Bible Heroes Who Doubted God.
Proverbs_30-5: Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him
“Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, if ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.” Matthew 28: 17
I have a confession to make.
After being a Christian for over 16 years, going through battles over battles, there were times I have doubted God.
Especially those moments when I needed GOD the most but I can’t feel His presence.
I cried out loud and it feels like He turned deaf ear.
Sometimes I wonder “Lord, are you still there?”
“Am I still in Your son Jesus Christ?”
Yes.
I doubted God many times.
But what I realized is this, those moments were and are growth pains.
I believe we all go through that “doubting moment” one way or another.
Gideon doubted God.
Thomas doubted God.
Sarah and Abraham laughed at God’s promise.
But in the end they all transformed from “doubting” to “believing.”
That’s right.
Those experiences of doubt usually lead to a deeper faith.
Another way to develop deeper faith in God is through scripture memorization and meditation.
My wife and I truly believe in the life transforming power of memorizing scriptures.
Being troubled is a common human state. And doubting the path we are on, or at least the path we have found ourselves on, is so natural and normal. We really do not trust God as much as we are told we should. Then finally the truth bares itself: we are eventually led to a good place as we continually repel the desire to turn back because of our doubting.
Our thinking is a forwards-backwards land of operations in the cognitive realm.
Doubting becomes us, and generally at the least helpful at times. But doubting has a role in testing the tenacity of our willingness to go on; to continue on the path we feel we must choose to follow. Perhaps God inflects our doubting in such a way as to force us to reconsider our underpinning motives.
Doubting is reason enough to review what we are about. Are we serious?
In this way, we can see the valuable role that doubting plays. It’s as if God was saying, “Are you really serious about this, and, if so, how serious are you?”
There is almost a sense of compulsion that should lead us to recommit to the journey God has placed us on. On this very track that is our destiny, God gives us ample opportunity to choose for it or not. It’s our life and God wants us to own it. God gives us plenty of opportunity to choose for it, to plan past regret, and to right the wrongs we make of it.
Glory to God that we are given millions of opportunities to turn back.
The truth is the path leads somewhere; not just anywhere, but somewhere.
And faith it is that leads us to that place.
BURNING WITH PURPOSE AND INTENTION.
Like the launch of a space shuttle – a series of projects and operations so intricately planned – we are on the countdown of our lives. When we see life as a journey toward a destination – to reach somewhere – Heaven! We have purpose about us and the intention is focused. As the engines propelling us on our way rev up, they push us through the doubting, as if doubting were a sound barrier, as we continually monitor the status of our ship on every step of the journey.
Life is a journey and we gather purpose by the intention to travel.
There is no purpose in not traveling. But when we are committed to traveling, even on the bumpiest of rides, when doubting is stricken with threat, we have enough intention to blast through the doubting.
Recently, I read an inspiring story and I want to share it to you Friends:
A young pilot had just passed the point of no return when the weather changed for the worse. Visibility dropped to a matter of feet as fog descended to the earth.
Putting total trust in the cockpit instruments was a new experience to him, for the ink was still wet on the certificate verifying that he was qualified for instrument flying.
The landing worried him the most. His destination was a crowded metropolitan airport he wasn’t familiar with.
In a few minutes he would be in radio contact with the tower. Until then, he was alone with his thoughts.
His instructor had practically forced him to memorize the rulebook. He didn’t care for it at the time, but now he was thankful.
Finally he heard the voice of the air traffic controller. “I’m going to put you on a holding pattern,” the controller radioed. Great! thought the pilot.
However, he knew that his safe landing was in the hands of this person. He had to draw upon his previous instructions and training, and trust the voice of an air traffic controller he couldn’t see.
Aware that this was no time for pride, he informed the controller, “This is not a seasoned pro up here. I would appreciate any help you could give me.”
“You’ve got it!” he heard back.
For the next 45 minutes, the controller gently guided the pilot through the blinding fog.
As course and altitude corrections came periodically, the young pilot realized the controller was guiding him around obstacles and away from potential collisions.
With the words of the rulebook firmly placed in his mind, and with the gentle voice of the controller, he landed safely at last.
The Holy Spirit guides us through the maze of life much like that air traffic controller.
The controller assumed that the young pilot understood the instructions of the flight manual. His guidance was based on that.
Such is the case with the Holy Spirit: He can guide us if we have knowledge of God’s Word and His Will established in our minds.
So don’t ignore the power of scripture memorization.
This discipline alone can lead you to greater heights of your faith in God. And there’s no better time to begin memorizing Bible verses but today.
