and you’ll have a good biblical reminder of the interrelationship of your bodily members. Once…

A teenage boy once borrowed a fast car, and in a drunken stupor, sped through his home town at 180km/h. Since everything was horse-driven in his home town, there were no laws against speeding. So the town council passed a law saying that 80km/h was the maximum speed, and that any transgressors would be fined N 10,000.00 for every km/h over the speed limit. On his way back through the town, the speedstar decided to pull the same prank. He was apprehended, tried and found guilty by his father, who was the town’s only judge.
