Faith Is A Choice. We Choose To Believe Or Not Believe.

Faith Is A Choice. We Choose To Believe Or Not Believe.

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.

After Jesus claimed to be sent by God, some were seeking to seize Him, having come to the conclusion that He was not a good man. But others did believe in Him, “and they were saying, ‘When the Christ shall come, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?'” (John 7:31). All the evidence was there. Some chose to believe; others chose not to. People do the same today. Faith is a choice. We choose to believe or not believe.

Faith is the operating principle of life. It is the means by which we relate to God and live our lives in freedom. Notice the variety of ways stated in Scripture by which faith affects our lives.

First, we are saved by faith (Ephesians 2:8, 9).

Second, we “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Third, being found faithful is a prerequisite for ministry: “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service” (1 Timothy 1:12). Paul then adds, “And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2). This is more than being reliable, since a person could be counted on to follow through on an assignment and not be a believer. The added ingredient in faithful people is that they know the truth and can be counted on to be reliable.

Fourth, the quality of any relationship is determined by faith or trust: “Many a man proclaims his own loyalty, but who can find a trustworthy man?” (Proverbs 20:6). The words faith, trust and believe are all the same word ( pistis ) in the original language. The man who has faith believes in something. The one who believes also trusts or he doesn’t truly believe. There is no concept that looms larger in life than faith because what we believe determines how we live.

Prayer

Lord, I affirm that I cannot please You without faith. I choose today to believe in You and trust in Your name. Amen!

Beneath The Wings Of Jehovah

Beneath The Wings Of Jehovah

Oh, that I knew where I might find him. – Job 23:3

In Job’s extremely trying circumstances, he cried for the Lord. The longing desire of an afflicted child of God is to see his Father’s face once more. His first prayer is not “Oh, that I might be healed of the disease that now spreads through my body!” nor even “Oh, that I might see my children restored from the jaws of the grave, and my property returned to me from the hand of the thief!” The first and foremost cry is, “Oh, that I knew where I might find Him, who is my God, that I might come even to His seat!” God’s children run home when the storm comes. It is the heaven-born instinct of a gracious soul to seek shelter from all ills beneath the wings of Jehovah. “He who has made God his refuge” might serve as the title of a true believer.

A hypocrite, when afflicted by God, resents the infliction and, like a slave, would run from the Master who has scourged him; but not so the true heir of heaven, who kisses the hand that struck him and seeks shelter from the rod in the heart of the God who frowned upon him. Job’s desire to commune with God was intensified by the failure of all other sources of consolation.

The patriarch turned away from his sorry friends and looked up to the heavenly throne, just as a traveler turns from his empty water jug and makes a beeline for the well. He bids farewell to earthborn hopes and cries, “Oh, that I knew where I might find my God!” Nothing teaches us about the preciousness of the Creator as much as when we learn the emptiness of everything else. Turning away with bitter scorn from earth’s hives, where we find no honey but many sharp stings, we rejoice in Him whose faithful word is sweeter than honey or the honeycomb. In every trouble we should first seek to realize God’s presence with us. Only let us enjoy His smile, and then we can bear our daily cross with a willing heart for His dear sake.

Before The Judgment Seat

Before The Judgment Seat

Romans_11-33: h, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

Romans_11-33: h, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

Say to them, “As I live!” declares the Lord God, “I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways!”

Ezekiel 33:11, NASB

Whatever you do, don’t ever allow hard preaching against sin to cause calluses around your heart. Sin is the very thing that will damn countless sinners to a Christless eternity. Sin is the reason Jesus shed His Blood. Every minister of the Gospel has been chosen of God to preach His whole counsel; he is compelled to preach heaven sweet and hell hot. Mercy must be proclaimed as available, and judgment certain. It is so true that our loving Savior will one day be a severe Judge. Concerning hard preaching, Robert South said:
Ministers should threaten death and destruction even to the very worst of men. They should preach in such a manner that it may appear to all their sober hearers that they do not desire, but fear that these dreadful things should come to pass. Let them declare God’s wrath against the hardened and impenitent as I have seen a judge condemn a criminal with tears in his eyes. The true preacher of the Word should grieve with an inward bleeding compassion for the misery of those hardened sinners upon whom God is about to pronounce His judgment.

I live in a constant awareness of how insignificant our span of life appears in the sight of God. In just a moment we will all stand before the Judgment Seat. This is what motivates me to preach the truth regardless of how others may feel. Any good doctor will tell you what’s wrong in order to bring about a healing. Any good preacher will talk about sin so that the hearers can be set free.

Why Does The Church Exist? You Need The Church And The Church Needs You

Why Does The Church Exist? You Need The Church And The Church Needs You

Matthew_18-20: For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them

Matthew_18-20: For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them

Acts 2

Acts 2 is a description of the church of the first century. This church changed their world. It was said of them, not as a compliment I might add, that they turned their world upside down. We need to go to this church for our example to see how to do church right. This church was healthy. In fact, you could sum it up in this acronym: WELL. They were well.

Practical Principles

1. They were a worshipping church.

Verse 47 says, “Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (NKJV). Something wonderful happens when God’s people come together for corporate worship. It’s just amazing.
The world doesn’t have anything like it. Worship is a wonderful way to get things in perspective.

2. They were an evangelistic church.

There was a constant flow of new believers coming into the church. New believers are the lifeblood of the church. If we are not evangelizing, we will soon be fossilizing. That is why we should always be bringing our friends, neighbors, loved ones, and coworkers to church and pray that they will come to Christ.

3. They were a learning church.

The early church was into God’s Word. Verse 42 reads, “They continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine” (NKJV)—meaning they did it with a real passion.
There was a passion and an excitement. 1 Peter 2:2 says, “Like newborn babies, you should crave pure spiritual milk (NLT).” You crave it. You hear the Word of God. It is attention with intention.

4. They were a loving church.

The Greek word koinonia in Acts 2:42 could be translated as fellowship, or communion. It talks about something special that happens when God’s people get together—when we fellowship and we are talking about the things of the Lord and sharing things that God has done in our lives and verses that are meaningful and even joking and having fun.

All of it can be a wonderful thing that God will bless.

Relevant Reminders

• The closer you are to God the closer you will want to be with His people. The further you are from God the further you will want to distance yourself from His people.
• Every one of us should be a functioning part of the church. If you want to be a growing and successful Christian, read the Bible and pray. Be an active part of the church.

Applicable Actions

You need to be in a regular place where God’s people are gathering together for worship, teaching, and all of the wonderful things that the church does.

Why does the church exist? The church exists for three reasons

  1. The glorification of God (we are here to bring honor and glory to the Lord as a church and as individuals),

2. The edification of the saints (we are here to build up one another and encourage one another), and

3. The evangelization of the world. Here is a simpler way to remember it: Upward. Inward. Outward. We want to be a part of that. You need the church and the church needs you. The church is an oasis of hope in a desert of hopelessness.

Thank You Jesus.

Hebrews_10-25:Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Why does God allow Christians to go through trials and testing? God is in control. He is going to work it out for His good

Why does God allow Christians to go through trials and testing? God is in control. He is going to work it out for His good

James 1
Why does God allow Christians to go through trials and testing? Things are going along wonderfully. Suddenly, without warning (or so it would seem), one problem after another comes tumbling into our lives. Things are looking bleak. Then the clouds part and the sun shines again.

Everything is better.

Why do we go through those hard times? Why do we go through those emotional lows? Why do we go through those days of difficulty? Why do these things happen to us?

Answer:

I have no idea. But the Bible has a lot to say about it.

Practical Principles

1. God allows trials in our lives so we will grow up spiritually.

God allows tests in our lives and rarely announces them ahead of time. He just lays them on us. Effectively the Lord is saying, “You say you know this material. Let’s test you and see how well you are doing.” Trials take us from the realm of theory to reality so we can start living out our faith in the real world. Trials make us strong.

2. God allows trials in our lives, but even when things are bleak all things work together for your good and God’s glory.

God is in control of all circumstances that surround the believer. There are no accidents. There is just providence. Romans 8:28 says, “All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (NKJV).

3. God’s ultimate purpose for us in trials, and in life, is to conform us into the image of Jesus Christ.

Yes we love Romans 8:28 but we forget that after that is Romans 8:29. Those two verses together give the big picture. Verse 29 reads, “For whom He foreknew, He also did predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son” (NASB). We look a lot of times at the here and now but God is looking at the bigger picture.

3. Suffering can bring glory to God.

Satan challenged God, who was bragging on Job, and said,
“You bless him and that is why He follows you.” But what did Job do when the bottom dropped out? He worshipped God, showing Satan was wrong. God’s confidence in Job was not misplaced.

4. Trials and suffering can be used by God to prepare us for a special task.

God is getting you ready for something. That was the case with Joseph. God was preparing him to be a great world leader, as he said, “to save many people alive.” God uses these experiences in life to transform us.

Harvest.org | Greg Laurie

Relevant Reminders

Sometimes God is glorified by removing the problem and resolving the situation. Then there are times when God will be glorified not by the removal of the problem but by leaving it there and having you worship Him just the same.

When you have gone through something you say, “Why did God allow me to go through this?” The answer may be we don’t know, but you are going to bring a lot of hope to somebody else who is going through it. You comfort with the comfort you have been comforted with.

Perhaps the hardships of today are preparing you for greater opportunities tomorrow.

Applicable Actions

Whatever you are going to face, God will give you what you need when you need it, so don’t panic.

God is in control. He is going to work it out for His good.

Thank You Jesus!

So what does Scripture tell us about temptation and how to resist it?

So what does Scripture tell us about temptation and how to resist it?

Luke 4

James 1

There is no sin in being tempted, because everyone experiences it. Rather, it is when we give in that it becomes sin.

The good news is that temptation can be endured. Not only that, but the believer who resists temptation is happy and will receive a reward. So what does Scripture tell us about temptation and how to resist it?

PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES

1. Where does temptation come from? Generally, temptation comes from Satan, but it takes two to tango. Temptation does nothing unless we give it permission. James 1:14–15 describes the process of temptation: the temptation itself, our attention is stirred, we give it power, we act on it, and eventually the repercussions kick in.

2. When does temptation come? The simple answer is that temptation comes all the time, but there are times when it is sure to come. Jesus’ temptation came right after His baptism. Likewise, temptation will come after times of great blessing in our lives.

Temptation also comes when we believe we are strongest. It was after Simon Peter boasted of his devotion to the Lord that he was told he would deny the Lord.

3. How does temptation come? In many cases, temptation enters through the doorway of our minds (2 Corinthians 11:3). The mind is where we imagine and fantasize, opening the door for Satan’s enticements. Scripture tells us that we need to have our guard up against attack (2 Corinthians 10:5–6), and that we need to fill our mind with the Word of God and godly thoughts (Philippians 4:8–9).

4. Who does temptation come to? Just as children are especially vulnerable to dangers and threats, young believers are easy targets for the devil because they may not be grounded enough in their faith to withstand an attack or temptation. But Satan will also go after the Christian who is making a difference for God’s kingdom. He will attack the active believer in order to distract him or her from working for God.

5. Where is the best place to be when temptation comes? Answer: In the will of God (Psalm 1). When we are in the Word daily, seeking His will, and following Scripture, we are less likely to give in to temptation. When we let ourselves wander and stray, that’s when we find ourselves where we’re not supposed to be, doing something we’re not supposed to be doing.

Harvest.org | Greg Laurie

6. What is the primary weapon we should use to resist it? Paul’s description of our spiritual armor only lists one offensive weapon: the Word of God. And that is how we build up our defences against temptation and repel Satan’s attacks—by reading Scripture and memorizing it. If we can remember obscure movie quotes and song lyrics, we can memorize Scripture.

Relevant Reminders

When we memorize Scripture, it helps us respond when Satan comes in with his temptations. Here are some of Satan’s accusations and verses that you can use to respond.

“You have sinned and God won’t forgive you”: 1 John 1:9 says God is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us, if we will confess our sins.

“God has condemned us for our sins”: Romans 8:1 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

“You will never get up again. You are never going to recover from this. This is the end”:
Philippians 1:6 says God will complete the work He started in you.

“God has abandoned you”: Romans 8:28 says all things work together for good for those who love God.

“Your loved one is gone, and you’ll never see them again”: Jesus said that he who believes in Christ will live, even if he dies (John 11:25). 2 Corinthians 5:8 says that the believer who has died immediately goes into God’s presence.

Applicable Actions

Temptation can be effectively resisted. The formula is simple: memorize Scripture, stay close to God and His people, and stay away from ungodly influences. If you are a Christian and do those things, you can defeat temptation because you will have Christ on your side.
But if you aren’t a Christian, you can do all of those things and even resist some temptation, but you will be fighting alone and you will fall. Why not find forgiveness for your sins in a relationship with God? Then you can start to win the battle against temptation

Thank You Jesus!

James_1-12-1: Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him

Gideon, an unlikely choice for a hero. It is time to step out and be a true follower of Jesus Christ.

Judges 6

The Book of Joshua represents an emotional high for the nation of Israel, as God’s people conquered Canaan and took possession of the Promised Land. Conversely, the Book of Judges is a huge let-down, as the Israelites’ reliance on God falters and opposing nations begin to torment them.

Even then, God was gracious, sending 13 judges to galvanize Israel and fight back against its many foes. One of them was Gideon, an unlikely choice for a hero. But God used him to make a difference and turn Israel back toward God. Gideon is also a picture of how God can use us to change the world today.

Practical Principles

1. God uses people who are humble. We tend to imagine that God uses the talented, the superstars, and the beautiful people to do His work. But truly, He is looking for ordinary people, ones who see themselves for who they are. That way, God can do the extraordinary through them, just as He did with Gideon. We see who we are, but God sees what we can be.

2. God uses people who are faithful in the little things. Before Gideon could take on the Midianites, God asked him to do something smaller—destroy his father’s idol and altar to Baal, build an altar to God, and offer a burnt sacrifice. Some people want to cross the ocean to be a missionary, but God might be calling you to simply cross the street and share with a neighbor. He might be calling you to serve at church in the children’s ministry or parking lot ministry. Jesus said that if you are not faithful in the small things, He will not entrust you with the large things (see Luke 16:10).

Relevant Reminders

Why did God take Gideon’s army of 10,000 and trim it down to 300? One reason is that He wanted to make it clear that this was His victory and not something that Gideon accomplished.

Secondly, He did it to find the truly committed, leaving behind the scared and the half-hearted. God has not called us to an easy life as believers. Being a Christian is difficult, even in the best of circumstances.

But God can do more with 300 committed believers than He can with 10,000 wishy-washy people.

He is looking for those who are faithful, obedient servants, willing to change the world.

APPLICABLE ACTIONS

In the Book of Acts, Paul and Silas’ ministry was described in this way: “They turned the rest of the world upside down and they are disturbing our city.” May God help us to disturb our world, our homes, and our neighborhoods. Not in an obnoxious way. Not in an irritating or unnecessarily offensive way. But in a godly way where they can see how God has changed your life. It is time to step out and be a true follower of Jesus Christ.

Thank You Jesus!
