Ted, one of the elders in our church, used to be a police officer. One day after responding to a report of violence, he said the situation turned life-threatening. A man had stabbed someone and then menacingly turned the blade towards Ted. A fellow officer had taken position and fired his weapon at the assailant as he attacked Ted. Two bombs exploded during Christmaschurch service at a Catholic church in Madalla, Suleja, Niger state. Several church goers had died and many were severely injured.

Christmas day worshippers at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla near Abuja in Niger State were caught up in a blast that has killed more than 39 people.

Citizen reporters for Saharareporters.com have counted 39 bodies so far and 10 vehicles destroyed entirely in the attacks, one of the vehicles was carrying a family leaving the church after church service, the entire family died in the car.

As you enter a brand New Year, I want to encourage you through these passages to exercise the resurrection power within you. God‘s word is the key to victory as you face the many demands and expectations on you in 2012. Let’s make this a year in which we are intentional to develop and keep the discipline of seeking God first. He promises that when we seek Him first, He will supply “all these things” that He knows we need in our lives. Join with me in committing to seek Him first not only for yourself, but also for the people underneath your care.

Investing in People

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:27-28).

We exist for God; He does not exist for us. God loves doing things for His people, the reason we get up in the morning is to fulfil His purpose for our lives, not merely to ask Him to bless our purpose for our lives. God does not want to be our vending machine, where we put in a coin and He dispenses what we demand. Until we understand that we exist for Him, we will never know…

Has there ever been a time when you felt so bound by your circumstances that you thought you would never be released? Without a doubt, Peter’s situation, from a human standpoint, seemed impossible. However, from God’s perspective nothing was further from the truth. It was an opportunity for Him to display His awesome power through Peter’s life.

While the church was praying for his release, Peter was resting. In fact, he was asleep! Most of us would have been awake, anxiously watching the door and wondering what was going to happen next. But not Peter. He was in the centre of God’s loving will. Life is not void of trouble and heartache. Sometimes His plan for us includes difficulty.

Worship God with your whole heart

As consumers, we have little interest in leftovers. We don’t like to spend our money on flawed products. When we pay for an item or a service, we feel that it should be the best that company has to offer. This is true of God, but to an even greater extent.

Adam and Eve taught their sons Cain and Abel how to worship God in an acceptable manner. Yet when it came time to do this, the quality of Cain’s offering was not pleasing, and it was not given with the same passion as Abel’s. God does not have favourites. He did not choose one over the other because He liked one brother better than the next.

Abel simply understood the principle of worship and offered God the very best that he had. Cain, on the other hand, offered what he could gather quickly…

Worship is a way of life

One of the most exciting things you can do in your Christian walk with the Lord is to keep a journal of all that He is teaching you. Exodus 24:4 says, “Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord.” In other words, he did not want to miss or forget anything. He took notes! If he were attending church with you, you could expect him to pull out a notebook and start jotting things down. Why? God directed Moses to do this because he was the one who would communicate what God said to the nation of Israel.

Today, godly men and women teach God’s truth, and we would be wise to pick up the habit of taking notes, as God taught Moses to do. Actually, the human mind has to hear or record a fact at least three times before…
