St. Simeon and St. Jude’s Day

SALVATION IS FOR ALL

TEXT: Mark 15:17-27

[17] And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,

[18] and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

[19] Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.

[20] And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. The King on a Cross

[21] Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.

[22] And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.

[23] Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.

[24] And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.

[25] Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

[26] And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

[27] With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.

STUDY:

Today in the Church calendar is designated as St. Simon and Jude’s day.

Simeon was a Cyrenian according to our text. A Cyrenian is a citizen of Cyrene, a city in ancient Libya, North Africa. Simon plays a significant role:

1. was forced to carry Jesus’ cross: Simon of Cyrene was compelled by Roman soldiers to carry Jesus’ cross as He was led to His crucifixion (Matthew 27:32, Mark 15:21, Luke 23:26).

2. Cross-cultural Bridger: Simeon bridged the gap between the Jews (whom St Jude represented) and the non-Jews (The Gentiles).

This showed that salvation of mankind was not for the Jews only.

God in His infinite wisdom, plan and purpose directed the footsteps of Simeon to appear in that scene at that very moment to carry Jesus’ cross with Him.

Our God is omniscient, and works in mysterious ways to perform His wonders. He works through our plans to work out His eternal purpose.

Again, far from the insinuation of some ignorant people that Christianity is the

“White-man’s religion“, we can now see that an African played a crucial role in the salvation plan of God. May God, find you worthy to be used to work out His purposes in Jesus’ name.

Food for thoughts: Jesus is for all nations!

Prayer: Lord since You can use anything and anybody, I am available You can use me!

Thank You Jesus,

Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from You. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward You. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that Your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your Will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
